  • The United States Merchant Marine Academy and American Merchant Marine Museum Added to National Register of Historic Places | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    the U S Merchant Marine Academy campus was designed by Henry Otis Chapman in a Beaux Arts version of French Renaissance style with landscaping by Charles Leavitt The house was sold to car magnate Walter P Chrysler in 1923 as a summer home The original Chrysler estate included twelve acres 450 feet of water frontage a formal rose garden on the south side of the residence sunken garden in front of the portico an outdoor swimming pool and an indoor swimming In 1942 the building was acquired by the U S Government for 100 000 and was dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on September 30 1943 In the early months after the USMMA opened its doors the rooms of the mansion were used for classes and dormitory space It now serves as the Academy s main administration building Barstow House is the site of the American Merchant Marine Museum The house once home to William Slocum Barstow has twenty rooms and furnishings that include an Aeolian pipe organ a mechanism for listening to player piano rolls There are also hand cut walnut paneling and old European cut glass chandeliers The ceiling in the main living room is ornately decorated by Florentine styled painting on both main and cross beams all done by Italian artists There is a wine cellar a taproom and a basement theater with a projection room The design of the house was influenced by elements of sixteenth century Lombard and Tuscan architecture which can be seen in the plain stuccoed and ochre colored surfaces of the main three story central block the shallow attic windows beneath the tiled roof and the arched openings with projected balconies supported by prominent brackets Built in 1929 the re design of the house is credited to the architect Greville Rickard

  • USMMA Celebrates 71st Birthday | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    Marine Academy USMMA took time to celebrate the Academy s 71 st birthday by sharing a birthday cake Rear Admiral James A Helis Superintendent Rear Admiral Susan Dunlap Deputy Superintendent and Captain Jim Tobin President of the United States Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Foundation joined the Regiment of Midshipmen in recalling the history of the Academy Regimental Commander Midshipman Nicholas Harvey spoke of the rich history of the Academy which was dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on this date in 1943 The Academy serves the Merchant Marine as West Point serves the Army and Annapolis serves the Navy said Roosevelt upon dedication During the lunchtime ceremony in Delano Hall Rear Admiral Helis had the honor of cutting the cake The first piece was given to Captain Tobin who represented all Kings Point Alumni The second piece was given to the oldest midshipman present First Classman Mario Maddox born in 1986 Midshipman Maddox then shared it with youngest midshipman Plebe Chase Tyner Hinkle born in 1997 The U S Merchant Marine Academy located in Kings Point N Y educates and graduates merchant mariners and leaders of exemplary character who will serve America s maritime transportation and defense needs in peace

  • U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Observes Patriot Day | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    LCDR Jerry Durham opened with a prayer For those who lost their lives on board flight 93 We remember For those who lost their lives at the Pentagon We remember For those who lost their lives just a few miles away from here at the World Trade Center We remember said Durham I am honored to stand here today with men and women who stand ready respond to the call of the American people I ask now God for a special measure of grace and comfort for those families who s loved ones were tragically lost Be with them today as they gather to remember and assure them that we stand with them in their grief and feel a measure of their loss Afterward Academy Superintendent Rear Admiral James A Helis addressed the faculty staff and Regiment of Midshipmen He recalled the tremendous response by over 150 midshipmen and midshipmen EMTS who joined by Academy faculty staff mobilized to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts Over the course of nine days USMMA assets moved in excess of 1 500 firefighters EMT s police officers and other rescue personnel and moved several tons of food water rescue supplies and materiel from locations in Brooklyn and New Jersey to the landing area at North Cove He then spoke of the contributions of Kings Pointers in the thirteen years of war that followed the attacks and of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation since 9 11 He charged the Midshipmen to ask themselves what they do each day to prepare themselves for the challenges they will face when they are called to serve the nation in its time of need Then Admiral Helis and the Academy s youngest Plebe Chase Hinkle laid a wreath at the War Memorial The

    Merchant Marine Academy s USMMA upcoming Blood Drive to benefit Long Island Blood Services USMMA hosts three blood drives during each Academic Year and this blood drive takes on critical importance Karen Muscolino Director of Donor Recruitment for the Long Island Blood Services has indicated that they are in a donation appeal status of RED ALERT Supplies of blood especially type O negative are at critically low levels for this time of year and donations are greatly sought and appreciated Each donation has the potential to save three lives When Monday August 18 2014 Where U S Merchant Marine Academy 300 Steamboat Road Kings Point New York Land Hall Time 6 00 to 10 00 pm Open to the public who meet the following eligibility criteria ID with signature and photo Minimum weight 110 lbs Age 16 75 16 year olds must present written permission from a parent Individuals 76 and over must present a doctor s note Must be well hydrated and have eaten a low fat meal No tattoos for past 12 months Please note Certain donors who have travelled internationally within the last year may not be eligible to donate This will be determined at the time

  • Midshipmen Demonstrate “Acta non Verba” in Costa Rica | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    being able to see my family very much this year but I am glad that I chose to volunteer said Demet Volunteering with kids at an orphanage did more for me than I could ever do for them Rear Admiral James A Helis Superintendent said We are very proud of these midshipmen Consistent with the Academy motto Acta Non Verba translated Deeds not Words they have demonstrated their commitment to serving others The volunteer trip which was organized by Midshipman Nadeem Shariff and coordinated by the commandant s staff was financed by the Midshipmen Morale Fund The group s goal was to help others while gaining skills that make them better leaders and better global citizens I really enjoyed my time in Cost Rica said Midshipman Jennifer Jimenez 16 I got to interact with women my age who spend so much of their time teaching students with disabilities essential life skills I m glad I was able to learn the culture and I was humbled by the experience The midshipmen spent their first week in Cartago working at the largest special education school in the country Five of the midshipman spent their days helping teachers with lessons and activities for students with physical and learning challenges Midshipman Darin Zacharias 17 helped teachers manage the students by changing and feeding them and supervising them in the playground While some midshipmen assisted the teachers the others cleaned the playground and repainted the school They spent their second week volunteering at a large orphanage that housed 128 children from birth to age 18 Five of the midshipmen along with a few other volunteers set up activities that allowed the children to interact with each other and learn new things Midshipman Alec Dinh 16 played soccer and basketball with the children The rest of
