    the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia From PlanPhilly com A growing network of young people is challenging the perception that historic preservation is an old activist s game Incorporating new communication and promotional tactics as well as their professional training the Young Friends of the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia are becoming a strong voice and an effective force in protecting the city s historic resources Their social media fingerprints can be found on the successful effort to preserve the Fairmount Park Welcome Center during LOVE Park s planned renovation Their sweat equity and professional skills have assisted in window restoration of Victorian homes on Viola Street in Parkside And their hearts have kept the focus on renovation of the Hale Building an architectural wonder at Juniper and Chestnut Streets They have become an energetic complement to the work of the Preservation Alliance and they are attracting a lot of attention and appreciation for the value of Philadelphia s historic fabric This is a group interested in expanding the boundaries of what preservation means Patrick Grossi advocacy director at the Preservation Alliance said And while many young friends groups are typically about social events as a way to drive membership

  • PennDesign Team Among Three Finalists in UrbanSOS Competition | PennDesign
    as well as colleagues at Van Alen Institute The brief called on multi disciplinary teams of students to envision more resilient food water and energy systems for supplying cities and regions today and in the future Teammates Joseph Rosenberg MLA 15 Daniel Lau MArch 16 candidate and Lindsay L Rule MLA MArch 15 responded with a scheme entitled The Third Reserve that transforms a vast site of underutilized undeveloped land in Northeast Singapore into a new reserve where parcels are intensely programmed toward industrial scale food production According to the proposal the scheme creates a variety of urban districts organized linearly along an infrastructural band which bundles public transportation systems and industrial distribution networks together forming a spatial filter between the urban fabric and the productive landscape core The landscape itself provides a supplementary food resource for Singapore s growing population by mixing traditional horticultural methods with alternative high yield techniques such as vertical subterranean and aquaculture farms This allows for optimized output during the year and opens up land for public recreational use The Third Reserve provides new urban conditions which promote intensified land use strategies that help frame public corridors water management systems and transportation nodes This year s competition culminates in an evening charrette where the three final teams present their schemes to this year s jury at the A D Museum in Los Angeles on October 15 2015 The jury is chaired by Bill Hanway Executive Vice President Global Architecture AECOM Members of the jury at the A D event will include Claire Bonham Carter Vice President Design Planning AECOM Stephen Engblom Senior Vice President Cities AECOM David van der Leer Executive Director Van Alen Institute Bryna Lipper Vice President 100 Resilient Cities and Mimi Zeiger Co president Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design

  • PennDesign in China: Two-Year Project on Cities and ‘Durations’ Exhibition Awarded Funding | PennDesign
    The project began in Beijing last March when PennDesign hosted representatives of 23 leading Chinese universities in a roundtable discussion of challenges facing Chinese cities and the role that design can play in achieving a higher quality of life The roundtable which was entitled Coordinates provided key input for PennDesign s grant from the China Research and Engagement Fund CREF which was awarded to the School on September 10 We were delighted to discover the enthusiasm among our Chinese colleagues for this initiative said Dean Taylor As Chinese artists and designers become more prominent globally there is much to learn from idea exchange PennDesign also received a second grant award for DURATIONS An Investigation on Architecture Practice in China an exhibit designed and curated by Professor Rahim together with Associate Professor of Urban Design Stefan Al The exhibit which was installed at the PennWharton China Center PWCC Beijing as part of a weeklong series of events celebrating Penn s engagement in China included 35 projects in China by 24 architecture firms from across China Europe and the US Ninety one architects and architect educators participated in a symposia held at PWCC The exhibit featured a section on the Chinese architecture scholars who came to study design at Penn in the early decades of the 20th century among them Liang Sicheng and Lin Hui Yin who returned to China to establish the county s earliest university architecture programs The two year project will address an overarching question regarding the future of cities How can Chinese cities more effectively maximize the benefits and reduce the social and environmental costs of accelerated modernity The questions will be explored in four streams of activities which will address conservation of buildings districts and landscapes of China the role of art and design in expressing culture
