    B A and a minor in Biology She has been accepted into the Ph D program at Drexel University School of Biomedical Engineering Science and Health System for Fall 2012 with a full scholarship Harmin came to FSU in Spring 2011 as a transfer student Before coming to FSU she attended Fresno and Barstow Community Colleges Harmin was a scholar in Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement RISE Program She has worked in Dr Cevdet Akbay s research laboratory on a variety of projects using capillary electrophoresis Harmin has done very well in both research and academia with a GPA of 4 00 and 4 scientific oral and poster presentations She will have at least 3 manuscripts Harmin is also very active in extracurricular activities She is the executive Secretary of the Beta Kappa Chi National Scientific Honor Society a member of American Chemical Society ACS and ACS North Carolina Section She was also selected for the Chancellor for a Day Program Mr Reid Gunn B S in Chemistry his wife Mrs Shannon Gunn B A in Chemistry have both been accepted by doctor of pharmacy program at Campbell University Mr and Mrs They both joined FSU under different majors but decided to change their majors to chemistry after taking general science electives from exceptional faculty in the Department of Chemistry Physics Continued support from the department led to the fostering of personal relationships with their teachers and a burgeoning interest in physical sciences toxicology and pharmacology Shannon Gunn s interests in toxicology research led her to work with Dr Shirley Chao from the Department of Biological Sciences and pursue a minor in biology Shannon presented her research on acetylcholinesterase AChE inhibition following exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid in Danio rerio at the Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting during March 2012 in San Francisco CA Reid Gunn received an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Measurement Science and Engineering Fellowship at the National Institute for Standards and Technology NIST He received the opportunity to spend the summer conducting research at a national lab with Dr Joseph Conny studying the use of mixed phase combustion particles as mimics of internally mixed ambient atmospheric particles His research was presented at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting during December 2011 in San Francisco CA Honors received by Shannon while at FSU include participation in the McNair Scholar program receiving the departmental Student Service and Leadership Award in 2011 and acting as President of the Pre Pharmacy Association and vice president of the FSU Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society Reid was the recipient of the Dr Lee Maria Kleiss Chemistry Scholarship from 2010 2012 member of the Tau Sigma National Honor Society the Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society vice president of the Pre Pharmacy Association and president of the FSU Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society The Gunns developed a keen love for science and analytical research and ultimately decided to focus their interests in a way that was both personally meaningful and

    Emphasis of study may include courses in speech communication mass communication media production and journalism Those interested in speech communication may follow paths toward careers in speechwriting and public speaking communications consulting conflict negotiation and mediation consumer advocacy public relations organizational communication and training and human resource management Careers for those focusing on media might include station management television film and radio production and news writing reporting and editing For students interested in languages the department provides a variety of language courses including Spanish Chinese French and Yoruba The department seeks to improve the global readiness of its students preparing them to communicate effectively in other languages and across cultures in the region and around the globe Students are taught and mentored by highly dedicated professors from America and around the world who are proficient in the languages they teach as well as in the cultures that nurture those languages Our language programs offer rich linguistic and cultural expertise that help promote our internationalization efforts at FSU Students interested in languages may wish to follow a career as a teacher translator interpreter linguist foreign correspondent or work in customer service public relations or diplomatic corps Offered Programs Bachelors of Arts
