  • PennDesign | Mason, M'Closkey Win 2012-2013 Rome Prizes
    Associate Professor and Chairman of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation claimed the National Endowment for the Arts Rome Prize During his fellowship Mason will conduct archival and field research documenting Gustavo Giovannoni s little known contributions to urban conservation Karen M Closkey Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture has won the Garden Club of America Rome Prize She has proposed A Field Guide to Rome Baedeker and Beyond as her topic It s a wonderful surprise to have not one but two Rome Prize winners this year coming from our faculty said Marilyn Jordan Taylo r Dean of PennDesign The Rome Prize is a great affirmation of excellent and thought provoking work Randy and Karen are putting forth in their fields and we re thrilled that they ll be able to build upon their research in the extraordinary setting and community of the American Academy in Rome Mason and M Closkey will begin their fellowship at the American Academy in Rome this fall Winners were formally recognized at the Janet Arthur Ross Rome Prize Ceremony held at the Harmonie Club in New York City on April 26 Over the years the Academy paid tribute to grand ideologies and fostered collaborative

    curiosity said Marilyn Jordan Taylor dean of PennDesign He is one of the great champions of design Educated as an architect Wurman received both his Bachelor s and Master s degrees in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania graduating in 1959 with the highest honors among them the Arthur Spayd Brookes Gold Medal He coined the term information architect to describe his unique confluence of training and talents Richard thinks out of the box Trained in architecture with a passion for information ideas and communication his creativity has opened radically new avenues for design His Access books transformed how people understand and use cities and his pioneering work with information systems continues to influence how designers shape form places and ideas said James Corner Chair and Professor of Landscape Architecture at PennDesign Richard is simply brilliant During his time at Penn Wurman developed a deep personal and professional relationship with the seminal architect and teacher Louis I Kahn He had a 13 year architectural partnership in Philadelphia and was a director of the Group for Environmental Education He is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects FAIA Wurman is currently developing the WWW conferences celebrating improvised conversations or intellectual jazz and continues to work on his global cartographic initiative 19 20 21 Stoss Landscape Urbanism a Boston based collaborative design and planning studio led by founding principals Chris Reed MLA 95 and Scott Bishop MLA 05 claimed the 2012 National Design Award for Landscape Architecture The firm s projects include The CityDeck in Green Bay Wis Erie Street Plaza in Milwaukee The Plaza at Harvard University in Cambridge Mass and Bass River Park on Cape Cod Mass The award recipients will be honored at a gala dinner Wednesday Oct 17 at Pier Sixty in New York To learn more

  • PennDesign | Master in Environmental Building Design (MEBD)
    developed to train architects in the new skills and knowledge required for environmental design and especially in the design techniques with which those skills must be integrated into the practice of architecture The one year course of study includes coursework on building performance simulation integrated building design building envelopes and systems lighting daylighting and the theory and practice of environmental design Coursework is complemented and extended by a Performance Design Workshop and then explored in depth in an intensive Environmental Design Studio in the early summer The Department of Architecture at Penn has gathered a remarkable team of experts to teach in the new program The MEBD will operate in close coordination with the Penn Tsinghua T C Chan Center for Building Simulation and Energy Studies drawing on the expertise of faculty engaged in research at the center and providing case studies and research projects for students in the MEBD The new program also builds on the certificate program in Ecological Architecture currently available to students in the Master of Architecture program though it significantly increases the focus and intensity to advance architects skills in this crucial area of design and technology Curriculum The MEBD curriculum has four required courses a selection of designated electives some optional open electives and a design laboratory The structure of the curriculum is outlined in the chart below The sequence of required courses develops from broad principles and simulation skills in the Fall semester to integration of those skills in the Spring semester culminating in the design laboratory in the Summer session Designated electives support the required sequence with more detailed explorations of environmental technologies at different scales from building components to urban development Optional electives allow students to explore courses outside of the program that extend or complement their studies MEBD Curriculum Fall

    Tau Sigma Delta Gold Medal an international award presented by the Honor Society in Architecture and Allied Arts to one firm each year The Diana Center a new multi use arts building at Barnard College establishes a new nexus for social cultural and intellectual life for the campus and city and was recently recognized with a 2011 AIA National Honor Award and a New York State AIA Honor award Additionally it won the New York State AIA s Best Building in 2010 and has received a Progressive Architecture Award from Architect Magazine and has been featured in Lotus Metropolis Magazine Architect Magazine The Plan and was recently exhibited in Barcelona s World Architecture Festival Weiss Manfredi won the international competition to design the Taekwondo Park in Muju Korea and is working on a new campus for Aga Khan University in East Africa Other current projects include the Hunters Point South Park a waterfront park on the East River in Queens New York the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center scheduled to open this spring and the Krishna P Singh Center for Nanotechnology at the University of Pennsylvania Other built works include the Museum of the Earth in Ithaca New York the Smith College Campus Center in Northampton Massachusetts and the competition winning Women s Memorial and Education Center at Arlington National Cemetery Her firm s projects have been featured in the Museum of Modern Art the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum the Venice Architectural Biennale the São Paolo Biennial of International Architecture and Design the Cooper Hewitt Museum s Design Culture Now Triennial the National Building Museum Harvard University the International Landscape Biennale in Barcelona and the Design Center in Essen Germany Marion Weiss recently spoke at Penn s Terrain of Water and Harvard s Graduate School of Design conference Territories of
