    are here Home James A Nelson Submitted by ncpenr2 on June 12 2011 9 13pm Retired Kentucky Department for Libraries and ArchivesState Librarian and Commissioner Chair National Advisory Board Nelson received his MSLS from UK in 1969 He later worked at UK as the director of continuing professional education He also worked for the University of Wisconsin where he had a joint appointment with the UW Library School and UW Extension Communication Programs planning and managing continuing education activities for librarians He taught the public library course for both library schools Jim received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the UK College of Library and Information Science in 1985 Nelson served as the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives State Librarian and Commissioner for twenty six years and as Acting State Librarian for an earlier administration He was also a speech writer for Governor Wendell Ford later a US Senator honored by the American Library Association for his longtime support of library issues particularly free and open access to government information Nelson was active with the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies serving as Treasurer and chairing its Legislative Committee In ALA he was President of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies and chaired the ALA Legislative Assembly He was a longtime board member of the Kentucky Library Association and received its Lifetime Achievement Award the highest award given by the association During his tenure as State Librarian he served on the Kentucky Information Resources Management Commission and focused on information policy issues He chaired the Commission for three years when Kentucky developed a state information technology strategic plan an information architecture for all state agencies and standards for IT hardware software and communications technology This was when Kentucky moved to a CIO enterprise technology management system He served

    ncpenr2 on June 12 2011 9 15pm Founder Guthrie Mayes Associates Public Relations Inc Guthrie is the founder of Guthrie Mayes Public Relations one of the largest independently owned public relations firms in the state of Kentucky Guthrie sold his interest in the firm in 2005 to three senior staff members He remains of counsel to the firm Guthrie began his career in 1964 in the public relations department of Philip Morris Inc in New York City He was appointed community relations manager for the company s Louisville facilities in 1967 and moved back to New York as their director of communications in 1969 He returned to Louisville two years later as president of the Kentucky Derby Festival 1971 1977 where he was the driving force that propelled the two week event into national prominence as one of the nation s largest civic celebrations Jack launched his own public relations firm in 1977 Guthrie was appointed to the UK Board of Trustees for a six year term as Alumni Trustee in 1996 and was named president of the UK Alumni Association in 1988 and currently is on its board of directors For eight years beginning in 1993 he was president of UK s School of Journalism Alumni Association and chairman of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame Committee He was the first public relations executive to hold the position of president of the Louisville Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists He was named Man of the Year by the Louisville Advertising Club in 1995 and has received numerous other professional and personal awards over the years He was named the College s Outstanding Alumnus in 2008 In 2000 Jack created the James C Bowling Lecture series in the name of his mentor Jim Bowling He raised over 200 000
