  • Third Company Wins USMMA 72nd Birthday Trivia Contest | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    in the fountain near the Academy s flag pole The trivia contest was an opportunity to give our midshipmen a little history lesson while having some fun celebrating the Academy s birthday said Tobin It is always important to make sure our current midshipmen who are our future Alumni learn about the history and traditions of the U S Merchant Marine Academy In his birthday message Superintendent Rear Adm James A Helis USMS Ph D said Academy graduates and the Academy continue to be essential for a vital maritime industry and our strong flexible national defense As we reflect on our 72 years we should be optimistic while being ready to brave whatever challenges lay ahead ready to lead with action The Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent Rear Adm Susan Dunlap USMS joined the midshipmen faculty staff and alumni in a lunchtime celebration of the Academy s 72nd birthday in Delano Hall where the Academy s youngest midshipman 17 year old Plebe William Kelley had the honor of cutting the school s birthday cake Third Company s prize to rack in sleeping until 7 a m tomorrow was greeted with enthusiastic cheers The U S Merchant Marine Academy located in Kings

    Merchant Marine Academy s USMMA annual career fair Sea Fair 2015 held in O Hara Hall earlier today The event coordinated by the Department of Professional Development and Career Services introduced the entire Regiment of Midshipmen to opportunities for internships and full time military federal and maritime service Recruiters from all over the United States expressed a very strong desire to hire USMMA graduates Mr Jesse Wentworth Outreach Program Specialist National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration NOAA said Given NOAA s unique mission and our roots back to Thomas Jefferson and the coastal survey we come to Kings Point to take advantage of the talent the midshipmen bring and apply on day one Overall they are a great fit for our organization The future is extremely bright for Kings Pointers In the recent College Scorecard issued by the U S Department of Education among the 98 four year schools offering transportation programs USMMA ranked first for Earnings After School and Percentage of Earning Above High School Graduate Capt Eugene Albert Head of the Department of Professional Development and Career Services was very pleased by the number of participants offering obligation fulfilling employment The job market for USMMA graduates pursuing a career at

    S Merchant Marine Academy was dedicated 72 years ago the tide was turning in the European fronts of World War II Our Merchant Mariners braved the dangers of the Atlantic and the gauntlet of the Straits of Gibraltar and brought the war to the Mediterranean ending the Axis North African campaign and in September forcing the Italian government to surrender as the Allies landed on the mainland It was a time for both optimism and commitment to overcome the severe challenges that still lay ahead Engaged in every major theater of war the U S Merchant Marine endured exceptionally heavy casualties by American standards Our Academy lost 142 of our own in the war s many fronts The eldest Kings Pointers can be proud of their critical contribution to victory We remember and honor them as we maintain the Academy s commitment to leadership and service two fundamental elements of the Academy experience Academy graduates and the Academy continue to be essential for a vital maritime industry and our strong flexible national defense As we reflect on our 72 years we should be optimistic while being ready to brave whatever challenges lay ahead ready to lead with action Acta non

  • U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Los Angeles – Long Beach is Year’s First Lanier Distinguished Speaker | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    honor her with one of the Academy s most prestigious awards The Light of Leadership She told the midshipmen that the pride doesn t go away after your four years at KP From my class alone we have at least one Captain or Colonel in every branch of the military Army Navy Air Force Marines and the Coast Guard In the Coast Guard currently there are three Kings Point graduates that serve as Captain of the Port LA LB Hampton Roads is 87 grad Chris Keane and San Diego is 92 grad Jon Spaner Additionally the Class of 90 has harbor pilots master mariners chief engineers professors and we even an animal veterinarian and an owner of multiple car dealerships Every one of my classmates are successful in their own right and Kings Point helped all of us get our start in that successful life After Williams inspirational speech the Regimental Commander presented her with the Light of Leadership Award The awards inscription explains The light of leadership is the light from within this light is honor and integrity the true foundation of leadership It radiates outward to provide vision encouragement and inspiration to those we lead Later Williams said the three takeaways I left with the midshipmen were 1 Deck vs Engine An age old competition within the school which is the better path I was a Deckie But I shared how heavily I rely on engineers for much of my work today But many times it is the Captain who makes the decisions 2 The will to survive similar to the will to survive by the man who treaded water for nearly 7 hours before being rescued is in us all I stressed that each and every midshipman possesses a will to survive plebe year sea projects license

    24 The USMMAAF formally awarded USMMA Academic Dean Dr Shashi Kumar the title of Honorary Alumnus They also presented USMMA Director of Music Capt Kenneth R Force USMS who is also an Honorary Alumnus the Distinguished Service Award These are well deserved honors said Superintendent Rear Adm James A Helis USMS Ph D I congratulate Dean Kumar and Capt Force There is no doubt that your significant contributions to the Academy will continue to have positive effects for years to come Dean Kumar s commitment to delivering a world class education has been an inspiration to the Kings Point faculty staff Midshipmen and alumni who have had the opportunity to work with him serving as our Academic Dean and on three separate occasions Interim Superintendent Capt Force s contributions to the Academy have been outstanding The Regimental Band under his direction brought national and international recognition to USMMA participating in events ranging from Presidential Inaugurations to the New York City St Patrick s Day Parade Kumar has served as the Academy s Academic Dean since 2007 and Force has served as the Director of Music since 1971 Their biographies are available at www usmma edu leadership academic dean academic dean

  • USMMA Midshipman Studies International Military Rules of Engagement in Italy | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    and others who are involved in mission planning and the development of rules for using force during military operations Glass who is studying ROE explained that the course itself used lectures and workshops to address ROE for international armed conflicts in the air land and sea I learned about the various international law and human rights doctrines that countries must consider when drafting ROE for various missions which could include combat humanitarian aid de escalation of forces etc She went on to say How the ROE are taught and trained can have an immense impact on the success of a mission as well Overall I learned an incredible amount of information about the moral ethical and legal dilemmas that must be faced when entering potentially hostile environments and how planning the ROE is a multi faceted and complex process that must combine a plethora of variables in to a simple set of rules meant to protect our own teams lives Her Kings Point Scholar Advisor and USMMA Director of Ethics Capt Reed Bonadonna USMS was extremely pleased that she had this opportunity He said Midshipman Glass was the only undergraduate in the course She and one other student in the

    from the Maritime Administration Headquarters in Washington D C on Sept 16 Rodriguez and Helis addressed questions covering a wide range of topics including Armed Forces pre commissioning requirements implementation of the 2010 STCW Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers amendments outreach to the Charleston S C alumni community personnel issues and summer STEM programs In response to a question on the Academy s and state schools respective roles in meeting the nations needs for licensed mariners Rodriquez noted our industry benefits from the diversity of opinion and diversity of approach to the challenges of our industry He continued by the year 2022 growth in maritime occupations is expected to exceed 104 000 job openings So we re very pleased at the prospects for growth in our industry and the model that we have at state maritime academies and the USMMA certainly support that Answering a question from Eugene Bonacci class of 1963 about the Academy s standing in recent college rankings Helis said Kings Point stands out as being an outstanding opportunity for young people The USMMA was Forbes number seven for Best Value school and number three for regional colleges in the northern region by U S News and World Report By the Department of Education s new College Scorecard among the 98 four year schools offering transportation programs USMMA was number one for Salary after Attending and Percent Earning Above HS Grad number two for Average Annual Cost and number seven for Graduation Rate The second town hall session for midshipmen faculty and Academy staff was held on campus Sept 21 After giving an overview the Superintendent and the Acting Commandant Capt Bob DeStafney answered questions submitted by e mail and from the audience about readiness for a potential lapse in federal funding sufficient rest

  • Academic Dean to Lead MARAD Maritime Education and Training | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    the intersection between state and Federal maritime education including training ship requirements Dean Kumar announced after serving at the United States Merchant Marine Academy since January 2007 as the Academic Dean and as Interim Superintendent three times I am moving on to pursue other challenges Given my strong academic and maritime background the Maritime Administrator has asked me to join the headquarters staff as Deputy Associate Administrator and National Coordinator for Maritime Education and Training In October I will begin to serve in my new role to lead MARAD s efforts to build a pipeline of future merchant mariners for our Nation and to work with State Maritime Academies to address their training ship requirements and other needs I thank my team of faculty and staff for their guidance support and professionalism in delivering a world class education and achieving national recognition for retention graduation and placement I also thank the Academy Alumni Association and Foundation and the National Parents Association for their support and my recently bestowed Honorary KP Alumnus status I wish continued success to all current and future USMMA classes and to the Academy leadership to steer thee well Kings Point USMMA Superintendent Rear Adm James A Helis USMS Ph D said even while he takes on his broader education responsibilities at MARAD Dean Kumar will remain part of the USMMA family and we look forward to his continuing advice and support for all that we do at Kings Point We commend Dean Kumar for his accomplishments while serving at the U S Merchant Marine Academy since January 2007 as the Academic Dean and as Interim Superintendent on three separate occasions His commitment to delivering a world class education has been an inspiration to the Kings Point faculty staff Midshipmen and alumni who have had the opportunity
