  • Gray (W.G. “Bud”) Papers, 1962-1998
    patrolmen and was pictured alongside a defiant Lieutenant Governor Paul B Johnson on the front pages of several national newspapers From 1964 to 1968 Gray was sheriff of Forrest County Mississippi racial tensions stemming from civil rights activism complicated his work Gray was largely amenable to the needs and demands of local blacks and civil rights workers a fact that angered some white natives The January 1964 Freedom Day Hattiesburg s Freedom Summer and the January 1966 murder of local civil rights leader Vernon Dahmer all took place during Gray s tenure as sheriff Scope and Content This collection consists primarily of materials related to Gray s law enforcement career in Mississippi Folder 1 contains four letters personal correspondence mostly related to Gray s 1962 newspaper appearance with Paul B Johnson September 1962 May 1967 Folder 2 contains newspaper clippings including many from papers carrying the widely distributed wire photo with Paul B Johnson at the University of Mississippi September 1962 December 1983 Folder 3 consists of materials related to an unsuccessful lawsuit brought against Gray by Deavours Nix of Laurel Mississippi Nix was prominent among the group of Jones County Klansmen responsible for the 1966 murder of Hattiesburg civil rights activist Vernon Dahmer Includes letters and an official copy of the judge s decision April 1966 July 1967 Folder 4 contains five photographs 1962 1998 Folder 5 contains various anti black propaganda materials Includes two flyers and two undated reprints of Depression era communist tracts aimed at the black community ca 1960s Folder 6 contains a brief undated resume current to 1971 Sources Gray William G Bud An Oral History with William G Bud Gray Hattiesburg University of Southern Mississippi 1999 Directed Verdict Given Defendants Hattiesburg American 3 May 1967 Bowers Arson Trial is Set for May 14 Hattiesburg

  • Great Britain, Parliament, English Parliamentary Acts, 1653
    load of the court promised to be substantial The bill was debated in Parliament for six days which showed numerous differences between Parliament and Cromwell s executive Council of State The choice of judges for the Court of Admiralty was a particularly contentious affair Even more contentious would be the debates over legal reform The Hale Commission appointed to investigate the unsatisfactory condition of the English legal system was formed at the beginning of 1652 as the result of pressure from the New Model Army The commission drew its authority from the Rump Parliament but found itself reporting to Barebone s Parliament in late 1653 Many of the Hale Commission s proposals were extremely radical for the time including the one passed by Parliament on November 4 1653 An Act for Redress of Delays and Mischiefs Arising by Writs of Error and Writs of False Judgement in Several Cases this act abolished a great deal of the appellate process in English Courts Dissatisfied with the conduct of the legislative assemblies he had created Oliver Cromwell dissolved the last Barebone s Parliament on December 13 1653 Cromwell then installed himself as Lord Protector an essentially dictatorial position on December 16 1653 thus ending the republican Puritan Commonwealth and beginning the absolutist essentially secular Protectorate Scope and Content This collection contains two acts of the English Parliament which were passed in 1653 Both printed acts appear to be leaves from a published collection of parliamentary legislation An Act for Setling the Jurisdiction of the Court of Admiralty and An Act for Redress of Delays and Mischiefs Arising by Writs of Error and Writs of False Judgement in Several Cases are apparently from A Collection of Several Acts of Parliament for 1653 Henry Scobell Clerk of the Parliament periodically published such collections of

  • Greer (Alexander and Joseph Thomas) Papers, 1862-1865, 1873-1877
    in the regimental hospital because of this limitation Corporal Alexander Greer died on July 2 1863 in the Battle of Gettysburg Joseph Thomas Greer eldest son of Alexander Greer was also a shoemaker He enlisted at the age of 18 in Company E of the 155th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry United States Army on August 15 1864 His regiment served in the Army of the Potomac during the fall of 1864 and the spring of 1865 He was wounded in March of 1865 during one of the many battles in which his regiment saw action Greer was also at Appomattox Virginia when General Lee surrendered his army to General Grant on April 9 1865 He was discharged from the army on June 2 1865 Scope and Content This collection consists of the service records and family correspondence of Alexander Greer and his son Joseph Tomas Greer both of whom served with Pennsylvania regiments during the Civil War The approximately 65 letters were written on patriotic letterhead stationery There are twenty one letters from Alexander to his wife Sara and their four children spaning the period between September 1862 to Jun3 1863 They recount Alexander s service experiences during that period when his unit guarded railroad lines in Maryland and was later stationed in Washington D C Alexander writes of food shortages and how he used his skill as a shoemaker to make money between the paymaster s infrequent visits His letters also tell of his nursing duties detailing the soldiers injuries and illnesses He often speaks of his patriotic duties to his country and family The letters also provide much insight into the status of Alexander s family during his absence and reflect his concern for his family and relatives and for family affairs and finances Alexander instructs his children particularly

  • Grimke (Thomas S.) Address, 1831
    footsteps and practiced law He served as a South Carolina state senator from 1826 to 1830 Grimke took an unpopular pro Union stand though the sectional issue was not as emotional then as it was to become A champion of temperance and world peace he wrote several pamphlets on these topics He also wrote several pamphlets on education which he thought should be utilitarian and religious Grimke thought science promoted the improvement of the people and therefore supported its teaching He believed in higher education for women modern history and modern literature as important parts of the curricula as well as manual training and that the Bible was basic to education from the primary grades through university education The pamphlet in this collection explains Grimke s position on the place of the Bible in education Scope and Content The collection consists of a printed address by Thomas S Grimke South Carolina State Senator 1826 1830 at a religious meeting in Charleston South Carolina held March 29 1831 The address focused upon the resolution of the American Sunday School Union concerning Sunday Schools in the Valley of the Mississippi In this fifteen page address Grimke states his reasons for believing the
