  • Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera Collection, 1970s-2001

  • Hattiesburg Department of Urban Development / Historic Preservation Planner, 1991
    the National Register of Historic Places It was a joint effort of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History the Hattiesburg Historic Commission and the City of Hattiesburg with its consultant Koch and Wilson Architects The three neighborhoods targeted by the survey were North Main Street Newman Buschman Streets and Mobile Street Mobile Street was the main street of a historically black neighborhood near downtown Hattiesburg There were shops restaurants movie theaters and a historic 1890 s hotel all aimed at black customers during the Jim Crow era when African Americans were denied access to racially segregated public accommodations The Mobile Street businesses thrived with both local customers and black military personnel stationed at nearby Camp Shelby Today because of several floods and the success of the Civil Rights Movement of the sixties most of the black owned businesses of Mobile Street have closed and the buildings have been demolished The hotel located at 507 Mobile Street and known as the Woods Guest House in the sixties served during Freedom Summer 1964 as the headquarters for Council of Federated Organizations COFO staff as well as the headquarters of Hattiesburg native Mrs Victoria Jackson Gray s campaign for the U S Senate on the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party MFDP ticket The hotel was destroyed by fire in September 1998 The Masonic Lodge at 522 Mobile Street served as the sixties headquarters of the Hattiesburg Ministers Union later Delta Ministry an organization of pastors and rabbis under the National Council of Churches which assisted local blacks to register to vote In the front of the Lodge was the radio and television repair shop of local Civil Rights leader Mr J C Fairley The Lodge is still standing Gone are most of the buildings on either side of the 500 block of Mobile

  • Hattiesburg Historical Photographs
    Mississippi M246 246 to M214 479 Series III Miscellaneous Materials Concerning Hattiesburg Mississippi Series IV Photographic Negatives Series I consists of photographs that Dr Kenneth G McCarty Jr compiled for his book Hattiesburg A Pictorial History These photographs document the growth and development of Hattiesburg Mississippi from the late 1800s to the 1980s Included are photographs that document the railroad and timber industries residential and commercial growth natural disasters the growth of local educational institutions and social events Not all of the photographs that appear in the book are included in this collection It should also be noted that for some of the images that do appear in the book there is no positive image available only a negative In addition several photographs pertaining to the University of Southern Mississippi are also available in Archives Record Group 2 USM Photographs in the McCain Library and Archives Images in this series are arranged in the order in which they appear in the book Series II is comprised of photographs that document the progress of Hattiesburg but were not included in the book Hattiesburg A Pictorial History These photographs span periods from the late 19th to the late 20th centuries and are supplemental to those included in McCarty s publication These images reflect the same topics as those in Series I For some of the images in this series there is no positive image only a negative Some images in this series are of areas outside Hattiesburg Series III contains a variety of information concerning Hattiesburg Included are the Hattiesburg Area Historical Society s calendar series for the years 1976 1980 1984 and 1986 which feature images from Hattiesburg s past and a 1993 Forrest General Hospital calendar exhibiting old Hattiesburg residences An 1898 booklet entitled Facts about Hattiesburg is also in this series as well as a pamphlet circulated by the Hattiesburg Commercial Club describing the various resources which enabled local agricultural and industrial progress to take place There are also coloring books that highlight the history of Hattiesburg and an abundance of Hattiesburg American newspaper clippings featuring past images of life in the Hub City Series IV consists of negatives for many of the photographs within the collection as well as some negatives for which positive images are not available These too are documentary in nature and depict the growth of Hattiesburg This collection will be of interest to anyone interested in the history of Hattiesburg and its social commercial educational and political development through the years Other Finding Aids Box and Folder List Photograph Log Box and Folder List Series I Photographs Included in Hattiesburg A Pictorial History Box 1 Folder 1 Photographs M246 1 M246 10 Folder 2 Photographs M246 11 M246 20 Folder 3 Photographs M246 21 M246 30 Folder 4 Photographs M246 31 M246 40 Folder 5 Photographs M246 41 M246 50 Folder 6 Photographs M246 51 M246 60 Folder 7 Photographs M246 61 M246 70 Folder 8 Photographs M246 71 M246 80 Folder 9 Photographs
