  • McNeely (Lewis) Letter, 1849
    the congregation has been known as the First Presbyterian Church of Water Valley Mississippi Centre Church also in Yaloabusha County was formed by 1848 but no specific pastor s name was associated with the organization of this congregation Both Centre and O Tuckalofa Water Valley were occasionally served by supply pastors that had been newly licensed and or released from other presbyteries O Tuckalofa and Centre churches were associated with the Presbyterian Church in the United States which is structured by regional units called presbyteries Both churches belonged to the presbytery known successively as Tombigbee ca 1829 1830 Tombeckbee 1830 s Chickasaw 1843 and North Mississippi 1856 No biographical information has been located on Lewis McNeely the author of this letter Eli Field Cooley to whom the letter is addressed may be Eli Field Cooley whose works are listed in the Pre 1956 Imprints Scope and Content One autograph letter dated March 10 1849 containing Lewis McNeely s request to Rev Eli F Cooley in Trenton New Jersey for release from the New Brunswick New Jersey Presbytery in order to preach to the congregations of Otockaloffa i e Water Valley and Centre McNeely requested in the letter postmarked at Water

  • McNutt (Alexander G.) Letters, 1838, 1840
    opened a law office and also worked for a retired merchant collecting accounts He became partners with a planter Joel S Cameron who was murdered in 1833 by his slaves McNutt subsequently married Cameron s widow Elizabeth Lewis Cameron McNutt s political career began in 1835 when he was elected to the state Senate His greatest cause was reforming the banking system in Mississippi In 1837 he was elected president of the Senate and as president signed the bill that established the Union Bank During McNutt s term of office which began in 1838 he continued his reform plans Unfortunately the Union Bank failed causing the collapse of Mississippi banks and leaving the state with a five million dollar debt McNutt retired from political life for a few years after his second term as governor ended in 1842 then in 1847 he waged an unsuccessful campaign for United States Senator against his lifelong nemesis Henry S Foote In 1848 McNutt again campaigned state wide to become a presidential elector While at Cockrum s Crossroads in Desoto County he became ill and died on October 22 1848 Scope and Content This collection contains three original signed letters from Governor Alexander G

  • McNutt (Opie Lee) World War II Collection, 1943-1949
    the Arno River In July the 349th along with the rest of 88th Division saw fighting around Volterra Italy supporting the IV Corps drive on Legnano and to the Arno Later that month from 20 25 July McNutt s unit saw further heavy fighting clearing the region below the Arno The division along with all of II Corps to which it was now assigned fought in the drive on Imola McNutt s regiment fought around Castel Del Rio in late September and early October Opie Lee McNutt was killed in action on Oct 10 1944 as his regiment and division fought in the third phase of II Corps attack on the Livergnano escarpment toward Monghidoro in the drive on Bologna Sources Aegis Consulting Group for the 88th Infantry Division Association 88th Infantry Division Association http www 88infdiv org accessed October 13 2004 Fisher Ernest F Jr Cassino to the Alps United States Army in World War II The Mediterranean Theater of Operations Washington DC Center of Military History 1977 351 74 Sloan John Brown Draftee Division the 88th Infantry Division in World War II Lexington University of Kentucky Press 1986 Stanton Shelby Order of Battle U S Army World War II Novato CA Presidio Press 1984 Waters C W History of the 349th Infantry Regiment 88th Infantry Division April 1944 to May 1945 Kensington MD 88th Infantry Division Association 1973 Scope and Content The collection consists mostly of letters from Opie Lee McNutt to his sisters mother and father Also present in the collection are documents related to McNutt s death in combat his life insurance benefits letters of condolences to his family three letters from other relatives friends or acquaintances in the U S Army and one photograph Letters to McNutt s family span his time in basic training shipment to a replacement depot for overseas service and service with the 349th Infantry Regiment 88th Infantry Division in Italy June October 1944 McNutt seems to have devoted equal time to writing to his father mother and two sisters Vaudean and Virginia McNutt later Virginia Taylor Approximately one fifth of the letters are V Mail prints the remainder are ink or pencil on writing paper Though McNutt does not discuss operational issues or make specific mention of his experiences in combat the letters are still of considerable research value They provide a window into a soldier s perception of his conditions in the field and his thoughts about home family and other concerns during the campaign in Italy The collection is arranged in four brief series Series I contains letters written from McNutt to his mother father and sisters while in basic training and in replacement depots in the U S Series II consists of letters written from McNutt to his mother father and sisters while serving overseas in the 349th Infantry Regiment 88th Division in central and northern Italy Series III contains documents related to McNutt s death and application for and payment of various survivors benefits Series IV

  • Meridian Light and Railway Company Minute Book, 1901-1910
    to abolish the trolley system in favor of busses On April 16 of the same year the Meridian Light and Railway company was purchased by the Mississippi Power Company in an effort by that company to acquire existing utilities in Mississippi and unify them into a single network Scope and Content This collection consists of a one volume four hundred page Secretary s Record book detailing the minutes of the Meridian Light and Railway Company from February 18 1901 to July 18 1910 Written chronologically the book follows a standard format of providing the date each meeting was held in the top right hand corner the members who attended the meetings and the resolutions adopted The meetings took place annually or by special request of the company president and were held in two primary places the Southern Hotel in Meridian and the City National Bank in Mobile Alabama the office of William H Armbrecht a member of the board of directors The text is handwritten in ink and is quite legible The minutes focus on the business activities of the company and topics of discussion include matters related to the distribution of bonds several mortgages contracted with the Mississippi Valley Trust Company and the purchase of the Meridian Street Railway and Power Company p 80 A large portion of the book describes the acquisition of materials needed for construction and expansion namely land electric light and power plants furniture motors generators wire poles appliances and trolley related material Also included is a list of how the stockholders voted on various proposals and how the company s money was spent In addition to providing brief summaries of the company s business dealings the minute book serves as a general history of the Meridian Light and Railway Company A copy of the

    the united States Title 17 United States Code Collection Number M451 Accession Number AM90 15 Title Methodist History Materials Collection Dates Unknown Abstract Reverend John Buford Cain a Methodist historian wrote many publications including Methodism in the Mississippi Conference 1846 1870 The collection contains copies of pages from that book accompanied by handwritten notations on the history of Madison County Mississippi Biographical Historical Note Reverend John Buford Cain 1892 1984 was a lifelong Methodist historian who graduated with his MS in Church History from Emory University He collected historical materials related to the history of Methodism and authored many pamphlets books and other publications on the subject including The Cradle of Mississippi Methodism and Methodism in the Mississippi Conference 1846 1870 He was also a member of the Mississippi Conference Historical Society now the Mississippi Conference Commission on Archives and History and served as its Director of Historical Research from 1962 to 1983 Scope and Content Note The collection contains a set of photocopies of excerpts from John Buford Cain s book Methodism in the Mississippi Conference 1846 1870 and handwritten annotations on additional historical information about Madison County Mississippi Copies of the book are available in Special Collections call
