  • Dr. Nicole J. Lucas
    received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1999 from Oberlin College where she majored in psychology and African American Studies She then received her Master of Science 2003 and Doctor of Philosophy 2008 degrees in Sociology from Virginia Tech Her areas of specialization are mental health health disparities and social policy Dr Lucas was a Minority Fellowship Program Fellow during her tenure as a doctoral student at Virginia Tech The Fellowship was supported by a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health NIMH After graduating with her doctoral degree Dr Lucas accepted a Post Doctoral Fellowship with the Center for Africana Studies and Race and Social Policy at Virginia Tech Presently Dr Lucas research centers on understanding the relationship between informal and formal social support and mental health outcomes among African Americans She has received funding from UNC Chapel Hill to support her research endeavors in this area Dr Lucas also received funding from The National Historically Black College and University Research Network to support her research pertaining to health disparities Her future goals include engaging in research that will allow her to have a holistic understanding of the social biological environmental and cultural factors associated with health disparities
