    detailing the course number course length and project activity and have it approved by the project supervisor course director advisor and a Clinical Education designee before the activity is undertaken INMD 7000 and INMD 7001 are the course numbers designated for independent research Most specialties also have a specific research course for up to 6 weeks Applications for independent research courses can be found on the Forms Applications page A specific evaluation form is utilized for the INMD Research course No retroactive credit will be given Electives Away for Credit EAC Students may take electives away for credit EAC subject to limits cited under Program Requirements and below The credits will be registered as non hands on regardless of the content of the rotation An EAC can be taken only at medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education LCME or by arrangement through IMER at a foreign medical school with an appropriate preceptorship The balance of the elective program must fulfill elective requirements see Electives above 8 weeks hands on in Twin Cities or Duluth Most students who utilize EAC take 4 8 credits weeks with a maximum of 8weeks at a school where a residency program is being sought Electives for credit at military duty sites must be at major teaching centers Students must complete an application form see the Forms Applications page and have it approved by their faculty advisor and by a Clinical Education designee prior to taking an EAC No retroactive credit will be given Some institutions have direct applications for visiting student electives The AAMC s Visiting Student Application Service VSAS is a service used by many host institutions The complete list of institutions using VSAS can be found on their website In order to get access to VSAS please email the UMN Medical School s VSAS Coordinator vsas umn edu Additionally the VSAS site offers RotatingRoom com a free online service designed exclusively for medical students to find and offer short term housing during away rotations The website offers robust search and visualization comprehensive property details and additional information such as public transportation options to nearby hospitals A number of requirements need to be satisfied to receive credit for an away rotation Approval by the student s advisor in the context of the student s overall program approval is based on judgment if the activity is relevant to the student s educational and career goals Approval to take an EAC and registration at the University of Minnesota for INMD 7555 7556 special application form available on the Forms Applications page must be done in advance before beginning the EAC give yourself plenty of time to obtain approval from your advisor and a Clinical Education designee Students cannot fulfill any required course clerkship by taking the clerkship away LCME requirement all required courses must be taken in the TC metropolitan area or Duluth Students with incomplete grades and or who are not in satisfactory academic standing will not be approved for EAC
