    the past year has helped me realize the flexibility inherent in fields centered on improving society by increasing access to social services While I used to think that I would one day have a career and stay with it for life I am beginning to realize that wanting a career in research policy or social work might mean changing my career multiple times or having an evolving career My research experience here at Iowa opens the door to the graduate programs for me And it affirms the idea that doing research is fun for someone like me who is always curious about everything and tries to prove if things are valid My research has given me the skills interpersonal relationships and confidence to consider attending graduate school with the goal of getting a Masters or Ph D Before research my future goals included simply getting a job Now I have many more options I m not surprised that getting involved in academia has shown me that it is not the place for me I have gained so much from my Liberal Arts education but now it is time to take what I have learned into the field My goal is to one day practice internal medicine Research has helped to affirm this goal because it has built upon my pre existing passion for science and medicine I love research I love the fact that I am devoting my time to furthering science One day my research could help in an extremely small way to make a difference in the way certain diseases are understood or treated and I think that is amazing Helping my mentor with her research over the past year has helped me realize the flexibility inherent in fields centered on improving society by increasing access to social

    They can definitely open up doors for the future You need to be honest and open with your faculty mentor every step of the way and seek out a mentor who is as enthusiastic about helping you as you are about doing the research Taking part in research presentations and festivals alongside your research gives you a great opportunity to develop your presentation skills show your work to other scholars

    The p rogram allows current University of Iowa undergraduates in every discipline to work with UI faculty or P S staff mentors on a specific project during the academic year and or summer Approximately 150 students are appointed each year as ICRU Research Fellows and are awarded a scholarship of either 2 000 during the academic year or 2 500 during the summer Applications for the ICRU Fellows Program open

  • Credit Hour Registrations for Research Experiences | Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates
    department via the Honors Program or through URES These are generally variable credit courses 1 4 and can be graded on either a letter grade A F or Satisfactory Fail basis The appropriate number of credit hours is determined by the following calculation 1 credit hour for each 3 hours of work per week For example 3 credit hours of research 9 10 hours per week on the project over the course of a semester Course options for research can also be found through the new Undergraduate Research Experiences URES department which was created not only to recognize student s work but to also track faculty and staff involvement in undergraduate research Students register under individual faculty staff as independent studies who are then responsible for submitting grades for students who are registered with them and will be reminded via email near the end of each semester URES 3992 This is a 0 credit hour course designed to have research experiences show up on students academic records There are no fees or tuition associated with this course and is a good starting option for students who are volunteering or students who are getting paid This can be used during the academic year and summer terms URES 3993 This is a variable credit registration 1 4 hours that is graded on an S F basis URES 3994 This is a variable credit registration 1 4 hours that is graded on a letter grade A F basis Students and faculty staff mentors will determine how many credit hours are reasonable considering the time spent on the project each week Students can continue to receive credit for several semesters check with individual departments for maximum hours allowed Students should not receive multiple compensations for the same work only receiving either credit or pay

    Science Foundation s Research Experiences for Undergraduates REU program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation REU projects involve students in systematic and productive ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects designed especially for the purpose Two mechanisms for support of student research REU Supplements may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF funded research projects REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department or may offer interdisciplinary or multi department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme Proposals with an international dimension are welcome Undergraduate student participants in either REU Sites or REU Supplements must be U S citizens U S nationals or permanent residents of the United States Students do not apply to NSF to participate in REU activities Students apply directly to REU Sites or to NSF funded investigators who receive REU Supplements Identify appropriate REU Sites by consulting the directory of
