  • Mack (Will) Hanging Photographs, 1909
    of the Peace that the prisoner was wanted in Rankin County for assaulting Mamie Myers On May 19 1909 Rankin County Sheriff Walter White received a letter from Johnson informing him of Will Mack s arrest and Mack was transferred to Rankin County where he stood trial for the assault of Mamie Myers At approximately 3 30 p m on June 21 1909 Will Mack s trial began in Brandon Mississippi At 6 32 p m Judge J R Byrd dismissed the jurors to deliberate and at 6 45 p m the jurors returned to read their decision They found Mack guilty as charged and he was sentenced to hang by the neck until dead at the appointed time on July 23 1909 He spent the next 31 days at the Warren County jail in Vicksburg awaiting his inevitable moment on the gallows On July 22 1909 Sheriff White removed Mack from the Warren County jail and transported him back to Brandon arriving at the depot around midnight Shortly after noon on July 23 he was escorted to the gallows Reverend Adam Lewis an African American Baptist preacher from Brandon joined Mack on the platform to offer a short prayer and a final farewell and then left the scaffold At 12 42 p m with hands tied behind his back shoes removed black hood over his head and noose around his neck Rankin County Sheriff Walter White pulled the lever releasing the trap door beneath Will Mack At 12 58 p m local physician A G McLaurin pronounced Mack dead Sources Contents of the Collection Kight Lawrence Edward 1997 Mississippi Justice The Trial and Execution of Will Mack Masters Thesis University of Southern Mississippi Scope and Content Note The collection consists of two 8x10 black white photographs of the public

  • Major-Sowers Saw Mill Photographs, 1923, 1928-1929
    saw mill camp was located just off the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad line in Perry County between Petal and Richton In April 1922 Major Sowers moved its entire saw mill operation to Tallahala The Tallahala site included a Filer Stowell single circular type saw with an 8 foot horizontal band resaw The mill was capable of producing about 80 000 feet of lumber per day The Tallahala mill closed on January 31 1929 By the time the company bought the Tallahala property William Sowers had moved to New Orleans where he died in 1936 Louis Major remained in the Hattiesburg area until his death in 1941 Scope and Content This collection of photographs from the Major Sowers Saw Mill Company includes 20 images of company sites in Epley Lamar County and Tallahala Perry County These black and white photographs illustrate many facets of a saw mill company from the logs coming out of the forests via steam locomotives to stacking the finished product in the mill s storage shed An aerial view of the Tallahala operation and a panoramic photograph of the Epley location demonstrate that the saw mill town was a thriving and well planned community Streets were designed and laid out with thought to mill access by the railroad and from company housing which was always in sight of the mill In addition the Major Sowers Saw Mill Company had its national claim to fame Ten of the photographs in this collection record the export of lumber from the Tallahala site for decking that was used to refurbish the USS Constitution better known as Old Ironsides This collection is valuable to researchers of various topics including the lumber industry in the state and the life and times of a saw mill town Photographs of the steam locomotives used at the Tallahala site will be of interest to students of early railroading in Mississippi Photograph Log M292 1 Heisler Locomotive 3 X 5 B W July 1928 A 50 ton Heisler locomotive pulling flat cars loaded with logs to replace decking on Old Ironsides M292 2 Locomotive Pulling Flat Cars 3 X 5 B W July 1928 Log train with timber to replace decking on Old Ironsides M292 3 Timber Train 3 X 5 B W July 1928 Log train with timber to replace decking on Old Ironsides M292 4 Logs on Flat Cars 3 X 5 B W July 1928 Flat cars loaded with logs to replace decking on Old Ironsides M292 5 Log Train 3 X 5 B W July 1928 Close up of flat cars loaded with logs to replace decking on Old Ironsides M292 6 Timber Stack 3 X 5 B W July 1928 Stack of timber to be used for decking on Old Ironsides M292 7 Timber for Decking 3 X 5 B W July 1928 Stack of timber to be used for decking on Old Ironsides M292 8 Logs on Flat Car 3 X 5 B W July 1928 Rear view of

  • Mantinband (Rabbi Charles) Papers, 1931-1997

  • Marx (Charles A.) Papers, 1939-1997
    Carroll Counties Marx s career with the Highway Patrol spanned two decades and included Mississippi s turbulent civil rights struggle In 1961 he was among those who escorted the first bus load of Freedom Riders into Mississippi from the Alabama border to Jackson In 1962 he was promoted to Administrative Assistant to Public Safety Commissioner Col T B Birdsong He attended Jackson School of Law at night graduating in 1964 He was admitted to the bar in September of that year whereupon Col Birdsong appointed him legal officer for the Highway Patrol in addition to his other duties Also in 1964 he helped draft legislation giving the governor authority to delegate full police power to the Highway Patrol for a period of 90 days Marx served as legal officer administrative assistant until 1972 when Commissioner W O Dillard named him full time attorney for the Highway Patrol a position he held until his retirement in 1976 While serving with the Patrol he completed a Master s degree in criminal justice at The University of Southern Mississippi a Master s in education at Mississippi College and took advanced legal courses at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio As a highway patrolman Marx faced numerous stressful situations but the most traumatic was probably an incident that began with the arrest of two brothers for drunk driving and public drunkenness in 1961 The encounter occurred at or near Tchula Mississippi in Holmes County The two men did not resist arrest and were not considered dangerous so they were placed unrestrained in the back seat of Marx s patrol car He then proceeded toward the Holmes County Jail at highway speed 65 mph The two men suddenly attacked Marx from behind and in the ensuing struggle Marx was able to get his gun and fire several shots The car finally came to rest in a ditch beside the road and Marx discovered that both men had been wounded One later died on the operating table at a hospital in Lexington Mississippi The other survived Following his retirement from the Highway Patrol in 1976 Marx joined the faculty of The University of Southern Mississippi as an assistant professor of criminal justice Prior to becoming a full time faculty member he had taught law enforcement classes at USM s Jackson campus on a part time basis In 1978 he was the recipient of USM s Excellence in Teaching Award In 1980 Marx left USM to become Executive Assistant Attorney General of Mississippi under Attorney General William A Bill Allain During his tenure in the attorney general s office he enrolled in The University of Mississippi s doctoral program in education earning his Ph D in 1983 When Bill Allain was sworn in as governor of Mississippi in January 1984 he named Marx as his Executive Assistant and in February 1985 Governor Allain appointed him Chairman of the State Tax Commission to complete the unfulfilled term of A C Butch Lambert who had died in office
