    Team Therapy dogs are a great stress reliever especially during exam time said USMMA Director of Student Activities Nicholas Rachowicz who worked with Midshipman 2nd Class Daniel Curry and the Midshipman Council to bring the dogs to Kings Point We wanted to do something to increase morale during finals week said Curry Midshipmen took turns meeting the dogs and thanking their owners for volunteering their time Midshipman 2nd Class Dan

    and apply some of the concepts I have learned in the classroom said Plebe Erica Lawlor of Stafford Ct who ran the Art and Creamy Color demonstration Both children and adults were impressed by our experiments and were interested in the scientific meaning It was great to represent the Academy at this function as well as interact with the other colleges participating in this event Staffing three tables set up right at the event s entrance the USMMA Science Club midshipmen were a very visible presence at this year s event Plebe Garrett Von Seggern who came to USMMA from Heidelberg Germany and Plebe Joshua McGlone from Panama City Fl also welcomed the children and other participants as they entered the hall ensured they had eye protection and answered questions Coordinated by Science Club President Midshipman 2nd Class Jake Andrew Vice President Midshipman 2nd Class Caleb Navin and faculty members Dr Michael Melcer Capt Anthony Nigro USMS and Dr Ping Furlan the Science Club sponsored ten activities around the theme Chemistry Colors Our World including Hydrogen Lamp Color by Light Emission How UV Affects Our Skin Color Can Tell Fortune Telling Fish and Solar Hydrogen Fuel Cell Plebe Ella Sherrill of Ketchikan Alaska showed participants how to use chemistry to write and reveal hidden messages in her Color and Invisible Message demonstration The midshipmen also visited the museum and participated in the other NCW activities We got very involved and finished with customized sodas bracelets with beads that detect UV light slime and much more said Lawlor It was a very useful way to spend my time and I look forward to future science club events Furlan thanked the midshipmen and faculty sponsors we could not have done this without your exothermicity bright colorful articulate and fun Each of you

  • USMMA Announces New Interim Academic Dean | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    from Brooklyn Polytechnic University and a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of New York University concentrating in Thermodynamics Fluid Dynamics Heat Transfer and Engineering Management His dissertation entitled A Combined Gas Cooled Nuclear Reactor and Fuel Cell Cycle dealt with a combined cycle marine engineering propulsion system which allowed him to further specialize in marine engineering gas cooled nuclear reactors and solid oxide fuel cells Dr Palmer is also a graduate of the United States Navy s Nuclear Power Program where he was certified as an Engineering Officer of the Watch Nuclear Plant Engineer and Engineering Duty Officer CAPT Palmer used these certifications during his employment with General Electric s Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory where he had the responsibility of training and certifying Navy personnel in the operation of Nuclear Power for our nation s nuclear powered submarines and aircraft carriers His position as Nuclear Engineering Officer of the Watch Engineering Duty Officer and Nuclear Plant Engineer permitted him not only to be a member on the watch team operating a nuclear reactor and an entire marine propulsion steam plant but also to lead as the chief member of the team with responsibility of overseeing the nuclear reactor and marine propulsion steam plant At the Academy Professor Palmer in addition to teaching held many responsibilities within the Academic Division in areas such as the budget strategic planning Middle States STCW Academic Review Boards Chairmanship of the Faculty Personnel Committee the Professional Review Board and a number of other committees including selection committees He participated and assisted in several key Middle States STCW and ABET audits Further he led an ongoing budget plan to refurbish and upgrade the Academy s many laboratories simulators and classrooms to meet the needs and standards of the 21st century During CAPT Palmer s

    Academy s former Athletic Director Susan Petersen Lubow at a memorial service held at the Mariners Memorial Chapel and simulcast at Ackerman Auditorium Tuesday Familiar faces from near and far came together to celebrate and honor the exceptional life and accomplishments of Petersen Lubow who passed away earlier this month Former USMMA Superintendent Vice Adm ret Joseph D Stewart USMS shared many stories about her She was the most vibrant most energetic and best fighter I have ever known said Stewart Thousands of midshipmen got a better education because of Sue He went on to say She set the best example of Acta non Verba I have ever known Thomas Hughes USMMA Class of 1980 echoed Stewart s words 8 000 midshipmen went through the Academy while she was here said Hughes I guarantee all 8 000 students remember Sue because she stood in their corner she made their life better The final speaker USMMA Football Coach Michael G Toop USMMA Class of 1977 recounted her historic legacy She was a great woman mother daughter athlete educator coach administrator mentor and friend His sentiments were shared by those gathered in her honor we will miss you but you have taught

    while constantly facing the hazards of the unforgiving seas where the routine can all too quickly turn deadly said Helis As we go forth today let us dedicate ourselves to the memory and the sacrifices of the crew of the El Faro Let them live on as examples of the quiet professionalism of those who take to the sea and diligently stand their watch in all hazards for all times in peace and war Command Chaplain Lt Cmdr Jerry Durham led a moment of silence and prayer He offered words of comfort Eternal Father today we mourn the loss of 33 of our fellow mariners to the sea Men and women who s spirits compelled them to serve our nation and our world by giving of themselves for a greater good Today I ask for your Spirit to comfort the immediate family members whose loved ones comprised the crew of the El Faro May your peace surround them Be with our fellow Mariners as we seek to understand and comprehend if possible the gravity of such a loss Then Midshipman Emily Bull Regimental Operations Officer read the names of the crew members including Steve Shultz Class of 1984 Midshipman Zachary Dy gave one strike of the bell for each Midshipman Bull then announced the name of El Faro and Midshipman Dy struck eight bells to signify the end of her watch A single bugler played taps before the Regimental Band ended the ceremony with Eternal Father Strong to Save Afterward midshipmen shared memories of the crew During my Sea Year I sailed with Third Assistant Engineer Mike Holland on another ship We were together every day for 2 months He was a great guy said Midshipman Mitchell Boyd The loss of the El Faro has inspired me to consider active

    U S container ship El Faro last night we received confirmation that one of our own Steven Wink Shultz Kings Point class of 1984 was a member of its crew We join our partner Academies and the entire Merchant Marine community in grieving the loss the El Faro s 33 crew members We express our deepest condolences to their family friends and co workers in the maritime industry In the words of the Maritime Administrator Paul N Jaenichen U S Merchant Mariners answer a call that often takes them away from home for months and at times places them in harm s way serving with great skill honor and passion for work that provides the lifeblood of our Nation s economic and national security We are honored and humbled to be part of this vital industry We are also reminded of the challenges of the sea and the purpose and importance of the U S Merchant Marine Academy s mission to educate and graduate licensed merchant mariners and leaders of exemplary character who will serve America s marine transportation and defense needs in peace and war We will honor the El Faro s crew members at a memorial ceremony during

  • USMMA Mourns The Passing Of Former Athletic Director Sue Petersen Lubow | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference ECAC a regional conference comprised of 320 Division I II and III institutions Petersen Lubow was appointed as an Executive Board member the Chair of the Marketing Committee the Chair of the Swimming and Diving Committee the Chair of the Finance Committee and the Chairperson of the ECAC Division III Football Committee a position also never before held by a woman In the fall of 1998 Petersen Lubow was honored by the ECAC as the 1998 Jostens Female Administrator of the Year She is also the most recent recipient of the ECAC s Katherine Ley Award for being a strong proponent of women s issues a creator of programs and opportunities for women in athletics an idea person a role model for women coaches and administrators a person of demonstrated leadership one who has the ability to make things happen and the ability to work with others a person with a sense of what the past has to offer and what the future may bring a person with a sense of humor that makes good times better and bad times easier to bear Petersen Lubow began working at the Academy in 1979 when she was appointed the head coach position for the both the men s and women s swimming diving teams making her at the time the first female to be the head coach of a varsity men s team at any service academy During her time at the helm of the men s and women s swimming diving teams the two programs combined for a 148 67 record over 11 years Petersen Lubow coached 48 All America male and female swimmers and divers including both a men s and women s NCAA Division III Individual National Champion Throughout her coaching and administrative career in swimming diving Petersen Lubow had been very involved with both USA Swimming and NCAA Swimming Diving She served as the Secretary and Rules Editor for the NCAA Division I II and III Swimming and Diving Committee Petersen Lubow also acted as the Head Manager for the 1998 World Swimming Championships travelling with the USA National Team to Perth Australia in January 1998 In October 2004 she was tapped as the head manager for the USA Short Course World Swim Team that hosted the World Championships for the first time in history Petersen Lubow devoted the summers of 1993 95 to the USA National Swim program serving as Head and Assistant Manager Petersen Lubow an honorary alumna of the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation graduated from Springfield College in 1975 She went on to earn her Master s Degree in Health Education from Hofstra University in 1979 Prior to coaching Petersen Lubow was a national competitor in AAU age group swimming She was also an All American in the 200 individual medley as well as the medley relay 1971 72 at Springfield College where she also served as the team captain Petersen Lubow was inducted into Springfield College s
