  • Hurricanes of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Collection, ca. 1715-1985

  • Ideal Primitive Baptist Church (Petal, Mississippi) Minutes, ca. 1888-2006
    of the United States Title 17 United States Code Form of Material Box 1 which has been returned to the donor contained Minute books for Ideal Primitive Baptist Church in Petal Mississippi which began as Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church sometime prior to 1890 The church appears to have been dormant from about 1901 1908 when it was revived and the name was changed to Ideal Primitive Baptist Church Information in the Minute Books spans the period 1888 2000 5 volumes Box 2 included in this collection are minutes of two churches formed as branches of Ideal Primitive Baptist Church Sapp Hill Church in Perry County Mississippi formed in 1918 and Runnelstown Primitive Baptist Church also in Perry County formed in 1936 after Sapp Hill Church was dissolved Minutes of the Sapp Hill Church are from 1918 1936 and the Runnelstown Minutes date from 1936 1975 2 volumes Accession Number AM06 55 Dates 2006 Volume 1 item Provenance Given by Mr Tony Mozingo Copyright This collection may be protected from unauthorized copying by the Copyright Law of the United States Title 17 United States Code Form of Material One paperback copy of History of Ideal primitive Baptist Church by Anthony

  • Indian Claims in Mississippi. Petition of the Citizens of the State of Mississippi, Remonstrating Against Indian Claims, 1836
    citizens they would be eligible to receive a land grant of 640 acres east of the Mississippi River where they already resided This treaty was an effort to bring all land within the state s boundaries under the state s control Previously the Choctaws were not subject to state laws even though the lands they held were within Mississippi s boundaries Speculators took advantage of the treaty by producing documents purporting them to be powers of attorney for the Indians Settlers already on these lands protested the speculator s claims Scope and Content Speculators under the cover of Choctaw Indian claims to land in Mississippi by the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek 1830 sold titles to land already inhabited but without clear titles The inhabitants had trusted that they would be able to buy their lands at a fair price from the government and not at the astronomical prices charged by the speculators This printed petition containing 91 signatures of persons from Mississippi and other states asked the U S Congress to pass a law setting up a tribunal near the land offices to scrutinize claims The tribunal was to have the power to reject or confirm and to compel

  • Jack (Guy) Letter, 1922
    was elected Circuit Court Clerk of Kemper County serving until 1880 He married Augusta Edwards on October 1 1884 In 1919 he wrote Iconoclast in which he asserted that many people within Kemper County were corrupt and resorted to criminal activity to further their positions One such accusation was that many citizens of Scooba Mississippi and surrounding towns were involved in life insurance fraud whereby they conspired to take out life insurance policies on individuals who they would then proceed to murder in order to collect the life insurance money Needless to say this publication did not improve Jack s popularity within Kemper County and he was subsequently sued for libel Guy Jack died in 1931 Sources Lloyd James B ed Lives of Mississippi Authors 1817 1967 Jackson University Press of Mississippi 1981 268 Jack Guy Iconoclast third ed New Orleans Louisiana Printing Co Ltd 1919 Scope and Content This collection consists of a one page letter written by Guy Jack and addressed to R H DeKay of Pontotoc Mississippi on October 9 1922 In the letter Jack discusses the popularity of his book Iconoclast He mentions that the price is 1 00 and that there are only 100 copies left of the third edition He reveals that it was always his goal for Iconoclast to have the largest circulation of any book ever written by a Mississippian He also discusses the possibility of a fourth edition including chapters on Mob violence Shyster lawyers Kemper County Mississippi Jew Bank Presidents Murder Arson Robbery of Life and Fire insurance companies in addition to the Dramatic trial and acquittal of Capt Jack of charges of criminal libel The letter includes a declaration that he has made and lost fortunes but finds himself happier in poverty Guy Jack ends the missive wishing Mr

  • Jackson (Alexander Melvorne) Papers, 1846-1892
    Jackson and J D Crutcher various correspondents and Charles Robards and an interesting 1852 letter from Arkansas Congressman Robert W Johnson to Jacob Thompson concerning the possible appointment of Thompson to a presidential cabinet post Besides family and personal correspondence the collection contains a variety of financial legal military and New Mexico Territorial records The financial records include those relating to the George B Hollamon bankruptcy 1868 1872 the Regensberger and Company bankruptcy 1876 1877 a cash book of McCreery and Robertson Merchants 1881 1882 Confederate war tax receipts and exchange certificates and various other financial documents and records Most of the legal records are land deeds grants indentures and transfers 1859 1887 for land in Pontotoc Mississippi Austin Texas Waco Texas and various other areas in Texas The military records include four letters 1861 1863 to Alexander Jackson and two letters 1862 to Charles Robards dealing primarily with the Arizona campaign of the Civil War There are also six letters dated in March 1868 between General U S Grant General J J Reynolds and Acting Assistant Adjunct General Nathaniel Burbank regarding a military escort for a group of miners traveling in Texas The New Mexico Territorial records are all financial and consist of statements of accounts ledgers and fee records of the territory for the period 1858 1861 Finally the collection contains more than sixty photographs of Jackson family members friends and scenes from the Austin Texas area The photographs date between the early 1860
