    is a reminder to bring the light to the dark places within ourselves and in our world Place USMMA Mariners Memorial Chapel 300 Steamboat Road Kings Point N Y Date Monday December 14 2015 Time 7 p m For anyone requiring assistance please RSVP to externalaffairs usmma edu Guests are encouraged to arrive early as chapel as space is limited The Mariners Memorial Chapel overlooking Long Island Sound has been called the people s chapel as it serves and honors all faiths It has been a refuge for divine guidance in times of celebration and in moments of peril The chapel commemorates the sacrifices of the officers and men of U S Merchant Marine who gave their lives at sea during World War I and II The Chapel belongs to merchant mariners and to all Americans it stands as one of our country s national memorials to America s wartime seamen and serves to remind America of the great sacrifices of merchant mariners especially in time of war A large book The Roll of Honor in the pedestal case near the front altar reminds us to Tell America and contains the names of every U S Merchant Mariner killed in

  • Thanksgiving at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    the annual Thanksgiving dinner celebration Thanksgiving dinner held in Delano Hall is one of USMMA s most cherished annual traditions The event is the kick off to the holiday season and time of reflection Rodriguez reminded the midshipmen and guests to remember the cadets and mariners at sea At this time of the year when we are giving thanks and looking forward to the holidays with our families let us pray for and be grateful for the safe return of our midshipmen and seafarers everywhere The dinner was served family style with one plebe having the honor of carving the turkey at each table To help them get it right Head Chef Steve Furman provided them training in the art of turkey carving before the meal This year 660 midshipmen and 42 guests shared 75 turkeys plus stuffing sweet potatoes vegetables apple cider and apple pie with whipped cream for dessert So cherish the people who love you give a thought for all of those who are far from home and take pride in our maritime profession and your place within it Rodriguez said in closing All of us at the Maritime Administration wish you all safe journeys home and

  • USMMA Celebrates Midshipmen Return From Sea | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    every midshipmen at USMMA earns a minimum of 300 days seatime as part of their Sea Year Each midshipman referred to as a cadet only during Sea Year is scheduled as an A Split or B Split Cadet B split refers to the Sea Period that ends on the last Sunday of Fall break Midshipmen who returned from sea for the first time completed approximately 120 days at sea and those who returned from their second sailing period completed approximately 240 days at sea Director of Professional Development Career Services Captain Gene Albert USMS addressed the midshipmen To the 2017 B Splits your cadet sea time is over and may your next discharge read Third Mate or Third Assistant Engineer in five short trimesters To the 2018 B Splits only 109 days to your return to sea said Albert He explained that some cadets were aboard vessels with short port stays of 8 hours or less and some for weeks Such is the life of a mariner He encouraged the newly returned mariners to share your sea stories with each other and hold these memories dear Midshipmen got a head start sharing stories a few days earlier during the Academy s first Sea Story Sunday held in Land Hall Organized by the Academy s Director of Student Activities Nicholas Rachowicz midshipmen and faculty shared their sea going experiences in a relaxed forum that gave all present an opportunity to reflect upon their time at sea Stories ranged from the dangers of Alaska s icy waters and a harrowing underway replenishment UNREP to the beauty of the Aurora Borealis Rachowicz complimented the story tellers including Lt Fionna Boyle Midshipmen 1st Class Josh Rains Jason Black and Jeremy Guettlien and Midshipman 2nd Class Sara Pisarski They were funny and kept the audience

  • Midshipmen Learn about Maritime Risk at Symposium | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    the opportunity to attend the 6th Annual Maritime Risk Symposium at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken New Jersey earlier this week The symposium entitled Risk in the Western Hemisphere and Southern Border Approaches included speakers who discussed transnational threats and maritime challenges to the Marine Transportation System MTS and U S national security over the next ten years specifically focusing on 1 Combating Networks 2 Securing Borders and 3 Safeguarding Commerce The midshipmen were privileged to hear first hand from experts including U S Coast Guard Commandant Adm Paul F Zukunft U S Maritime Adminitration Deputy Maritime Administrator Michael J Rodriguez and Royal Navy Rear Adm ret Christopher J Parry CBE Author of Super Highway Sea Power in the 21st Century among others The trip was organized by Midshipman 2nd Class Sara Pisarski who said I would like to thank Capt Moskoff for offering us the opportunity to attend the Symposium It was extremely informational we learned more about maritime security and the new risks that are being caused by some nations She added Many people think celestial navigation is outdated However it isn t because if someone were to knock out our satellites we would have to

  • USMMA Delivers Historic Cargo to The Pentagon During Training Cruise | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    Canal At Chesapeake City a Maryland pilot boarded and guided the vessel the rest of the way to Clinton Street Pier 1 astern of another historic vessel the SS John W Brown a Liberty Ship from WWII On the morning of November 3 midshipmen and crewmembers delivered the SS Mayaguez flying bridge binnacle to Mr Eric Marr of the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration Commission for further transport to the Office of Secretary of Defense Historical Exhibits Curator Albert Jones Midshipman 1st Class Austin Neuman said I built the crate for it and a few others took part in loading and discharging it It was very cool to take part in moving a big piece of history The SS Mayaguez was built in 1946 as a C 2 type vessel for Grace Lines and was originally christened Santa Eliana She was converted to cargo container ship in 1964 In 1966 she was purchased by Sea Land Services and renamed the SS Mayaguez The vessel crewed by U S Merchant Mariners actively supported military operations throughout the Vietnam War On May 12 1975 Cambodia s Khmer Rouge regime attacked and seized the vessel in international waters The crew was captured and were held as prisoners The U S Military located the vessel at anchor near Koh Tang an island approximately 50 miles off the coast of Cambodia near the border of Vietnam President Gerald Ford declared the seizure an act of piracy and ordered military action Although the entire crew was released and the vessel was recovered the battle that followed resulted the loss of 41 Marines and Airmen who were killed or missing in action and 50 wounded Dr Joshua Smith Interim Director of the American Merchant Marine Museum explained the significance of the binnacle This binnacle helps

  • Academy's Torah Scrolls Rededication Links Generations of Jewish Midshipmen | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    the rededication of the Academy s three Torah scrolls A 2010 inspection found the scrolls were in disrepair no longer kosher for use in services and needed repairs Working with the Jewish Welfare Board JWB Jewish Chaplains Council and with the help of a donation from Eugene Landy class of 1955 Melcer Alex Rosenberg and the JWB had the scrolls sent to the non profit Machon Ot Institute in Jerusalem to be repaired in a painstaking line by line word by word and letter by letter inspection process The renovated scrolls were returned to the Academy this summer just in time for the 2015 Homecoming celebration Chaplain Lt Cmdr Jerry Durham U S Navy thanked Alex Rosenberg and Melcer noting it is such an incredible opportunity to have the three Torah scrolls rededicated the Mariner s Memorial Chapel Not only are they a part of our Academy s history but they are essential to worship for our Jewish midshipmen and alumni About 100 congregants attended the service which Alex Rosenberg led with Cantorial Soloist Shanna Zell Midshipman 2nd Class Stacee Glass a Marine Transportation Major from Johnstown Pa and Plebe Michael Sobelman a freshman from Paramus N J participated in the service linking the Jewish alumni to the current midshipmen Smiling in their white uniforms they proudly carried the scrolls down the aisle while the congregation stood in honor and celebration of the rededication I thought the Jewish service at the Mariners Chapel was a great experience It was special to be part of it said Sobelman Glass said being able to gather with alumni students and friends was a testament not only to the rededication of the Torahs but to the dedication of those who are keeping the community alive A major part of Judaism is keeping traditions active

    Media Age How Ethics and Perception Must Guide Our Service Members in which he reflects on the duty and responsibility of public servants in the social media age to accept expanded roles associated with earning public trust Superintendent Rear Adm James A Helis USMMA said I congratulate our award winners Ethical leadership and service are at the forefront of the Academy experience To have these two recent graduates recognized by the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity is quite an honor for them and the Academy Mueller took time to thank USMMA Director of Ethics Capt Reed Bonadonna USMS for his continued support Together we completed a 3 credit independent study during one trimester on ethical giving which developed into the essay submitted for the Prize in Ethics He added I ve received a great deal of positive response from readers as all people cope with ethical giving situations daily and the paper helps solve that issue of How much to whom and why to give to others Mueller s recommends midshipmen write about their Sea Year experience While we often share our sea stories and captivate others in conversation however developing them through writing allows a deeper appreciation and understanding of what it means to be a Kings Pointer From combining these real world experiences and independent academic study every midshipman has the ability to write for this competition and beyond Asaro who was unable to attend the award ceremony due to his military service commitments also had advice for the Academy s midshipmen Ethics is at the base of what we do To be well esteemed by those we work for and those who work for us we must eternally dedicate ourselves to that which is right Develop your sense of responsibility early and sharpen it often It will
