    capstone course of their degree program participated in a competition through the Target Corporation Campus Grant These competition grants require students to think explore investigate and propose possible solutions to many of the challenges that they may face in their career paths This competition has been a part of the MDR students industry participation for several years In the Fall semester nine teams of students worked during the semester on this Target Challenge as part of their course work and involvement with industry Target provides the guidelines for the challenge and Target representatives meet with the teams early in the semester as well as for the final judging near the end of the term The theme for the competition was Diverse Opportunities how can Target present relevant products and services for all of their guests and attract potential employees The MDR teams were charged with researching the full assortment of products that Target currently offers determining the competition regarding the issue and formulating possible existing diversity challenges in the recruitment of talent for Target The proposal consisted of a professional report SWOT analysis and a post implementation SWOT analysis Teams and their instructor Dr Jessica Strubel worked together to refine their solutions prior to the first round of competition The teams presented first to a faculty panel of judges who scored the presentations Only four teams advanced to the final stage where three judges from Target were on campus to judge the final four presentations The Target judges awarded first second and third place The first place team of Michelle Clark Home Furnishings Merchandising and Anne Fontana Merchandising center are pictured with three Target representatives including Chris Cahill from MDR Board of Governors and the first place check for 2 000 On Target Reality Merchandising MDR majors offer solutions to

    Although I am very excited about this new opportunity I am leaving the University of North Texas UNT with mixed emotions Dopson reflects I have been at UNT for the past 12 years and I absolutely love the students alumni faculty staff administration board members and industry partners that I have come to call family over the years This is a bitter sweet time for me I will sorely miss UNT but I am looking forward to new challenges in my career Dr Judith Forney Dean of the College of Merchandising Hospitality and Tourism spoke highly of Dr Dopson In her 12 years as Chair of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at UNT Dr Lea Dopson always exhibited a passion for hospitality education and the hospitality industry It was the driving force in all that she did and made her a nationally recognized leader in hospitality education The deanship in The Collins College of Hospitality Management at Cal Poly Pomona is the perfect opportunity for the next stage of her leadership I want to thank her for her tireless effort to bring hospitality management at UNT to levels of national and international recognition While her presence will be missed we extend hearty congratulations and wish her every success in her new position The Collins College of Hospitality Management thrives from a tradition of excellence and is consistently ranked among the nation s premier hospitality management programs Founded in 1973 The Collins College of Hospitality Management is the first and largest four year hospitality management degree program in California and the only hospitality management college on the West Coast Approximately 1 100 undergraduate and graduate students receive a superior education in the state of the art Collins College facilities where they learn to apply hospitality management theories and concepts
