  • About Dr. Ronald E. McNair
    recognized for his work in the field of laser physics After graduation from MIT he became a staff physicist at the Hughes Research Lab in Malibu California Dr Ronald McNair lived an accomplished life as a research scientist family man pioneering astronaut karate expert jazz musician and a man of faith As a crusader for education his lifelong commitment was to continue his course to inspire students to dream big Dr McNair proclaimed I believe that in urban and rural cities there are great minds and talents with the hands that can control a spacecraft with the same dexterity that they control and handle a basketball This talent must not be wasted In 1978 Dr McNair was selected from a pool of eleven thousand as one of thirty five applicants for the NASA astronaut program In 1984 he became the second African American to fly in space aboard the STS 41 B Challenger mission Sadly on January 28 1986 the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded after launch from the Kennedy Space Center he was one of the seven person crew who died After his death Dr McNair was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and members of Congress provided funding

    a research project Fellows are in residence at FSU during the summer and a FSU faculty mentor is identified with whom the student will work closely in the execution of the research In addition participants are provided with GRE and graduate school preparation workshops along with other professional development seminars and scholarly activities If you would like to receive more information regarding our program or if you are a faculty member at FSU and you are interested in mentoring a student please contact our office Eligibility Requirements Prospective McNair Scholars must meet ONE of the following criteria Low income and first generation college graduate OR Underrepresented minority in graduate and doctoral programs e g African Americans Latino or Native American You must be interested in earning a Ph D in your area of interest The McNair Scholars program will accept students who want to pursue dual degrees such as MD PhD DDS PhD or PharmD PhD The McNair Scholars Program does not support students seeking to obtain professional degrees such as JD MD DDS or PharmD You must also Have a good record of academic achievement GPA of 3 0 or higher Be committed to attending graduate school Be a United States citizen or permanent resident Be a second semester sophomore or a junior 60 credits hours minimum The McNair Scholar Program Includes the Following Summer Research Internship Work with McNair Faculty mentors as a research assistant for eight weeks Earn an internship award of 2 800 while working on research Get assistance in paying for additional summer research expenses Attend professional conferences with faculty mentors Present research at local state regional and national conferences all expenses paid GRE Preparation GRE preparation sessions Fee waiver for the GRE if eligible Access to GRE preparation software Graduate School Applications Visits Obtain
