  • SAT and ACT Exams | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    are 560 for Critical Reading and 560 for Math Scores for the writing portion will be used for placement upon enrollment into the Academy The minimum total score of 1120 must have each of the minimum component scores as shown Achieving a total score of 1120 without having a minimum of 560 Critical Reading and a minimum of 560 Math does not meet the Academy s minimum test score requirements The Academy s College Board Code Number is 2923 ACT The current minimum qualifying scores for the ACT are 24 English and 24 Math You must also achieve a minimum composite score of 23 Each of the three minimum scores must be achieved individually in order to meet the Academy s minimum test score requirements The Academy s ACT Code Number is 2974 The basic standardized SAT Reasoning Test or standardized ACT qualifying scores for admission will be determined by the Academy for each entering class The Academy does not accept the non standard or untimed administration of the SAT or ACT It is the candidate s responsibility to register for the examinations Registration instructions are contained in information bulletins available at no cost to most secondary schools Members of the U S Armed Forces should find copies available in their units education offices Bulletins may also be obtained by writing to College Board P O Box 592 Princeton NJ 08541 or College Board P O Box 1025 Berkeley CA 94701 or American College Testing Program P O Box 168 Iowa City IA 52240 Testing and registration information is also available through the Internet at www sat org for the College Board or www act org for the American College Testing Program In the event that you have any questions concerning test requirements or if you are unable to meet

    73 74 75 76 77 78 Weight Minimum 92 95 97 100 103 106 108 111 114 117 119 122 125 128 130 133 136 139 141 Weight Maximum 142 145 149 152 156 160 163 167 170 174 177 181 185 188 192 195 199 203 206 Heart and Vascular System An electrocardiogram is required of all candidates The following conditions may be causes for rejection and require complete medical evaluation all organic valvular diseases of the heart including those improved by surgery EKG evidence of variations from normal heartbeat hypertension evidenced by a predominant blood pressure reading of 140mm or more systolic or 90mm or more diastolic The following are causes for rejection varicose veins if severe or symptomatic a heart rate greater than 100 on repeated examination a substantiated history of rheumatic fever within the previous two years recurrent attacks of rheumatic fever or evidence of residual cardiac damage a history of recurring rapid heartbeat within the preceding five years paroxysmal tachycardia Nares Septal deviation hypertrophic rhinitis or other conditions which result in 50 percent or more obstruction of either airway or which interfere with the drainage of sinus on either side are causes of rejection Skin Chronic skin diseases such as severe acne or eczema or unsightly congenital markings are cause for disqualification Pilondial sinus if evidenced by the presence of mass or discharging sinus is cause for rejection Pilondial cyst surgery within the past year is disqualifying Genitourinary System Persistent or recurrent albuminuria of any type or the persistence of casts in the urine will be cause for rejection even though the etiology cannot be determined Other causes for rejection include marked phimosis epispadias or pronounced hypospadias atrophy deformity or maldevelopment of both testicles an undescended testical of any degree Bed wetting past age 12 is disqualifying Neurological Examination A history of motion sickness e g air sea swing train or carnival ride should be thoroughly investigated A history of head injury in the past five years resulting in unconsciousness must be completely evaluated and an electroencephalogram is required Evidence of degenerative disorders and such conditions as established migraine is cause for rejection Asthma Asthma recurrent asthmatic bronchitis or exercise induced bronchospasms by diagnosis or history is cause for rejection Abdominal Wall Examination Hernia of any type is disqualifying until corrected history of operation for hernia within the past 60 days is disqualifying Other abnormal diseases and conditions which are not acceptable include stomach or small bowel ulcer or a history of one acute or chronic gall bladder disease removal of spleen for reason other than trauma Weight and Body Fat Each student at the Academy is required to meet and maintain the standards of the Department of the Navy s Merchant Marine Reserve U S Naval Reserve MMR USNR program for midshipmen Determination of a candidate s physical status is based on weight in relation to height and if required on body fat percentage The minimum and maximum parameters for individual height are listed

    whose Congressional District is located in that State A candidate does not have to reside in the same Congressional District as his her nominator a Member of the U S House of Representative CAN nominate a candidate who resides in a District other than their own as long as it is in their the nominator s State Territory This differs from nominations to the USMA USNA and USAFA Screening Interviews Nominating authorities select their nominees by any methods they wish including a screening interview This screening may be administered as early as July of the year before appointment is sought Nominees must reside in the state or territory that the nominating official represents or have a home of residence in a particular state or territory represented by the nominating official A candidate should apply for a nomination early Some nominating authorities establish deadline dates for the receipt of nomination requests in order to allow adequate time for processing and evaluating requests The ideal time for a candidate to apply for a nomination is in May of junior year in high school Deadlines Nominating authorities may submit the names of their nominees to the Academy any time between August 1 and January 31 of the school year preceding that in which admission to the Academy is sought You may request a nomination as a candidate for admission to the Academy by writing a letter in the form shown and addressing it to an appropriate nominating authority Be sure your full name is typed or printed legibly A typewritten letter is preferred We are providing an example letter for your use N B There are no Presidential Vice Presidential military affiliated JROTC honor unit ROTC or Unit Commander or Medal of Honor nominations permitted to the Academy Those nominations along with others

    required for all candidates to the Academy Service members must have at least one 1 from their high school If they have attended any college or university courses they may obtain letters from current or past instructors professors Letters are also acceptable from commissioned and non commissioned officers in the current chain of command of the service members Application Deadline The application deadline is the same as for all other applicants all application information Parts I II and III essay transcripts letters of recommendation etc must be received at the Academy Admissions Office no later than 1 March of the year the student is applying for entry If due to unusual circumstances deployment for example an enlisted member requires an extension they must receive approval for that extension from their Regional Admissions Counselor at the Academy prior to 1 March Evaluation Process Applications from enlisted members will be evaluated and considered for admission directly into the Academy However depending on the length of time it has been since the enlisted member was last in an academic environment a decision may be made instead to consider the applicant for the New Mexico Military Institute NMMI The U S Merchant Marine Academy has a limited number of billets at NMMI where students attend a rigorous academic and training program for 10 months and upon successful completion and graduation are offered admission into the Academy the following year Enlisted members who do not meet all the minimum academic requirements for admission may also be considered for NMMI Enlisted members must also complete all other admission requirements They must obtain a nomination from either a U S Senator or a Member of the U S House of Representatives That nomination may be from either their original home State of residence or the State in

    Academy candidates must have satisfactorily completed their high school education at an accredited secondary school or its equivalent They must have earned at least 16 units of credit Four of these credit units must be in English three units in mathematics from algebra geometry and trigonometry and one unit in physics or chemistry with a laboratory These requirements are minimal The Academy strongly recommends that candidates take four years of mathematics and both physics and chemistry Courses in mechanical drawing and machine shop are also desirable Successful completion of pre calculus or calculus satisfies the trigonometry requirement Candidates who are already enrolled in a college university program must meet additional criteria for admission consideration They must have earned a cumulative grade point average GPA of at least 2 5 on a 4 0 scale and must have pursued a full academic course load at least 12 credit hours per term with the exception of courses taken in summer terms Successful candidates must have taken Mathematics course s Pre Calculus Calculus Science Chemistry with Lab Physics with Lab and English composition course preferred Other recommended courses would include engineering based courses business courses such as Economics and Statistics and other technical subjects It is strongly recommended that candidates not pursue non technical liberal arts courses as those will not assist the selection committee in determining if the candidate has the ability to handle the heavy highly technical coursework that they will be immersed in upon entering the Academy Additionally candidates who are already enrolled in a college university program must provide a minimum of two 2 letters of recommendation from current or past college instructors professors By March 1 of the year in which they are seeking admission candidates must submit evidence with their official application showing the completion of all

    Each state has an assigned number of appointees proportionate to its representation in Congress After the Academy has selected its principal appointees the remaining qualified candidates will be designated as alternates to be appointed in order of merit should openings occur within their states In the event that a state fails to satisfy its allotment appointments to fill the unfilled vacancies are determined from the national list of alternates ranked in order of merit as described above A candidate s competitive standing is established by test scores on the standardized SAT I or ACT examination high school class rank academic record evidence of leadership potential interest in a maritime career letters of recommendation and other factors that are considered effective indicators of motivation and probable completion of training Bonus points are awarded to candidates with at least six months of sea service aboard merchant or naval vessels Early Notification of Admission Highly qualified candidates may receive early notification of their appointment after complete evaluation of their qualifications All other candidates will be notified of their status on or about late March early April of the year in which they seek admission Orientation Briefing Day for Principal Candidates All principal candidates

    Naval Science for clarification of Navy policy and for guidance on resolving the issue In the event that a midshipman fails to display the qualities of leadership character and aptitude expected of a prospective commissioned officer in the U S Armed Forces the Chief of Naval Education and Training CNET may terminate the midshipman s appointment The midshipman is also separated from the Academy is such a case Naval Science Program All midshipmen are required to take a program of courses administered by the Department of Naval Science CNET located in Pensacola Florida prescribes the naval science curriculum and furnishes required textbooks references and training aids Naval science courses include Introduction to the Merchant Marine Reserve Naval Science for the Merchant Marine Reserve Officer Advanced Naval Science for the Merchant Marine Reserve Officer Fundamentals of Leadership and Ethics and Independent Study Naval Science courses are part of each student s complete course of instruction and must be satisfactorily completed as a prerequisite for graduation Your Service Obligation Contract As required by Title 46 Appendix United States Code each student entering the Academy who is a citizen of the United States must sign an agreement committing themselves To complete the course of instruction at the Academy unless separated by the Academy To fulfill the requirements for a license as an officer in the merchant marine of the United States on or before the date of graduation from the Academy To maintain a license as an officer in the merchant marine of the United States for at least six 6 years following the date of graduation from the Academy To apply for and to accept if tendered an appointment to serve as a commissioned officer in the U S Navy Reserve including the Merchant Marine Reserve U S Navy Reserve U S Coast Guard Reserve or any other Reserve or National Guard unit of an armed force of the United States for at least eight 8 years following the date of graduation from the Academy To serve the foreign and domestic commerce and national defense of the United States in the maritime industry in one of the occupations approved for USMMA graduates see below for at least five 5 years following the date of graduation from the Academy As a merchant marine officer serving on vessels documented under the laws of the United States or on vessels owned and operated by the United States or by any state or territory of the United States As a commissioned officer on active duty in an armed force of the United States or in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA As an employee in a United States maritime related industry profession or marine science approved by the Secretary of Transportation if the Secretary determines that service under subparagraph E 1 above is not available to the individual By combining the services specified in subparagraphs E 1 E 2 and E 3 and To report to the Secretary of Transportation on the compliance with these
