    45 local health departments provide a strong governmental public health infrastructure essential for effectively addressing ongoing challenges such as preventing or managing chronic illnesses controlling infectious diseases monitoring the safety of food and water and responding to public health emergencies Simultaneously the office builds upon UM SPH s longstanding commitment to community based partnerships research teaching and service activities carrying forward the school s Community Based Public Health work that commenced in 1992 The institutional changes and knowledge gained during this major initiative have been incorporated in an ever expanding set of partnerships programs and projects The following are some examples of these efforts Three major research centers organized as community based partnerships have been developed to address some of the most critical public health issues faced by communities today Courses at the School of Public Health incorporate work in the field as a component of the curriculum and engage community partners in teaching Work opportunities enable a growing number of students to incorporate learning in community settings with classroom learning Linkages have been established and are being strengthened between the School of Public Health s community based partnership activities and those of other University of Michigan units addressing issues

    health and quality of life in our communities by offering face to face and online instruction to students drawn from state and local health departments community based organizations health delivery systems and health plans as well as those studying public health Practice Plunge The Practice Plunge is an opportunity for incoming and second year SPH students to step outside the classroom and into public health practice Held during New Student Orientation students participating in the Practice Plunge visit a local public health department and participate in a public health project with a community based organization Practice Summit The Office of Public Health Practice has held an Academic Practice Summit to explore linkages between Governmental Public Health and Academia since 2006 Summit events include a welcome by the Dean of the School of Public Health and a keynote address by a leader in the field of public health Summit sessions highlight new SPH initiatives and focus on academic practice collaborations Invitees include SPH faculty and students Health Officers and Medical Directors from all 45 local health departments in Michigan designated leadership of the Michigan Department of Community Health and other public health practice partners Public Health Action Support Team PHAST PHAST
