    Gulf Coast Community College MGCCC The program covers the history of Beauvoir in Biloxi Mississippi the home of Jefferson Davis in his later years which then became a home for old soldiers who fought for the Confederacy and finally a public memorial to the life of Jefferson Davis and the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library The program was written by Charles L Sullivan chair of the Social Studies Department at MGCCC

  • Dabney (Thomas Gregory) Collection, 1892, 1910, 1914, 1915, 1920, 1926, 1937, 1938, 1965
    in Virginia and by November 1862 he was a member of Company F 1 st Mississippi Light Artillery and was considered an expert gunner During the later years of the war Major Dabney fought in the Battle of Port Hudson and Ship Island and was a prisoner of war at Ship Island At the close of the war Major Dabney resumed his engineering work by becoming involved with the Louisiana levee systems the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad and the Vicksburg Shreveport and Pacific Railroad where he gained much experience After the flood of 1884 when the entire Mississippi Delta was inundated the Yazoo Mississippi Delta Levee District was established Thomas G Dabney was chosen as Chief Engineer in April 1884 where he was to develop a levee system to protect the Delta from floods From 1884 to 1920 Dabney remained the Chief Engineer where with the expenditure of 15 million he successfully achieved his goal of Delta flood protection In June of 1920 he resigned his position because of age and physical means but he was retained as consulting engineer until his death on March 5 1929 at age 85 Throughout the country Dabney was consulted for his views experience and opinions relating to flood control he was known as the Dean of Levee Engineers Thomas Gregory Dabney was married to Frances Fanny Fannie Bowmar they were the parents of seven children Augustine Lee Joseph Bowmar Thomas G Frederick Marye James C Elizabeth B and Frances Mays Dabney Joseph Hamilton Daviess Bowmar was father of Frances Fanny Fannie Bowmar Dabney s wife JHD s brother was Herman Bowmar Jr Bersailles Kentucky Herman Jr s son was Daniel Mayes Bowmar Daniel Mayes Bowmar s son was Aitcheson Alexander Bowmar Editor Woodford Sun newspaper Versailles Kentucky AA Bowmar s daughter Emily

  • Dahl (Kathleen) Freedom Summer Collection, 1963-2003
    Mississippi reached the Milwaukee papers she and her family received threats and hate mail After visiting the project in Holly Springs on their return to California both Kathy and John remained active in fund raising and publicity for Mississippi civil rights efforts Kathy severed as chair of the East Bay Friends of SNCC in 1965 In 1966 her first child Aileen was born Kathy John and their new baby spent a year in Brazil 1966 67 funded by a Ford Foundation grant to improve the School of Forestry at the Rural University at Vicosa Kathy s second child a daughter named Elizabeth was born upon their return in 1968 Kathy and John divorced in 1973 and in 1974 she married Richard Rean Her third child Richard V Rean was born in 1975 Richard and Kathy divorced around 1978 In June of 1979 Kathy received her MA in history from The University of Minnesota in Minneapolis but continued to work in nursing In the early 1990s she was a nurse and the acting clinic manager of Hennepin County Medical Center s Psych Day Treatment Program in Minneapolis She received her PhD in History in 1995 from The University of Minnesota As of 2003 Kathleen Dahl resides in Minneapolis where she works part time collects books and spends time with her grandchildren Sources Dr Kathleen Dahl Kathleen Dahl Freedom Summer Collection Ruth Koenig Papers Larry Rubin Oral History Internet Sources Scope and Content The bulk of this collection consists of materials that document the Civil Rights Movement and Freedom Summer in Holly Springs Mississippi Included is biographical information regarding Freedom Summer volunteers photographs correspondence subject files printed materials and artifacts For the researchers convenience the collection has been divided into seven series Series I Biographical Information consists of biographical sketches of many of the Freedom Summer Volunteers that are featured in this collection Series II Photographs hold over one hundred original photographs from 1964 1994 some photocopies and computer scans of photographs and occasional brief commentaries Some photos are of arrests demonstrations a bombed church volunteers and reunions Series III Correspondence comprises letters sent to and written by Kathleen Dahl from June 23 1964 to October 26 1999 Of special interest is a thank you letter from Fannie Lou Hamer Many letters are to Kathy after she left the Holly Springs project and contain information about the status of the project There are some examples of hate mail she received because of her involvement Series IV Personal Subject Files encompasses correspondence documents artifacts artwork reports and writings from Holly Springs Volunteers and people related with the project Series V Topical Subject Files contain a variety of materials such as Freedom Summer reports Kathy s Mississippi Nursing Certificate audio and video recordings of interviews with Kathy and other volunteers Kathy s Mississippi license plate covered in Mississippi red clay dirt and Freedom Summer reunion materials Series VI Printed Materials includes flyers brochures newspaper clippings magazine clippings and artifacts Several published articles written by

  • Daughters of the American Revolution, John Rolfe Chapter, Records, 1936-1979
    the summer months Among the regular functions of the John Rolfe Chapter are Honoring high school seniors during the month of February through the DAR Good Citizens Program Students are selected from area schools on the bases of dependability service leadership and patriotism and are eligible to compete at the state conference State winners are eligible to compete in the national contest in which three overall winners are chosen Formerly for girls only the program is now open to all seniors Sponsoring an American History essay contest also in February for students in fifth through eighth grades Commemorating Constitution Week September 17 23 Promoting correct use of the American flag Compiling genealogical records During World War II the John Rolfe Chapter worked in conjunction with the Hattiesburg Lions Club and the American Red Cross to raise money for blood plasma needed for American service men and women In 1945 the chapter began a genealogical collection which is housed in the Hattiesburg Public Library The chapter has also donated books to the William David McCain Library and Archives at the University of Southern Mississippi and currently sponsors a subscription to the Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine in the library s name Scope and Content This collection contains materials pertinent to the John Rolfe Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution 1936 1979 the Mississippi Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution 1937 1978 and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution 1942 1976 which have been divided into three series Series I John Rolfe Chapter Series II Mississippi Society Series III National Society Series I begins with the Constitution and By Laws of the John Rolfe Chapter followed by a book of the chapter s history 1936 1969 a handwritten book of minutes of monthly meetings Jan 8 1954 May 5 1971 treasurer s records 1946 1966 chapter yearbooks 1941 1979 materials relevant to the Correct Use of the Flag Committee the Military Honor Roll comprised of biographical information on members relatives who served in the armed forces during World War II 1943 records of the Blood Plasma Fund 1943 1944 information on Christmas legends and colonial customs 1941 1944 materials for a talk on the Stark Homestead a colonial home in Manchester New Hampshire 1942 1943 correspondence 1936 1964 a few newsclippings concerning the DAR ca 1943 1944 and an account of the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Marion Ramey of Wayne County Mississippi Jan 13 1942 Completing the series are nine scrapbooks which contain a comprehensive record of the John Rolfe Chapter s activities between 1936 and 1971 as well as news of the state and national societies Much of the information is in the form of newsclippings from local state and national newspapers However there are also yearbooks essays photographs articles and a few items of memorabilia Of particular interest in the 1936 1941 scrapbook are a paper entitled Reminiscence which contains a touching tribute to the first President General of the
