    and public health was the first awardee of the Terry Lathrop Award This award is presented in memory of the late Terry Lathrop f ormer DCRP faculty member and contributor to the field of transportation and land development It is given to the student who completed the best master s paper in the area of transportation The title of the project is Light Rail and Single Family Home Prices The Impact of the Metrolink Blue Line on St Louis County Residential Property Values In describing her work her advisor Professor Daniel Rodriguez wrote Do light rail investments stimulate urban development This question is at the heart of Jill s paper Motivated by unexpected situations like the opening of a Mini Cooper dealership within a block of a rail stop in her hometown St Louis Jill set out to examine whether the Metrolink had impacted actual sales prices She collected 23 years of sales data from St Louis County and focused only on properties that sold more than once to be able to infer their appreciation over time Relative to control areas she was able to detect a faint upward trend after Metrolink opened but not after the preferred route was

    Research Proposal Competition Announcing the 2014 2015 China Urbanization Research Proposal Competition With support from the Dean s Office College of Arts Sciences and the Provost s Office the DCRP s Program on Chinese Cities is pleased to solicit applications for its China Urbanization Research Proposal Competition The Program on Chinese Cities Research Proposal Competition is designed to encourage faculty members at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to conduct research on Chinese cities This competitive program provides 20 000 for a course buy out plus benefits to enable a faculty member to develop a large research proposal focusing on an issue relevant to urbanization in China Alternatively the 20 000 could also be used to fund travel summer salary student research support purchasing data or other expenses related to completing a pilot study and developing a grant proposal If faculty members are interested in establishing a partnership with scholars in China in pursuing the grant proposal PCC will be able to assist Competition Guidelines Applications are due no later than Monday June 2 2014 at 5 00 PM For further information or an application contact Todd Owen Associate Director Center for Urban and Regional Studies Hickerson House
