    sciences world languages and many other subjects Because the College of Arts Sciences builds the foundations of advanced study in every field it addresses the core educational needs of every student in the university The college is dedicated to the idea that every university educated person should have an informed familiarity with the diversity of fields of knowledge about the human and natural worlds and their operations in time and space the diversity of ways of organizing knowledge and the diversity of modes of expression Moreover the college seeks to provide students with the advanced literacy and mathematical and scientific skills that will best prepare them for today s dynamic job market More broadly the college s mission is to challenge students to think for themselves and to think critically On a practical level critical thinking means the habitual use of the analytical skills organizational ability creativity and imagination that students will need to become productive members of an increasingly better educated work force On a more abstract but equally important level it means perpetually re evaluating the assumptions prejudices and aspirations of one s society community family and self It is the special obligation of a college that takes as its province the full range of human endeavor to challenge students to become citizens who are willing and able to question authority in order to make it more responsible to tolerate and indeed to welcome different points of view and to be respectful of others while they think for themselves It is also the particular obligation of the college to contribute to the discovery of new knowledge in the basic disciplines of the academy Varied scholarly investigations ranging broadly within and between disciplines form the core of the college s identity Since the University of Kentucky is the Commonwealth

    and the city importance of the horse industry and how they can become involved in any of those areas This course will expose students to many aspects of city governance public private partnerships public services and cultural relations that will serve them well as engaged citizens Student projects may range from specialized services for homeless veterans with substance abuse problems to historic preservation projects FastTrack for Calculus and Science for Kentucky s Future The College of Arts Sciences is committed to providing students throughout the commonwealth with the resources necessary to succeed in college FastTrack for Calculus is a residential program that gives incoming calculus 1 students the chance to prepare and build skills and confidence by working with professors and faculty from across the University In an effort educate future generations on the value of the hard sciences professors in the STEM departments science technology engineering and math conduct workshops for local teachers and support science related events at Kentucky elementary middle and high schools Passport to the World The Passport to the World Program enables the college to embark on year long explorations of the culture and history of a particular region or country The program engages our community in crucial global conversations through public lectures cultural events coursework and travel opportunities After past programs with South Africa and China A S is shifting its focus to Eastern Europe for the 2012 2013 academic year with Reimagining Russia s Realms Other exciting international endeavors include Faculty exchanges Education abroad A new international team taught course initiative American Studies Center at Shanghai University The Institute for 21st Century Scholarship By establishing the Institute for 21st Century Scholarship A S is creating an avenue to bring together the best minds to solve the most pressing issues of our time Advances in data collection management and analysis as well as a myriad of new research approaches techniques and methods will allow our scholars to address and understand larger and more complex issues The Institute will create a bridge between basic research and applied research facilitating the collaborative work of our finest faculty and graduate students from across the college and university by offering seed money for grant and project development Appalachian Studies The University of Kentucky has been one of the leading places for Appalachian Studies since the program s creation in 1977 The program plays a vital role in fulfilling the University of Kentucky s founding mission to serve the Commonwealth Thanks in part of excellent resources like the Appalachian Center and the library s Appalachian Collection the program offers a fresh synthesis of cross disciplinary collaboration innovative course development and new levels of engagement with the region This intersection of interdisciplinary studies and community based advocacy in the Appalachian Studies Program facilitates an understanding of both Appalachian communities and larger society African American and Africana Studies This new program which unites the former African American and Africana Studies programs is reviewing and re visioning the traditional curriculum with an
