    and Guides Policies RSS Feeds Student Employment Suggestions Special Collections Awarded Mississippi Library Association Public Relations Award Special Collections at McCain Library Archives received the Mississippi Library Association s Public Relations Award for Best Effort by an Individual Library to Publicize Library Services around a Single Theme or Event The award was given for the Item of the Month feature that Special Collections began producing in February 2007 Each month a librarian staff member or student selects an item letter book photograph etc which is researched scanned or photographed and then made accessible online The books manuscripts ephemera and realia featured as the Item of the Month can be found in the University Archives Historical Manuscripts de Grummond Children s Literature Collection Mississippiana and Rare Books which are all located in Special Collections Award winners were announced at the MLA Awards Brunch held on the final day of the MLA Annual Conference in Biloxi Mississippi on October 18 2013 Jennifer Brannock Curator of Rare Books and Mississippiana is the originator of the Item of the Month feature and accepted this award on behalf of Special Collections To learn more about the Item of the Month or to view previously featured

    perform one search across multiple databases simultaneously This new discovery service is called Primo and Southern Miss Libraries plan to launch Primo during summer 2014 Beginning on April 28 and continuing until the new discovery service is fully implemented the Quick Search tool on the Libraries home page will be redirected to the Libraries Classic Catalog During this transition period Quick Search will continue to retrieve records from the Libraries catalog exactly as it always has but the interface will look a little different and article search results will not be included Quick Search will continue to be an effective tool to find books journals media and other resources held in the Libraries collections You may still use Quick Search to look up call numbers for print materials and get links to e books e journals and other online resources Quick Search will still allow you to search by author title subject or keyword and your results will be as complete as ever only article search results will be temporarily unavailable using Quick Search To find articles we recommend you begin your search on the Article Database List or by using the Research Guides Throughout this transition period assistance will

    and Guides Policies RSS Feeds Student Employment Suggestions University Libraries Celebrates Preservation Week with Talk and Exhibit April 2014 In celebration of Preservation your library April 27 May 3 University Libraries is hosting a brown bag luncheon talk and an exhibit highlighting techniques to preserve personal family and library archival and book collections The exhibit will be on display in the exhibit cases in the lobby of Cook Library and will highlight supplies and techniques used to preserve and repair books and manuscripts in order to provide continued use of materials in the collections This exhibit will be available April 25 May 26 On April 30 Jennifer Brannock curator of Rare Books Mississippiana will provide a basic introduction to ideal environmental conditions and the preservation of books and archival materials paper photographs etc This is a great opportunity to learn about the basics of preserving personal book paper and photographic collections Attendees are encouraged to bring examples of items from their personal collections to discuss The one hour talk will start at 12 noon in Cook Library Room 123 Light refreshments will be served During Preservation Week an initiative of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services libraries all

    The award provides up to 1 000 in reimbursements for expenses to attend the 2014 ALA Conference in Las Vegas June 26 July 1 Azadbakht is one of seven librarians to receive this sponsorship At the conference Elena will participate in a breakfast to honor the recipients and there will be a special exhibit featuring the award winners on display in the registration area As part of the application process for the sponsorship librarians were asked to write an essay on the topic of how attending the conference will contribute to the librarians professional development I wanted the opportunity to interact with libraries from all over the country and to pursue professional development in a face to face setting I also hope to learn about new technologies and strategies that can enhance reference and public services said Azadbakht The ALA Annual Conference is one of the premier global library events held each year bringing together newsmakers innovators thought leaders and influencers in the library field from all over the world Important announcements are made updates are shared relevant legislation and policy are addressed and discussions take place that have a major impact on libraries their role and their ongoing transformation
