    News About Us About Us Diversity Plan Publications Academic Policies iSchools Our College Student Handbook You are here Home Blogs Will Buntin s blog Japanese Researchers Visit SLIS A team of Japanese researchers studying suicide and suicide prevention arrived at UK s School of Library and Information Science on August 1st to discuss a possible collaborative research project with UK faculty Kenji Kawana above left chief of the Suicide Prevention Support Center of the Japanese National Institute of Mental Health in Tokyo Daisuke Kawashima above center Associate Professor of Education at Hokkaido University and their translator Mahoko Iwagami above right of Tokyo joined Dr Ning Yu right of the School of Library and Information Science and Dr Julie Cerel an associate professor at UK s College of Social Work to discuss possible collaborations on several cross culture studies The project I am mainly involved in said Dr Yu aims to examine the cognitive frameworks which are unintentionally used when people talk about suicide Applying text mining technologies on social media data Dr Yu will look for the metaphoric phrases e g Death is coming I welcome death people use when talking about suicide According to Dr Yu both English and

    here Home Blogs editor s blog UK SLIS Student Curates Arnow Exhibit UK SLIS graduate student Amber Surface has been working with the Harriette Simpson Arnow papers for over a year Through a specialized LIS 675 professional field experience and under the guidance of Kate Black UK Libraries Appalachian Curator she is able to apply her knowledge of the collection to the curation of the exhibit the heart of the piece by Tom Eblen in the Lexington Herald Leader Ms Surface started processing the papers in the Appalachian Archives in September 2010 where she stayed until accepting a graduate assistantship with SLIS in August 2011 She started working on the exhibit at the same time as part of the LIS 675 experience The exhibit will open November 17 but that isn t the end Ms Surface will also curate a virtual exhibit to complement the exhibit The physical exhibit is of course more extensive than the virtual exhibit Ms Surface shared The virtual exhibit will have some duplication but mostly it will complement not copy the physical exhibit Plus I ve added a few pieces that couldn t make it into the cases so there s even more to see

    Information Communication Technology Certificate in Instructional Communication Directory Faculty Directory Employee Directory Emeritus Faculty ICR Faculty Faculty News About Us About Us Diversity Plan Publications Academic Policies iSchools Our College Student Handbook You are here Home Blogs editor s blog Max Anderson s Technology Courses Earlier this week Max Anderson from the Greater Midwest Region of the National Network of Libraries in Medicine NN LM instructed two four hour courses in technology Both courses were free of charge to the over fifty attendees and free to UK SLIS Moreover the courses can be counted as continuing education credits for members of the Medical Library Assocation On Monday Mr Anderson presented a course entitled Information Anywhere Mobile Technology Libraries and Health The course focused on mobile devices mainly the most popular smartphones and computer tablets and applications websites created specifically for those devices QR codes and the use of Augmented Reality Students had the opportunity to create a simple mobile website On Tuesday Mr Anderson assisted attendees in creating a screencast using Camtasia software in the course entitled Screencasting Creating Online Tutorials Aside from learning how to operate the software participants discussed best practices for creating screencasts such as volume intonation and speaking rate By the end of the class participants were able to publish a short web tutorial Over the two days participation included more than fifty people from central Kentucky UK SLIS faculty staff and students UK Libraries faculty and staff and medical librarians unaffiliated with the University of Kentucky A few photos from the event can be found on Picasa as linked below NN LM is coordinated by the National Library of Medicine NLM to provide health care professionals and the public equal access to biomedical and health care information resources NLM the world s largest biomedical library
