    Host Talk on the de Grummond Children s Literature Collection The University of Southern Mississippi Libraries will host a talk about the de Grummond Children s Literature Collection on Tuesday February 4 2014 at 5 30 p m in the Cook Library Art Gallery LIB 105A located next to Starbucks Special Collections at the University of Southern Mississippi preserves and makes accessible a number of significant collections relating to children s literature The de Grummond Collection one of North Americas leading research centers in the field of children s literature contains over 160 000 children s books and original manuscripts and illustrations of more than 1 300 authors and illustrators Ellen Ruffin curator of the de Grummond Collection will discuss some of the materials in the book collection as well as materials and artists that have been awarded the Caldecott Award an honor given to the year s best picture book This talk is the second of three presentations on collecting areas in Special Collections at Southern Miss The third will focus on the civil rights materials in the collection All events are sponsored by Special Collections and The Library of Hattiesburg Petal and Forrest County These talks are made

    fiction stories time travel continues to capture the public s interest But is it plausible or even possible There are two types of time travel travel forward in time and travel backward in time Join Dr Lawrence Mead for the first Science Café of the spring semester on Monday January 27 2014 in Cook Library Room 123 at 6 p m Dr Mead professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy will present the modern physicists view of time and try to provide a qualitative understanding of what time travel of both types really entails Such an understanding requires the laws of relativity both special and general and of quantum mechanics Using those principles various proposals for time travel will be examined and for each it will be shown how experiments either confirm or eliminate each one as a possibility Topics include the Twin Travelers Effect the CPT theorem and its consequences rotating black holes Einstein Rosen bridge worm holes in space the Grandfather paradox and Stephen Hawking s Chronology Protection Principle A Science Café s casual meeting place plain language and inclusive conversation create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for people whose primary background may not be science Each

    Suggestions University Libraries to Host Talk on Mississippi Timber Industry Collections The University of Southern Mississippi Libraries will host a talk about Mississippi s timber industry materials found in Special Collections on Tuesday January 21 2014 at 5 30 p m in the Cook Library Art Gallery LIB 105A located next to Starbucks Special Collections at the University of Southern Mississippi preserves and makes accessible a number of significant archival collections documenting the history of the region s timber industry Steve Haller the curator of historical manuscripts and archives at Southern Miss will provide a brief summary of selected timber industry collections highlighting three newly available collections In his talk Piney Woods and Pine Belts Archival Resources Document Mississippi s Timber Industry Haller will review the types of materials in the collection and showcase a number of original manuscripts and photographs in his presentation This talk is the first of three presentations on collecting areas in Special Collections at Southern Miss The following talks will focus on the children s literature collection and civil rights materials All events are sponsored by Special Collections and The Library of Hattiesburg Petal and Forrest County The talks are made possible by the Mississippi
