    year Their business plan says that they will offer a variety of cupcakes specialty cakes and other gourmet items Their offerings will include breakfast cupcakes such as the All American breakfast We plan to use the funding that we received from the New Venture Creation Contest to grow the Cakes Couture brand We also plan to acquire efficient equipment and supplies for our company said Brooks We hope to make the Murphy Center proud of its decision to award Cakes Couture first place in this year s competition Second place went to Stephen Andrews who owns Imported Performance an e commerce website specializing in automotive performance Andrews a senior in the UNT s College of Business received 15 000 for his company Andrews says that he hopes to use the money to open a brick and mortar store in the Dallas Fort Worth region rebuild the website and launch a motor sports division Third place went to Yianni Arestis and Bobby Mullins The duo hopes to use their 10 000 prize to open Denton s first brewery and restaurant Armadillo Ale Works Arestis and Mullins hope to open in the downtown Denton area by the end of 2011 Arestis is a graduate student in UNT s College of Business and Mullins is a 2007 graduate of UNT s Department of Radio Television and Film The New Venture Creation Contest is intended to simulate the real world process of entrepreneurs soliciting start up funds from early stage investors and venture capital firms Teams must include at least one full time UNT student The contest is sponsored by the Murphy Center for Entrepreneurship The center is housed in UNT s College of Business and opened its doors in 2000 with a 1 million donation from Ken and the late Shirley Murphy founders

    Unable to attend the POD conference were key team members from Harvard Dr Cathy Trower and Brendan Russell Established in 2000 the Menges award recognizes original research quantitative or qualitative that leads to systematic investigation and evidence based conclusions related to teaching learning and faculty development By collaborating with six public colleges and universities across the nation the team conducted focus group interviews with senior faculty to determine what motivates satisfies and dissatisfies them The results were used to inform the development of a pilot survey that was launched in Fall of 2010 at nine public universities across the nation According to Crutsinger quality faculty members are the hallmarks of a great university This project has increased our understanding of what institutions colleges departments and individuals can do to help senior faculty maintain momentum and have satisfying careers says Crutsinger Senior faculty are indeed the cornerstone of what we do at a university teach students contribute to the research enterprise and participate in important university service she adds Currently Crutsinger is serving in a dual appointment as associate dean and faculty special assistant to the provost She works directly with Dr Warren Burggren Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

    the back of the house prompted her to pursue a degree in hospitality management UNT was her first choice because of its diverse student body quality faculty and great industry support Moving to Denton was the best decision of my life says Beck The hospitality faculty taught me perseverance seeing something all the way through and a great work ethic she adds In fact the Houston native credits much of her culinary success to the lessons she learned while a student in the operations courses at the Club at College Inn now the Club at Gateway Center The minute I was in charge of that kitchen I knew that was where I belonged says Beck Her tenacity would carry her forward in her first job after graduation Determined to work for none but the best Beck secured a coveted apprenticeship with one of the most well known restaurants in Dallas The Mansion on Turtle Creek There she worked for Chef Dean Fearing and learned the value of paying her dues and exceeding customer expectations Beck s charisma and talent would soon lead her in a new direction as the star in the Oxygen Network s successful reality TV show The Naughty Kitchen with Chef Blythe Beck which aired in 2009 In this new role Beck had the opportunity show off culinary skills creating naughty dishes made with lots of butter beer cream bacon fat and love says Beck The outpouring of support from fans was the most surprising and really confirmed my purpose and approach to my work and life she adds Currently as the executive chef at one of the hottest spots in Dallas Beck carries her passion forward by giving customers amazing food at an excellent price The UNT honoree offers this advice to current students You have
