    piano concerto a symphony organ and piano pieces oratorios masses choral music opera chamber music military marches and others Henry H Paul was a lyricist and some of his works include Sweet Lillie The Forsaken Pit and Pat and I Thought He Was Jesting for Sure William Cunning W C Peters Mar 10 1805 Apr 20 1866 was born in Woodbury Devon and died in Cincinnati Ohio A composer clarinetist and music teacher he became an American music publisher after immigrating to the United States in 1820 He owned several publishing companies in Louisville Baltimore Cincinnati Pittsburg New York and St Louis His company s inventory included the works of such popular composers as Stephen Glover Henri Herz and Vincent Wallace Unfortunately the company lost it s entire stock of music and plates in a fire in 1866 W C Peters wrote Beautiful Kathleen I Love the Lighted Ball Room and I Thought He Was Jesting for Sure lyrics by Henry H Paul Thomas B Prendergast 1829 or 1830 1869 composed Bright Blue Eyes and the lyrics for The Negro s Departure or Dinah Broom Bonney Eloise The Belle of the Mohawk Vale written by Jack Rogers Thomas with lyricist G W Elliott was dedicated to Prendergast Henry Clay Preuss is the author of I Dream of My Darling So Sweetly to Night Dream No More Romance and lyricist of Star Spangled Flag of the Free F R Prohl wrote O Carry Me Back to the Land of My Birth or The Absent One s Request Henry Russell Dec 24 1812 Dec 8 1900 born in Sheerness was a composer He also performed as a concert singer in the United States in the 1830s and 1840s and served as the organist for the First Presbyterian Church in Rochester New York A few of his over eight hundred compositions are Woodman Spare that Tree Buffalo Gals Cheer Boys Cheer A Life on the Ocean Wave and The Gambler Music Publishers Publishing was vital to the sheet music industry and music publishing houses specialized in popular sheet music publications throughout the nineteenth century The summaries below are descriptions of some of the major publishing companies represented in this collection Bromberg Mayo and Werlein Mobile Alabama was the home of one of F Bromberg Son Music It was located on Dauphine Street and the company stamp is on Green s The Little Fish and Cornwall s The Little Voice Publishers located in New Orleans included P P Phillip Werlein Co and William T Mayo both of which were located on Camp Street Some sources suggest that Werlein and Mayo were in business together Lee Walker Julius Lee and William Walker both former employees of George Willig s publishing company established Lee Walker in 1848 in Philadelphia Pennsylavania After the deaths of both Lee and Walker the company s stock and publications were purchased by Ditson Co 1876 Hall Son A musical instrument apprentice General William Hall of Tarrytown New York started the William

  • Nolan (Philip) Marriage Certificate, 1799
    December 19 1799 by Justice of the Peace William Dunbar Nolan a Kentuckian associated with General James Wilkinson was killed by Spanish troops on March 26 1801 His life served as the inspiration for Edward Everett Hale s short novel The Man Without a Country Books Copies of Edward Everett Hale s The Man Without a Country are available in the Cook and McCain Libraries The Man Without a Country

  • North (Ralph) Letter, 1883
    a savings and loan institution chartered in 1852 He was appointed as a Mississippi Supreme Court Chancellor for the 12 th district in 1878 and 1882 and served as a circuit court judge from 1878 until approximately 1890 Sargent Prentiss Nutt who later changed his name to the old spelling Knut was born c 1854 one of the eleven children of Dr Haller and Julia Nutt Haller Nutt a Union sympathizer began the construction of Longwood in Natchez in 1860 Due to the outbreak of the Civil War the home was never completed Soon after Dr Nutt s death in 1864 Julia Nutt filed suit against the U S government in an attempt to recover some of the losses sustained during the war Sargent Prentiss educated in Philadelphia and at the University of Virginia studied law in Natchez and became an attorney By the time of this letter he had moved to Washington D C where he worked to recover the family fortune by preparing lawsuits against the Federal government The Nutt family eventually received approximately 200 000 from the Federal government Scope and Content A letter dated January 20 1883 from Ralph North in Natchez Mississippi to Sargent Prentiss

  • Nydegger Family Papers, 1905-1987
    Army Officers Reserve Corps He began training for the Quartermaster Corps by extension courses in Bryan Texas and entered active military service on April 10 1941 Following his transfer to active status Nydegger was ordered to the New Orleans Quartermaster Depot as assistant to the Commanding Officer then in May he was sent to Schuylkill Arsenal in Philadelphia Pennsylvania for additional training In mid October 1941 Nydegger was sent to the Quartermaster School at Camp Lee Virginia where he remained for 41 months serving as Instructor and Head of the Department of Supply Training He authored texts and publications on supply for the Quartermaster School and was later made Executive Officer Plans and Training Officer and Commander later made Executive Officer Plans and Training Officer and Commander of a quartermaster battalion During 1945 Nydegger spent time at Camp Shelby Mississippi Camp Gordon Georgia and Ft Bragg North Carolina He attended the School of Military Government in Washington D C in the fall of 1945 and was sent to Korea as a military supply officer for the army Nydegger returned to the United States in June 1946 and on August 7 of that year was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel Quartermaster Corps Following his return to the states and his discharge Nydegger was appointed to the faculty of Mississippi Southern College as Director of High School Correspondence and Assistant Professor in Extension On January 31 1947 he was appointed Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies based on his earlier efforts at the Allen Military Academy toward student exchanges with South American countries Nydegger s efforts resulted in success for the Institute enrollment increased from 30 the first year to over 400 before his death of a heart attack on January 29 1951 Melvin Nydegger was active in the Mississippi Modern Language Association serving as its president in 1948 he was also active in the Masons and the Reserve Officers Association and served as state commander of Military Order of the World Wars After his death his wife Donna continued her involvement with the Institute by serving as Chairman of Student Welfare until her retirement She was known as Mama by many of the Latin American students who benefitted from her efforts at making their transition to University and American culture as smooth as possible Scope and Content The Nydegger Family Papers 1905 1987 consist of the records of Melvin G Nydegger his wife Donna Eileen Smith and daughter Donna Dee The collection includes correspondence personal and biographical information photographs of Latin American Institute students and documents genealogy and memorabilia related to the Nydegger Smith and Meadows families Correspondence relating to Melvin Nydegger s military service and letters to his mother from 1940 through 1946 comprise the largest portion of the collection A limited number forms and records relate to the Latin American Institute its rules and regulations Three folders among the family papers contain school records correspondence and personal materials of Donna Eilene Smith Nydegger from
