JOIN LINEAGES AND TRAJECTORIES THE CASE OF ARCHITECTURE PEDAGOGY THIS SYMPOSIUM TAKES PLACE ON FRIDAY MARCH 27TH AND SATURDAY MARCH 28TH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA S SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE Symposium Lineages and Trajectories the case of Architecture Pedagogy Pre Symposium Friday March 27th 2015 Hard Hat Tour of the Rotunda under construction 4 00 PM Graduate Open House Lecture delivered by Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi 6 00 PM Dinner 8 00 PM hosted by Iñaki Alday and Margarita Jover Garden Room Hotel E Academical Village March 28 th 2015 9 30 AM 5 30 PM Inundated by the ever expanding charge and challenge of responding to the plethora of environmental and socio economic forces that shape our contemporary reality Architecture finds itself at once equipped to respond to these challenges and simultaneously sidestepped by procedures and mechanisms that for long have limited its capacity to operate as a major player in reshaping the built environment New tools and technologies provide schools and practice alike with a continuous stream of challenges and possibilities Overwhelmed by the mandates of an ever complex context the discipline seems to be stalled in a temporary yet extended moment of amnesia forgetful of much that has happened in its recent past leaving considerable gaps in its pedagogy Thirty years after Jaque Robertson invited a bunch of white guys and three Japanese Sorkin 86 to the Rotunda to make the Charlottesville Tapes the vanguard of the discipline is as diverse as its scope is wide and its methodologies are varied rendering the role of architecture schools as the grounds for inspiring and training the next generation of visionaries more complicated than ever This symposium will consider the complex conditions of a pedagogy arising from the confluence of a Modernist lineage with contemporary methods and processes

the Forms of Informal urban development in three cities in Colombia Bogota Medellin and Cartagena An important part of the program involves visits to neighborhoods buildings events architecture offices interviews to politicians urban and community activists and architects Last year the first installment of the program was invested in understanding and unpacking the overall forms of informal dynamics in the three cities in a broad level Forms of informality is a statement that critiques the term informal in order to unveil some of its forms Short term and top down politico institutional strategies that reinforce public infrastructures like those by Mayor Sergio Fajardo co exist with bottom up and long term grassroots processes such as those by Centro Cultural Nuestra Gente or Casa Amarilla just to name a couple in Medellin In Bogota on the other hand similar interventions are developed such as the Porvenir School or the sports facility in Soacha by El Equipo de Mazzanti Under Mayor Peñalosa Bogota initiates its transformation focusing on the improvement on public space and accessibility with strategies like transmilenio a transportation system that has an important effect in improving accessibility between the so called formal and the informal In our trip it is also important to critically consider the other end of the urban spectrum High end residential towers of the richest citizens tend to fall into an excess of formality through well defined limits in other words fences and sterile urban spaces derived from mono functionality and extreme demands for safety Find more information about our Colombia Study Abroad program here Students from outside the University of Pennsylvania Both of the above programs are open to graduate students outside of the University of Pennsylvania pending available space in the programs as Penn undergraduates and graduates are given first priority Interested students
