  • Jackson Freedom House Civil Rights Photograph, 1964
    in the summer of 1964 The integrated cast performed for free in front of unsegregated audiences when possible across the South Tom Wahman was also from New York While in Mississippi he served as the Assistant Director of Freedom Schools Wahman along with Ralph Featherstone worked in the office of the Council of Federated Organizations COFO which was located in the Jackson Freedom House at 1017 Lynch Street Jackson Mississippi Ralph Featherstone was the SNCC Program Director in the summer of 1964 He presided over the Freedom Force the teaching group of Freedom Summer He also participated in door to door voter registration in Mississippi Alabama and Georgia Featherstone had graduated from Washington D C Teacher s College a year earlier Until June of 1964 he had worked as a speech therapist in the District School System Featherstone also managed a bookstore called the Drum and Spear bookstore in D C He arrived in Philadelphia Mississippi the same week that Civil Rights workers Andrew Goodman James Chaney and Michael Schwerner disappeared In 1966 he was a SNCC Central Committee member and privy to all the closed meetings of the group He worked with SNCC through three chairmen and developed a close friendship with H Rap Brown Featherstone was killed on March 9 1970 in a car bomb attack possibly intended for Brown He and William Payne were entering Bel Air Maryland in the car that Brown often used They were supposed to prepare a safe way for Brown to enter the town as he was being tried there for arson and inciting a riot Police detectives determined that the bomb was under the right front seat Both men were instantly killed Featherstone was buried in Washington D C Sources Contents of the Collection Mississippi Department of Archives and History Sovereignty

    the Spanish assumed rule following the withdrawal of the British After holding office Johnson relocated to Troy Plantation near St Francisville Louisiana The Spanish census of 1792 lists his address as Second and Sandy Creek He died in 1805 Interestingly his grandson also named Isaac Johnson served as governor of Louisiana Samuel Brookes or Brooks was a magistrate in the Mississippi Territory Thomas Patterson along with his brother Edward owned large tracts of property in Adams County Mississippi Territory near Fairchild Creek which formed the county s northeastern border with Jefferson County According to the Spanish census of 1792 their grandfather was Robert Abrams who resided at Sandy and Second Creek Sources Gillis Norman E Early Inhabitants of the Natchez District Baton Rouge Louisiana 1963 McBee May Wilson Natchez Court Records Baltimore Genealogical Publishing Co 1979 Scope and Content Note This document is the sworn affidavit of Isaac Johnson as recorded by Samuel Brookes The central issue is ownership of a female slave named Jin or Jane Isaac Johnson gave a deposition stating that his neighbor Robert Abrams had claimed that the woman was the property of his grandson Thomas Patterson The affidavit is signed by Isaac Johnson in the

    Ole Miss student body He was later awarded the highest student honor when he was selected for membership in the Ole Miss Hall of Fame On February 8 1941 Paul Johnson Jr married Dorothy E Power daughter of Mr and Mrs Shelby R Power of Red Banks Mississippi Paul and Dorothy better known as Dot met during the 1930s while students at Ole Miss Since Paul s father had been inaugurated as governor the previous year the couple were married in the west parlor of the governor s mansion Four children were born to Paul and Dot Johnson Patricia Power Johnson Rebecca Reynolds Johnson who died as a child Paul B Johnson III and Shelby Venable Johnson Paul joined the U S Marine Corps shortly after the December 7 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor He trained at Quantico Virginia was later assigned to a west coast base and served in combat in the South Pacific where he rose through the ranks from Private to Captain After the war he achieved the rank of Major in the Marine Corps Inactive Reserve He was a member of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and in 1949 he was presented with the Distinguished Service Award from the American Veterans of World War II by National Commander Harold Russell Following his military service Johnson moved his law practice to Hattiesburg and from 1948 1951 he served as Assistant U S Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi Besides his law practice he established several other businesses in the Forrest County Mississippi area including Gulfway Construction Corporation and Gulfway Truck Stop In addition he and Dot were active in the civic affairs of Hattiesburg and were members of Parkway Heights Methodist Church Mr Johnson was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose a Thirty Second Degree Mason and a Shriner Mr Johnson made his first race for governor in 1947 Defeated in this campaign as well as campaigns in 1951 and 1955 he decided to run for lieutenant governor in 1959 and was elected in the first primary As lieutenant governor he helped develop and execute plans for industrial progress in the state through his leadership on the Agricultural and Industrial Board and in the Senate He also oversaw an active building program at the state s educational institutions Lieutenant Governor Johnson filled in for Governor Ross Barnett at Ole Miss when in 1962 federal marshals escorted James Meredith an African American to insure his safety as he enrolled at the historically white institution On that occasion Johnson physically blocked federal authorities who were attempting to get Meredith through the cordon of men resisting his entrance Meredith was ultimately enrolled at the school but this act of resistance generated the campaign slogan Stand Tall With Paul and helped to secure the governorship for Johnson in the 1963 election Paul B Johnson Jr was inaugurated as the fifty fourth governor of Mississippi on January 21 1964 and his term marked
