    from Dean Meador Smith The Friends of University Libraries invite members of the university and area communities to hear Historic Designation and the Meador Homestead on Thursday June 27 2013 Hattiesburg resident Dean Meador Smith will discuss her work to have her family s historic cabin built of hand hewn pine in 1884 declared historic designation She and husband Eddie Smith restored the log cabin in 2009 and opened Meador Homestead Bed and Breakfast in 2010 There Meador Smith also operates Simply TeaVine a popular tea room where she serves Southern delicacies and tea in a setting surrounded by camellias azaleas and pine trees Meador Smith will also discuss her cookbook Momma Dean s Southern Cooking at Meador Homestead and have copies to sell and sign The stories and historic photos in the cookbook are integral to the history of Mississippi s Piney Woods region For example Smith devotes a chapter to her Circuit Rider s Tea a nod to her great great grandfather Levi Meador a Methodist who traveled on horseback preaching to settlers and organizing congregations in rural areas The menu includes Preacher Man s Stew Hoecakes Grilled Apple and Cheese Sandwich and Heavenly Hash Cake Visit the

    service to The University of Southern Mississippi Throughout her career with University Libraries and due to her leadership in library technical services Branton made a significant impact on building and sustaining the integrity and quality of the library s online catalog She served in lead roles on three catalog system migrations introduced nationally recognized best practices in revisions of cataloging and acquisitions workflow and was a charter participant in the International Cataloging Online Resource Cooperative 2000 Southern Miss became the first Mississippi institution to participate in the Name Authority Cooperative Organization NACO due to Branton s leadership She initiated the first NACO Mississippi Funnel Group which included Delta State University and Mississippi Valley State University This NACO participation led to the Civil Rights Thesaurus to standardize names of Mississippians in bibliographic records In recognition of her contributions to Southern Miss and the library profession Branton received the Excellence in Librarianship Award 2005 Excellence in Professional Service Award 1995 American Library Association 3M New Members Round Table Outstanding Achievement Award 1993 the Mississippi Library Association MLA Past President s Award 1994 and the MLA Peggy May Award for teaching and mentoring of new librarians 2003 Branton served in many state leadership roles most significantly as president of Mississippi Library Association 2009 2010 and editor of Mississippi Libraries 2000 2002 A member of Beta Phi Mu the international library and information studies honor society since 1990 she was active in Beta Psi the state chapter from 1998 to 2005 and was secretary 1998 1999 and president 2004 2005 At Southern Miss she served as managing editor and production editor of The Southern Quarterly 2005 2013 secretary for the Council of Chairs 2009 2012 senator in Faculty Senate 2010 2013 including secretary 2012 2013 In addition she was an adjunct faculty member for

    Feeds Student Employment Suggestions University Libraries Supports Dr B s Book Club May 2013 To support and promote Dr B s Book Club the new summer book club started by Southern Miss Dr Rodney Bennett University Libraries has collaborated with University Communications to provide recommended readings for students who are participating The goal of Dr B s Book Club is to encourage students to stay engaged and read books over the summer that will contribute to student success and success in their chosen fields University Libraries has created an resource guide to give students suggestions for summer reading that will help enrich their college experience The guide highlights books on student success faculty publications and Mississippi writers among others The online guide also contains links to book reviews award winning books free e books and other helpful information to guide students in their summer reading selections Selected materials have also been placed on reserve at Cook Library for a 14 day check out period to accommodate student access Throughout the summer semester University Libraries will highlight Dean s Pick of the Week Each week one of the college deans will be featured along with their recommendation for student reading These
