    We answered a call for partners to organize an OpenCon 2014 satellite event in order to bring the energy of the in person event to those unable to attend the conference in Washington DC Southern Miss is an official satellite event partner and only one of two sites in the United States As with the main conference satellite events provide a place to conceptualize catalyze and launch initiatives advancing Open Access Open Data and Open Education We are going to have a difficult time deciding which OpenCon speaker our event will feature Notable figures such as Patrick Brown Professor of Biochemistry at Stanford University and co founder of the Public Library of Science and Martin Paul Eve Lecturer at University of Lincoln UK and co founder of The Open Library of Humanities are some of the lecturers at OpenCon 2014 said Englert OpenCon 2014 aims to build on the momentum that began during the events that took place during October s Open Access week Southern Miss OpenCon 2014 satellite event will feature a lecture recorded at the main OpenCon 2014 Conference and then an open discussion around the session s topics OpenCon 2014 is organized by the Right to Research

    I am excited about this opportunity to provide a professional development program to nanoscale and materials science researchers at Southern Miss that will cultivate their science communication and pubic engagement skills This program will expand upon existing University Libraries education outreach partnerships such as the Cook Library science café series By partnering with University Libraries the content expertise of the faculty researchers can be leveraged with the engagement expertise of University Libraries to deliver effective and rewarding informal educational outreach experiences to broader audiences said Englert Englert is one of seven chosen to participate in this workshop The workshop will provide information and resources on planning and hosting a Sharing Science Workshop Practicum SSW P for Southern Miss nanoscale and materials science researchers that will enhance their science communication skills engage their interest in education and outreach and prepare them for providing effective and rewarding outreach experiences Englert will also observe how the SSW P is implemented at the Museum of Science in Boston with graduate students from local research center partners such as MIT and Harvard She plans to implement an SSW P workshop at Southern Miss in early 2015 The NISE Network is a national community of researchers

    honoring the University s longstanding relationship with veterans and the military On behalf of the USM Center for Veterans Service Members and Families we are honored that our heritage is exhibited and featured in the Cook Library We appreciate Stephen Haller s initiative to showcase our Military Friendly university and the loyal and dedicated service of our Veterans and their Families As we approach Veterans Day 2014 it is my hope all Americans will pause to reflect on the many sacrifices made by those who served for the sake of freedom said General Jeff Hammond Special Advisor to the University President on Military Veteran Student Affairs The exhibit offers early historical images of veterans and the military at Mississippi Normal College State Teachers College Mississippi Southern College and The University of Southern Mississippi Special Collections also preserves archives books photographs memoirs and oral histories documenting conflicts throughout the University s history including some material pre dating the College e g the Civil War Veterans and their families in the South Mississippi region have donated many of these items and some additional material related to nearby Camp Shelby Additionally the exhibit highlights both the U S Army and U S Air Force ROTC programs as well as the University s new Center for Military Veterans Service Members and Families and the Chapter of Student Veterans Association The Dale Center for the Study of War and Society housed in the Department of History is also described and illustrated in the exhibit The University of Southern Mississippi is approaching 100 years of its relationship with veterans returning to civilian and college life as well as with active duty military personnel As part of this relationship Southern Miss has hosted Reserve Officers Training Cadet ROTC programs for the United States Army since the 1950s

    Policies RSS Feeds Student Employment Suggestions Library Research Assistance for Students One of the ways that University Libraries help students succeed is by offering workshops on research skills These workshops provide tips and techniques to identify find and evaluate information for assignments and projects Any student organization resident assistant hall director or even a study group can request a workshop The Cook Library instruction classroom LIB 110 can accommodate up to 26 students and the Gulf Coast Library classroom GLIB 213 can accommodate up to 22 students If you have a larger group or prefer a different location a reference librarian will come to you providing a session in a classroom building residence hall or other suitable location on campus Workshops may be scheduled 8 a m 9 p m Monday Thursday and 8 a m 5 p m Friday Requests for workshops outside these times will be considered on a case by case basis Please allow seven days advance notice for all workshop requests To request a workshop use the Libraries instruction request form and provide the name of your group where the form asks for course name and number Use the space provided on the form to describe
