  • Secretary LaHood Presents Award to USMMA Faculty, Staff and Midshipmen | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    process The award presented by Secretary Ray LaHood recognizes the leadership and significant contributions in developing the U S Merchant Marine Academy s Strategic Plan We are very grateful for the time and attention provided by the faculty staff and midshipmen who participated in the campus surveys campus outreach sessions goal teams and Steering Committee said Secretary LaHood The strategic plan is a reflection of their ideas and recommendations and I am sure it will guide the Academy toward an even brighter future Plan Moves to Implementation Phase The plan which was unveiled by the Academy Superintendent Rear Admiral James A Helis last August has recently moved into its implementation phase Helis stated I am very impressed by the dedication of our entire Academy community Most Steering Committee members continue to serve on newly formed implementation action teams and working with their colleagues are contributing in a very tangible way to the Academy s long term success For a full list of honorees please see the following link insert here The implementation action teams have been meeting since early September to develop work plans to meet the recommendations and performance measures of the Strategic Plan On October 26 2012 an

  • Midshipmen Observe National Remembrance Day | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    heroes FARMINGDALE N Y Throughout the nation the graves of fallen soldiers and veterans have been decorated in honor of their service as part of the Wreaths Across America program during National Remembrance Day Fifteen midshipmen led by the newly appointed Regimental Commander Daniel Galginaitis laid wreaths at the grave sites of fallen heroes who lost their lives in securing freedom for our country at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale New York Our midshipmen were honored to participate at this very special remembrance ceremony at Long Island s only national veteran s cemetery said Rear Admiral Helis Ph D superintendent at the U S Merchant Marine Academy Midshipmen and graduates of the U S Merchant Marine Academy have actively served in every battle since World War II We take time to honor them and all who have sacrificed for our freedom All six represented branches of the military were represented the U S Army the U S Marine Corps the U S Navy the U S Air Force the U S Coast Guard and the U S Merchant Marine Academy were honored during the ceremony Since 1992 Wreaths Across America has honored deceased veterans by sponsored wreath laying

  • United States Merchant Marine Academy to March in Presidential Inaugural Parade | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    close to 200 midshipmen will travel to Washington D C The midshipmen participating in the parade represent about a quarter of the Academy s overall Regiment of Midshipmen which numbers 991 students These young men and women hail from almost every state of the Union as well as U S Territories Possessions and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico The regiment has dedicated many hours in preparation for President Obama s inauguration through a series of parade practices and musical performance rehearsals As an institution we recognize the historical significance of all Presidential Inaugurations and we are privileged to participate in the 2013 ceremonial parade said Rear Admiral James Helis Ph D superintendent of USMMA The USMMA at Kings Point N Y was established in 1943 It is one of the five federal service academies Over the past 70 years midshipmen from USMMA have marched in every Presidential Inauguration Parade since Harry Truman took the oath of office as President of the United States in 1949 The members of the Regimental Band have been specially trained for this assignment by the Academy s Director of Music CAPT Kenneth R Force The event in the nation s capital will be the 12th

  • Midshipmen Reflect on Presidential Inaugural Parade 2013 | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    hinder the excitement of the midshipmen from the U S Merchant Marine Academy I Felt So Honored This was a once in a lifetime opportunity of marching in front of the President of the United States in a historic inaugural parade The Regimental Band the Honor Guard the Color Guard and a marching contingent travelled down understanding the honor of being a part of history in the making I felt so honored to march in the Inaugural Parade Let s be realistic how many people can say that they marched in the Inaugural Parade I am so proud of the participants We practiced we worked hard and we did the Academy justice It was delete a phenomenal It was an experience that I will never forget said Midshipman Janay Weathers regimental executive officer First Class Leading the Regiment of Midshipmen in the parade was the Honor Guard commanded by Midshipman Daniel Dunn First Class It was a great experience for the Honor Guard It was strange to be at the very front of the regiment trying to keep in marching form with the U S Coast Guard ahead of us When approaching the review stand I spotted the Secretary of Transportation who we all knew from the Academy It was cool to hear the Kings Point alumni cheer us on every half mile or so said midshipman Daniel Dunn regimental honor guard commander First Class Not An Easy Road The road to this parade however was not quite as easy as one might think There were many mornings of marching practice musters and more all leading up to the all too fast three minutes of marching past the President and rendering Honors I will remember it with pride because despite all the extra preparation and training Every single midshipman pulled

    to help continue the important work of training and preparing the next generation of Merchant Mariners said deputy secretary Porcari Her invaluable experience will help ensure a bright future for the Academy Dunlap an experienced and highly decorated 28 year Navy veteran holds a master s degree in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College and Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern University Admiral Dunlap most recently served as U S Naval Forces Africa director Africa Engagement Group where she provided direct oversight of all maritime theater security cooperation with Africa including the internationally recognized Africa Partnership Station program During her years of service Dunlap was awarded the Legion of Merit three gold stars the Meritorious Service Medal three gold stars the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal three gold stars the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various other campaign and service awards Thank you all for having faith in choosing me for this position I assure you I am the right one I am going to work hard to justify your faith in me said Dunlap deputy superintendent I will be dedicated to working to provide a rich and rewarding educational experience that will

    create a relationship of love support and friendship between the child the team and the child s family The event drew over 275 people and USMMA Head Coach Mike Toop was one of four speakers to address those in attendance It was a great day for Friends of Jaclyn said Toop after the event Those in attendance were great supporters of Mikey and his family and are great representatives of the Academy Superintendent Admiral James A Helis PhD added We are extremely proud of the entire team and Head Football Coach Mike Toop Class of 1977 for their commitment to Mikey who has truly become part of our USMMA family Over the last several seasons Mikey has joined the USMMA football team at practices and games interacting with the midshipmen and staff on a personal level In his comments Coach Toop spoke about how lucky the Academy is to have Mikey on their team He sparks something special and inspiring inside his players Toop said Those in attendance included seniors on the football team Mike Tobin and James Cameron as well as Mikey s mom Chrissy dad Matt and sister Katie The 2013 Friends of Jaclyn Foundation Snowball recognized the

  • USMMA "Class of 2016" Officially Recognized as Midshipmen | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    They have worked hard in the classroom and in the regiment and they have come together as a class The Class of 2016 has been very impressive since day one of Indoctrination They have more than earned their recognition and I am expecting great things from them over the next three years said Kennedy The plebes assembled in Ackerman Auditorium for a scheduled regimental period not knowing if they would hear the long awaited announcement After a briefing by Commander Andrew McCarthy supervisory training officer they were told that they had five minutes to change into boiler suits and muster in formation by company for stretching and physical training They were then directed to several stations to commence with recognition activities Regimental Commander Daniel Galginaitis explained The steps to reach recognition by the Class of 2016 started on the day they reported in July Throughout their first year here at the academy they have participated in many service projects including cleaning up of Kings Point Park and helping out the Rockaway community following Hurricane Sandy Their training officers Midshipmen Baitcher Witte Heard and Beebe have taken them from high school students to fully functioning members of the Regiment of Midshipman
