    with the traits of leadership discipline and dedication required for a career that typically may include service at sea maritime employment ashore and serving as a commissioned officer in a reserve component of the U S Armed Forces Most Requested Pages Library Registrar Curriculum About the Program The Academy is located in Kings Point New York Its 82 acre waterside campus lies on Long Island s north shore about 20 miles east of New York City The Academy is a national institution operated by the Federal Government s Maritime Administration an agency of the U S Department of Transportation The Academy s Regiment of Midshipmen numbers approximately 950 young men and women who represent every state of the Union as well as U S Trust Territories and Possessions The size of the student body contributes to a true sense of camaraderie among the members of the Regiment and permits the Academy to maintain an excellent student teacher ratio A sound college education is the foundation for every profession in our society and the mariner s profession is no exception The academic curriculum at the Academy is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and provides each midshipman with the broad college education required for a bachelor of science degree with the specialized training for licensing as a merchant marine officer and with the military knowledge for commissioning in a reserve component of the Armed Forces Few colleges can offer such a full range of credentials at graduation Challenging Environment The Academy challenges its midshipmen intellectually and physically The academic program is demanding the regimental system rigorous Freshman fourth class or plebe year is particularly strenuous as students make the transition from high school graduate to Academy midshipman In their first few months they learn many new terms the

    and walkways are named after individuals whose deeds have brought fame to America s merchant marine USMMA Campus is located at Kings Point NY On the slope looking toward Long Island Sound stands a monument to the Academy s World War II casualties Around this monument are grouped an outdoor swimming pool a boat basin and the Yocum Waterfront Center Gibbs Hall with modern science and engineering laboratories and Samuels Hall with Humanities department classrooms the Continuing Education Office the Computer Resources Office a ship s bridge simulator and laboratories for teaching nautical science A beautiful interfaith chapel which serves the religious needs of the regiment stands on a grassy knoll to the south of the War Memorial Across the Campus Wiley Hall facing Long Island Sound is the chief administration center of the Academy Formerly the home of automobile magnate Walter P Chrysler this historic building contains the offices of the superintendent senior members of his staff and the Admissions Office East of Wiley Hall lies the center of the Academy campus marked by a striking 172 foot flagpole Surrounding this landmark are Fulton Hall the marine engineering and science building Bowditch Hall housing the Department of Marine Transportation and the 900 seat Ackerman Auditorium and the Schuyler Otis Bland Memorial Library Delano Hall the midshipman dining room and five dormitory buildings Barry Rogers Cleveland Murphy and Palmer Halls complete the circle of buildings enclosing the main campus The dormitories and dining room are connected by an underground promenade which contains the midshipman lounge and canteen uniform shop post office laundry facilities bank barber shop and ship s service store Athletics and Activities On the perimeter of the Academy are athletic fields for football baseball lacrosse and soccer as well as tennis and handball courts and a quarter mile

    meetings provided Commandant Sosa the opportunity to introduce himself to the larger USMMA community As he discussed his philosophy and way forward Sosa emphasized that our mission is tied to the academy s mission but in a much more focused way it s about the midshipmen It s about helping develop the leadership skills and the standards of conduct required of officers in the U S Merchant Marine and U S Armed Forces and that s really what it all comes down to See Commandant s Intent Philosophy in related documents Rodriguez Helis and Sosa then addressed questions from parents and alumni covering a wide range of topics including the Academic Dean hiring process Merchant Marine and military leadership styles event scheduling watchstanding improvements to the fitness facilities and the future of the Regimental Band In response to a question about the Academy s Leadership Development Program Rodriquez provided an anecdote from his prior service on the Academy s staff Noting the detrimental effect of not having a formal process to track a midshipman s leadership skills in that case he noted I m all for a formal leadership program here I think we need it and I m happy that we have the faculty on board and we re moving ahead with one Answering a question from Captain Stephen Ford 70 and Wayne Torjusen 74 if there is a program to trail or monitor cadets from Vickery Gate to graduation to provide feedback and improve on the admissions effectiveness Helis said we track midshipmen in terms of retention and success rates from admission through graduation He detailed various measurements and noted in recent years we re seeing an improvement in the retention and graduation rates Eugene Bonacci 63 asked how have the academy s national academic ranking for its

  • Midshipmen Brighten the Way for Historic Lightship | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    New York City s South Street Seaport Museum These twelve First Classmen are contributing their technical skills to a large team of volunteers that have been committed to a restoring the historic ships at the Seaport Museum This Lightship AMBROSE was the first floating lighthouse that illuminated New York s Ambrose Channel off the entrance to New York Bay east and south of Sandy Hook 6 2 miles and 097 degrees from the Sandy Hook Lighthouse A succession of lightships had marked the entrance channels to New York from 1823 1967 The station was replaced by the Ambrose Light Tower and ultimately the RW A Buoy USLV 87 which served that station from 1908 to 1932 ended her active career in 1966 is now located at Pier 16 in Lower Manhattan The Winton Diesel engine being overhauled by Professor Ackerman s class was installed in 1933 replacing the original steam engine Currently there are no plans to get the vessel underway but according to Mike Weiss Waterfront Foreman at the South Street Seaport Museum the project which is expected to last several months will make it possible for future visitors to enjoy interactive exhibits that will include hands on demonstrations
