    assured them that the revised Academic calendar would allow the First Class to obtain their United States Coast Guard licenses and graduate as previously scheduled USMMA is one of our nation s five federal service Academies but it is the only one operated by civilian faculty and staff a majority of whom were furloughed during the shutdown While the other service academies were able to remain open USMMA was forced to postpone classes In order to minimize the impact on midshipmen the Academy Administration decided to move up fall break to coincide with the shutdown First Class President Midshipmen Ryan Raffo said The Class of 2014 is excited that license testing and graduation will not be affected by the shutdown It is great being back at the academy and staying on track for graduation scheduled for June 21st 2014 Academic Dean Dr Shashi Kumar PhD expressed his thanks to the faculty saying We are very grateful to all involved including the faculty union for working together and revising our academic calendar This will go a long way toward helping our midshipmen succeed Thank you The U S Merchant Marine Academy located in Kings Point N Y educates and graduates merchant

  • The United States Merchant Marine Academy Celebrates 70 Years | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    Paul Jaenichen and Superintendent James A Helis Ph D were there to welcome home alumni and their families and to honor the memories of those lost One of the highlights of the weekend was seeing 16 members of the class of 1943 in formation on the on the 50 yard line behind the USMMA Regimental Color Guard as they carried the Battle Standard In the Academy s first graduating class 1 164 midshipmen graduated but 142 midshipmen were killed during their sea year training period The Regimental Battle Standard which is always carried by the Regimental Color Guard honors these 142 undergraduates who laid down their lives for their country Another highlight of the weekend was when the Academy community rendered honors to four of the female graduates of the class of 1978 Francis Yates Terry Olsen Preston Ivy Barton Suter and Nancy Wagner USMMA s Class of 1978 was the first class from any service Academy to include female graduates These women are great examples of what it is to be a Kings Pointer said Helis They have dedicated their lives to service and leadership They have served this nation as Merchant Marine Officers as Navy Officers and as

    of national defense or emergency The Strategic Sealift Officer Program provides the capability for emergency crewing and shore side support of Military Sealift Command s Surge Sealift Fleet and the Ready Reserve Force in times of national defense or emergency It is the policy of the United States that merchant marine vessels of the United States should be operated by highly trained and efficient citizens of the United States and that the United States Navy and the merchant marine of the United States should work closely together to promote the maximum integration of the total seapower forces of the United States 46 USC 511 How do you serve in the Navy as a Strategic Sealift Officer Strategic Sealift Officers serve in the Navy either through the Selected Reserves SELRES or through the Strategic Sealift Readiness Group SSRG While on orders the SSO will provide subject matter expertise in marine engineering operations and logistics The majority of SSOs are in the Individual Ready Reserve IRR where they maintain a civilian career in the maritime industry and complete a minimum 2 week Active Duty Training ADT period annually Opportunities for long term support are available The Strategic Sealift Officer Program s primary supported command is Military Sealift Command MSC As the primary supported command of SSOP Officers MSC has been designated as the flag sponsor of the Strategic Sealift Officer Program As such MSC supervises the care development and employment of the SSOP community in an effort to optimize the benefits provided by your education and civilian career Typical ADTs will utilize the SSO s skill set afloat in shipyards and in ports The Strategic Sealift Officer Program SSOP supports the national defense sealift requirement and capabilities as executed by Military Sealift Command The SSOP provides naval reserve officers who are licensed

    fighters to EA 6B radar jammers and E 2C early warning command and control aircraft Amphibious Ships LHA LHD LPD LSD carry up to 2 000 Marines and their equipment vehicles and supplies The Amphibious Assault subtype or LHA s and LHD s double as small aircraft carriers that are home to various kinds of helicopters and the Harrier vertical take off and landing jet fighter The LHA s LHD s and LSD s all carry modern high speed Landing Craft Air Cushion LCAC to ferry Marines and their gear ashore Minesweepers MCM detect and clear naval mines from areas in which other ships soon will be operating Patrol Craft PC small speedy ships that patrol coastlines as well as insert and support SEAL special operations forces ashore Littoral Combat Ship LCS The Littoral Combat Ship LCS is designed to defeat growing littoral threats and provide access and dominance in the coastal water battlespace A fast maneuverable and networked surface combatant LCS provides the required warfighting capabilities and operational flexibility to execute focused missions close to the shore such as mine warfare anti submarine warfare and surface warfare C What Will Be My Role as a SWO As a junior SWO you will lead a division of sailors aboard one of the above listed types of ships A division is made up of work centers responsible for a certain component of your ship such as specific electronics weapons or engineering system Immediately after graduating from college in the NROTC Program you will report to your first ship as a Division Officer Division Officer tours are 42 month split tours designed to provide individuals as much diversity as is possible in their background and experiences The first tour will be 24 months The most important milestones of this initial sea tour are completing the Officer of the Deck Fleet and Surface Warfare Officer qualifications These qualifications are designed to be completed within the first 12 to 18 months After learning the basics of shipboard life and attaining your Officer of the Deck qualification you will complete a month long training course at the Surface Warfare Officers School Command SWOSCOLOM Newport Rhode Island You will be assigned a wardroom of other junior officers from diverse ship and billet assignments By participating in seminars exercises and simulators you will learn from each other s experiences and broaden your Surface Warfare knowledge Upon returning to your ship you will be ready to complete your SWO qualifications and earn your Surface Warfare Officer Pin During the initial sea tour officers may be assigned to multiple departments to provide a diversified background and facilitate Surface Warfare Officer SWO and Engineering Officer of the Watch EOOW qualification Development of seamanship war fighting skills and effective leadership are key elements in this first tour The second Division Officer tour lasts 18 months It will always be in a department different from the initial tour During the second tour Division Officers are expected to complete Engineering Officer of the
