    Library Faculty Office of the Academic Dean Director of Academic Center for Excellence Humanities Faculty Marine Engineering Facuty Marine Transportation Faculty Mathematics and Science Faculty Graduate Program Learning Resources Overview Tutoring Program Instructional Technology ACE Overview of Learning Resources Since its inception in the 1940 s the United States Merchant Marine Academy has fostered a tradition of balancing a theoretical education in the classroom with practical hands on training in labs and at sea In the 1950 s and 1960 s classroom instruction was delivered through books and blackboards supplemented by practical scientific and mechanical laboratory sessions Midshipmen got their hands dirty cutting threads on a lathe breaking down a pump or splicing lines ropes for the land lubbers However as the merchant marine and transportation industry became more technologically complex so too has the Academy adapted to the changing needs of teaching and learning Much of the traditional hand on lab work still takes place But today s midshipmen are also spending time training on state of the art full mission and part task computerized simulators Faculty deliver technology rich lectures in modern electronic classrooms Wireless technologies web based instruction and distance learning will soon be commonplace throughout campus

    who are experiencing academic difficulty and to apply the support systems described above to specific cases The academic officers work closely with the assistant and associate deans Each plebe is assigned a faculty advisor who is available through appointment to discuss a broad range of academic problems with a student Tutoring Program Program Overview The Academy Tutoring System provides individual and group tutorial assistance to Midshipmen who request the service or the require support do to identified academic deficiency Inquiries should be made to the Director Academic Center for Excellence Services are provided by Midshipman peer tutors and professional tutors The tutoring system also promotes the usage of instructor office hours as the initial intervention strategy Professional Tutoring Program The ACE provides several professional tutors for students The plebe core courses are generally subjects for which professional tutors are available and they include courses in Calculus Physics and Chemistry There are English tutors that come in each week and are available to assist any student with their language skills A professional tutoring schedule for the trimester is made available to all students and Mentors Email reminders about the time and location of tutoring are sent out every weekly and are posted for the professional tutoring sessions reflecting the week ahead Midshipmen that need help in these courses are encouraged to attend these sessions Peer Tutoring Program Peer Tutors are available to all midshipmen enrolled at the Academy The Midshipman Peer Tutoring Program is run out of the Academic Center for Excellence Each term students can sign up with the Regimental Academic Officer RAO to be a peer tutor There is a midshipman academic officer in each company who is specifically responsible to work with students who are experiencing academic difficulty and to apply the support systems described above to specific

    The basic configuration for an e classroom includes a dedicated lectern computer digital document camera and a LCD digital projector More advanced classrooms include wireless access and a DVD VCR projector Some lecture halls include power and network jacks at each seat allowing midshipmen to bring their laptops directly to class In the image above Mr David Sanborn 73 a visiting lecturer showcases the versatility of the electronic classroom in Bowditch room 317 The Power Point presentation is being run off a laptop computer and the Elmo document projector the modern descendant of an overhead projector is visible to the right of the lectern The remainder of the electronics are hidden away in the lectern There are also a number of computer labs fitted with dedicated computer terminals These facilities allow the Academy to purchase a limited number of user licenses for specialized an expensive software Ms Dianne Taha Director of Instructional Technology and Mr Charles Schutlheiss Instructional Technology Specialist work closely with the faculty to develop new applications for technology in the classroom The Academy also uses Blackboard a proprietary educational delivery system to help faculty manage course content Wireless Access Signs like these are popping up all over

    ACE academic advising program at the United States Merchant Marine Academy will be recognized for its focus on helping students succeed academically through cognitive skill development decision making opportunities academic intervention strategies and projecting academic and professional success in the global Maritime Industry Mission Statement The USMMA ACE will insure that Academy midshipmen have access to academic resources skill development opportunities and counseling in support of their development while in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science degree a United States Coast Guard license and a reserve or active duty commission All midshipmen will receive academic support in a student centered learning environment regardless of their learning style The ACE works with students professors mentors coaches tutors the registrar the community admissions administration the department of informational technology the department for institutional assessment and the regimental staff to support the Academy s Academic Division s goals ACE Program and Administration The program will be administered by the DACE to support experienced academy personnel to serve as counselors they will maintain accurate student tracking systems use a balanced use of assessment resources believe in personal interaction and have a profound commitment to the development of Merchant Marine Officers Academic Center for Excellence Objectives Train a qualified and committed staff to deliver a full complement of Educational Academic Advising Services Work with the dedicated faculty and staff to promote students skills development in becoming responsible for their own behavior development setting of personal academic goals and desire to learn Offer students means to success by providing workshops on test taking strategies time management organizational and note taking skills Provide mentor training on the Academic Alert System purpose goals and requirements Allot an appropriate amount of time for students to discuss plans programs courses academic progress and other subjects related to their educational programs

    Hall USMMA MHEMS provides onsite medical and dental care for midshipmen at no charge The staff is comprised of a health care administrator board certified physicians fully trained and credentialed physicians assistants a registered nurse dental hygienist a clinical psychologist a counselor and medically trained support personnel Key services include 24 hour Emergency Medical Services EMS coverage for midshipmen faculty staff and visitors through the midshipmen run EMS program with support provided by local emergency services All Midshipmen who participate in the EMS program are New York State Certified Emergency Medical Technicians Midshipmen healthcare provided o MHEMS is well prepared to handle routine medical care general dentistry dental examinations dental hygiene Midshipman counseling and personal development services Access to a full range of referral services Precommisioning physicals Sea Year Physicals for medical clearance by USCG for obtaining Merchant Mariner documents and a USCG license Act as Liaison with The Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board DoDMERB for applicants and midshipmen When medical care needs rise above the scope of services that MHEMS provides onsite at USMMA these higher level of care needs are provided by the highly respected North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System at their North Shore University Hospital location less than 5 miles from USMMA A multitude of various healthcare providers are also located in the surrounding community who specialize in many specialty care needs It is important to note that Midshipmen are responsible for costs related to healthcare that goes beyond the basic services available onsite through MHEMS at USMMA Midshipmen are also responsible on a personal out of pocket basis for healthcare needs associated with injury illness or diagnosis resulting from a pre existing condition a non disclosed condition or any medical condition which is incongruent with Academy regulations policies These medical needs requiring
