    Talk The Friends of University Libraries invites you to join us for our annual membership meeting Thursday April 26 2012 The meeting will be held at St Thomas Catholic Church beginning at 6 30 p m Susan Haltom author of One Writer s Garden Eudora Welty s Home Place will be the guest speaker for the evening The annual membership meeting will include general information about The Friends of University Libraries along with annual reports of officers and committees Also recognition will be given to new officers and lifetime members The meeting is open to all current and prospective members Susan Haltom is a garden designer and preservation and maintenance coordinator of the Eudora Welty garden She has published in Mississippi Magazine Old House Journal and Magnolia the journal of the Southern Garden Society One Writer s Garden is the story of an iconic American writer and her relationship with her garden The story begins during the first boom in American home gardening and unfolds against the most extraordinary events of the early twentieth century The book is richly illustrated with never published archival images and stunning new color photographs of the restored Welty garden For more information on becoming

    held on April 20 2012 from 10 a m to noon in Gonzales Auditorium LAB 108 and is open to everyone in the university community The forum Academic Publishing Changes and Challenges will feature a brief overview of recent trends from Dr Carole Kiehl Dean of University Libraries followed by an expert panel discussion The panel members represent a broad range of disciplines at the university These faculty are actively involved in writing and editorial duties for scholarly publications Parthapratim Biswas Physics Fengwei Bai Biological Sciences Andrew Haley History Vafa Kamali Research Bikramjit Banerjee Computing Science and David P Daves Curriculum Instruction and Special Education The Q A session will be moderated by Associate Dean for Library Collections Scholarly Communications Corrie Marsh There are a variety of academic concerns surrounding new models for publishing says Dr Gordon Cannon Associate Vice President for Research For example many new open scholarly scientific journals now require expensive author fees and some granting agencies require archival preservation of research data This forum will initiate future campus discussions about how to address these challenges Ms Marsh describes Dr Cannon s influence We are very excited and inspired by Dr Cannon s encouragement to open a
