  • Hammond (Kelly James) Papers, 1956-1962
    He was a lawyer farmer and merchant in Marion County Serving in the Mississippi House of Representatives 1928 1932 he was a member of the Little Three a group that fought for Governor Bilbo s programs against the ultra conservative bloc The last colorful exponent of the Bilbo school he often sported a red tie red hankerchief and horseshoe diamond stickpin Hammond ran for the governorship of Mississippi in 1951 placing sixth in a field of seven candidates In 1956 he was elected senator from the 39th district representing Walthall Marion and Jefferson Davis counties In the Senate he was chairman of the Constitution Committee vide chairman of the Corporations Committee and a member of the Highways Insurance Judiciary Universities and Colleges and State Library Committees He was in favor of segregation liberalization of social security reform of the Columbia Training School and the Homestead Exemption benefit He opposed a new Mississippi constitution and was successful in blocking Governor Coleman s attempts to call a constitutional convention in the late 1950 s He was also opposed to consolidation of public schools Hammond died in 1960 in a Louisiana hospital after an illness of several weeks His wife Otelia served the remainder of his senatorial term and in 1962 was elected to the House of Representatives Kelly J Hammond was a memberof the Baptist Church Farm Bureau Disabled American Veterans and Mississippi Bar Association Scope and Content This collection consists of three memorial tributes two papers one by Mrs Hammond arguing against compulsory unitization various newspaper clippings dating 1956 1962 and two certificates The clippings form the largest part of the collection Several of the clippings are newspaper photos of Kelly J Hammond and his wife There are two untitled articles on Governor Coleman and his attempts to call a constitutional

    Gulfport Captain Hardy died of a heart attack at the age of 80 on February 17 1917 He is interred in Gulfport Sources Hardy Toney No Compromise With Principle New York American Book Stratford Press Inc 1946 Fike Claude E William H Hardy An Extraordinary Life The Hattiesburg Story 100 years of Growth Hattiesburg Hattiesburg American 1982 Scope and Content The Hardy William H and Hattie L Papers consists of original and duplicate correspondence a memorial book to Hattie Lott Hardy and a scrapbook commemorating the dedication ceremonies of a bust of Captain Hardy in Gulfport Most of the collection is correspondence There is a total of 127 letters 106 are from Captain Hardy to his second wife Hattie 18 are from Hattie to Captain Hardy 2 letters are from their son Lamar to his mother and one letter is from Mattie Captain Hardy s oldest daughter All the letters from the Captain to Hattie were written after their marriage Most were sent from London or New York A few were sent from Meridian to Mobile while Hattie was there visiting her family The letters deal with personal matters although some discuss the Captain s business interests He confides in Hattie his concern over selling the bonds that will finance his railroad project and also discusses sightseeing trips in London and New York Most of Hattie s letters were written before her marriage to Captain Hardy These letters were either written from Louisville Kentucky or Mobile Alabama The letters are all of a personal nature and chronicle the brief courtship of the Hardys There are also a few letters that Hattie wrote after her wedding The three letters from the children deal with family matters The two from Lamar were written while he was in Chicago with his father on a business trip The letter from Mattie was written in Brandon Mississippi while she was there visiting friends On January 6 1929 in Gulfport Mississsippi a bust of Captain William H Hardy was dedicated At the ceremony such dignitaries as then Governor Theodore G Bilbo Lieutenant Governor Bidwell Adam and Senator Pat Harrison attended A scrapbook compiled to commemorate this dedication is a part of this collection The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings speeches photographs blueprints programs invitations and handbills At the time of the dedication ceremonies the Hardy family held a reunion The scrapbook also includes some miscellaneous information about the Hardy family including a copy of a booklet that Captain Hardy wrote Recollections of Reconstruction in East and Southeast Mississippi Related Collections M380 Hardy William H and Sallie J Papers Box and Folder List Box 1 Folder 1 Original Correspondence June 11 1873 March 28 1888 Folder 2 Original Correspondence June 1 1888 July 30 1888 Folder 3 Original Correspondence August 1 1888 November 29 1889 Folder 4 Original Correspondence December 3 1989 June 27 1891 Folder 5 Original Correspondence July 2 1891 July 30 1894 undated letters Folder 6 Duplicate Correspondence June 11 1873 March 28 1888 Folder

  • Harmon (Duncan Sibley) Record Books, 1893-1903
    United States Title 17 United States Code Form of Material Three record books and a check register of Mr Duncan Sibley Harmon covering the period 1893 1903 The records document his personal cash finances and also contain brief narratives of his activities Mr Harmon was born in 1859 in Demopolis Alabama and died in 1928 in Hattiesburg Mississippi He worked for the Railway Mail Service in Meridian Mississippi from 1877 to 1897 with his brother in law Sion S Cope in a mercantile business in Paulding Mississippi from 1898 to 1899 as bookkeeper and bursar at Meridian Female College from 1906 to 1920 as editor of The Free Press in Poplarville Mississippi from 1919 to 1920 as editor of The Way of Faith in Columbia South Carolina from 1921 to 1925 and as bookkeeper at the Hattiesburg American newspaper in Hattiesburg Mississippi from 1925 until his death in 1928 He was very active in the Methodist Church the YMCA and other charitable organizations He was married for thirty two years to Anna Jane Saunders Harmon and they had two daughters Mary Stuart and Frances Gayle For additional biographical information see Francis Stuart Harmon s A Good Inheritance A Genealogical Record

  • Harper (William E.) Muster Out Record, 1898
    enrolled by John W Henderson Captain of the 2nd Mississippi Volunteer Infantry He was mustered into service on June 2 1898 at Jackson Mississippi by Lieutenant Lockwood of the regular Army who mustered in all of the Mississippi Volunteers Like virtually all of the Mississippi volunteers Harper s date of enrollment was at first erroneously stated His enrollment date was recorded as May 16 1898 instead of May 1 1898 so that at the end of his time of service pay was due him from May 1 to May 16 Like many other volunteers Harper neither finished his training nor saw active duty because the war lasted only 3 1 2 months He and the other Mississippi volunteers were on verbal furlough for 30 days beginning September 9 1898 as per General Order 130 CS Adjutant General s Office The furlough was extended to November 27 1898 by direction of the Secretary of War in telegrams dated October 4 and November 1 1898 He and his whole company were mustered out of service on December 20 1898 at Columbia Tennessee by Captain W B Homer of the 6th Artillery Scope and Content This collection consists of the muster out record
