  • USMMA Prepares to Join Annual Sandhurst Military Skills Competition | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
Army Liaison is getting the USMMA s team ready for this annual event held the first two weeks of April It drives the slower runners to push harder to keep up with their teammates and it makes the faster runners look back and slow down because finishing together is what matters said Suero The Sandhurst journey they ve undertaken will transform the notion of leadership from a concept to a tangible skill They will know what it feels like to have a teammate look out for you they ll know what it is like to constantly look out for a teammate Midshipman 1st Class Benedetto Hungerford who is training for the competition said Sandhurst has allowed me to exercise leadership lessons that I have learned throughout my three years here in a context outside the regiment He noted the unique challenge that leadership under physical stress is much harder than exercising leadership in a relaxed environment Midshipman 1st Class Matthew E Hassan said in order to succeed every one of us must work outside of our comfort zone enduring times of physical strain and exhaustion by mental focus and perseverance Because we work as a team not one of us is alone in our efforts He continued knowing that the men and women next to me are hurting just as much are just as tired and have just as many other things in their lives that they need to take care of outside of training I have already surpassed the man I was only a few weeks ago Although this is the USMMA s first Sandhurst Competition they are in it to win Without the team or without a goal set in the distance none of us would be working as hard But today we can and tomorrow we can

  • American Merchant Marine Museum Reopens – World War II Japanese Surrender Sword Analyzed by Metropolitan Museum of Art Expert | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
service rendered by the sons of the Academy in our struggle in the Pacific In addition to the sword s 20th century historic value this analysis is exposing its value as a historic Japanese weapon With Interim Museum Director Dr Josh Smith and a half dozen museum staff and volunteers observing Metropolitan Museum of Art Special Consultant for Japanese Arms and Armor Mr Morihiro Ogawa put on his white apron surgical mask and gloves to examine the sword With just a few swift steady expert moves he disassembled the priceless weapon into its parts in about one minute Then very slowly Ogawa turned the sword s blade in his hands Using a magnifying glass and various light sources he went over blade examining it from every conceivable angle Next the sheath underwent the same examination as the staff watched in silence It s a very good sword Ogawa finally announced The weapon is about 400 years old made in the 14th century style He determined it is a naval style samurai sword signifying a high rank An observer asked for its approximate worth However unlike on the Public Broadcast Service s Antiques Road Show Ogawa noted that by museum policy he could not provide an estimate With the gift of this sword Gen MacArthur recognized the important role the Academy and Merchant Mariners played in winning the war in the Pacific said Smith Now learning the significance of this artifact as a historic weapon adds another layer of depth that I look forward to sharing with our museum visitors The sword is on display at the American Merchant Marine Museum which is reopening after renovations to bring the building into compliance with requirements of the American with Disabilities Act Located on the Academy campus at 300 Steamboat Road Kings Point
