    inspection and perseverance to get enough guests to participate Mostly it takes leadership to get everyone pulling in the same direction and working toward the same objective Regimental Operations Officer Midshipman 1st Class Emily Bull was the driving force behind the inspection She wrote the Operations Order took RSVP s from guests and paired up guests with members of the Regimental staff Guest inspectors have long been a feature of the Command Inspection with members of the faculty coaches and Academy administration participating Even four year old Jadyn Jell participated in the inspection accompanying her mother Tamara Jell the Academy s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Coordinator I expect to see a lot of neat and orderly rooms and disciplined groomed Midshipmen today said Tamara Jell as Jadyn twirled around her legs Professor Mike Ales Marine Engineering Department began attending Command Inspections in 2003 and his wife Pam started coming with him in 2005 I think the students like to have members of the faculty see another side of their life said Pam Ales Mike Ales remarked that he had seen tremendous changes in the barracks over the years I ve seen a big upgrade in the material condition he said noting that renovation of Jones and Rogers Halls had just commenced when he started to attend Command Inspections The Capital Improvement Program has made a big difference he said like night and day Plebes spent hours preparing for their first formal inspection Plebes Danielle Christmas and Kelly Flynn said they had spent about 8 hours dusting cleaning scrubbing and arranging their room We ve been working since 1600 yesterday Christmas said Midshipman 1st Class Bull said that for the plebes the Command inspection was the culmination of everything they have learned since indoctrination For Midshipman 1st Class Shawn Wehking

  • USMMA Community Remembers CAPT Baumgart | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    colleagues the Chief Engineer that every deck officer would want to sail with The service closed with a final muster a rile salute from the USMMA Drill Team and the playing of taps In addition to the eulogies at the service in recent days CAPT Baumgart was remembered by colleagues midshipmen and alumni Superintendent Rear Admiral James A Helis said CAPT Baumgart was a treasured and respected member of the Academy who will be greatly missed by our Kings Point community For over ten years he served the Academy with distinction educating thousands of future Merchant Marine officers His lifetime of service created a lasting legacy in the U S Merchant Marine Professor Baumgart s service and dedication to duty truly exemplify the Kings Point Motto Acta non Verba Deeds not Words said Deputy Maritime Administrator Michael J Rodriguez His memory will continue to bring strength and comfort to the U S Merchant Marine Academy and to all of us who were fortunate enough to know him CAPT Baumgart was fondly remembered by his students Mary Silk 15 recalled He taught the system engineers tanker class out of the kindness of his heart even though that meant being at Kings Point at 7 45 am on a Friday morning when it could have been an off day for him No matter how much we hated having a Friday morning first and second period of tankers class he always was there for us with his huge Jets coffee cup that he had to refill half way through class Midshipman Alexander Hughes 2 C noted CAPT Baumgart was more than just a professor he was an incredible mentor to the midshipmen in the Kings Point Family He devoted a great deal of time and energy to bettering each and every individual Kings Point has suffered a tremendous loss and my thoughts and condolences go out to CAPT Baumgart s family and friends His colleague CAPT Brian Hall USMS remembered CAPT Baumgart as a consummate professional who was a respected marine engineer a dedicated professor and a great friend CAPT David Palmer USMA noted Elly Baumgart will be remembered by me as an Avid Sports Fan a Professor of Engineering a Chief Engineer an STCW Expert and just a truly wonderful individual Most of all I will remember Elly as having the great capability and gift of balancing his work life with working hard for our Academy while taking the time to celebrate life talking with colleagues about the lighter things in life such as the outcome of a NY Jets football game or the next sporting event that he planned on attending This awesome balance put his colleagues at ease and spread happiness in the work place while still gathering the energy to work hard for the success of Kings Point Elly could be counted on no matter what was asked of him and he did it with precision and professionalism There is no doubt that I learned a lot from Elly

    of the Mobile Landing Platform MLP As part of their Sea Year Deck Cadet Leighton Joshua Flores Engine Cadet Patricia Ormond and Engine Cadet Brandy Richter have the unique opportunity to serve on the USNS Lewis B Puller This unique AFSB vessel is optimized to support a variety of maritime based missions with an added flight deck berthing fuel storage equipment storage and repair spaces This ship represents a leap forward in flexible capability for the U S Navy said Capt Henry Stevens Strategic and Theater Sealift program manager for Program Executive Office PEO Ships MLPs are highly flexible platforms that provide logistics movement from sea to shore supporting a broad range of military operations The AFSB variant is designed around four core capabilities aviation berthing equipment staging area and command and control The MLP AFSB will primarily support Aviation Mine Countermeasure and Special Operations missions Additional features include a large flight deck and hangar with two aviation operating spots capable of handling MH 53E equivalent helicopters berthing and messing accommodations work spaces and ordnance storage for embarked forces enhanced command control communications computers and intelligence C4I to support embarked force mission planning and execution and reconfigurable mission deck area

  • Midshipmen Acknowledged for Excellence in the Classroom and at Sea | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    Rear Adm Sue Dunlap USMS and Director of the Academic Center for Excellence Lt Cmdr Paul D Acquaro USMS were joined by United States Merchant Marine Academy USMMA and staff to congratulate 231 midshipmen for their outstanding efforts in the classroom and at sea Midshipmen were awarded Academic Gold and Silver Stars for Third Term Academic Year 2015 that recognize their accomplishments A Gold Star signifies QPA of at least 3 50 with no course failures in the term and a Silver Star signifies a QPA of at least 3 25 up to and including 3 49 with no course failures in the term The full list of recipients is available by clicking 2015 Third Term Academic Stars In addition to academic awards the Head of the Department of Professional Development and Career Services Capt Gene Albert USMS distributed Sea Year Ribbons to midshipmen who excelled during their Sea Year The full list of the members of the class of 2016 B split and the Class of 2017 A Split Sea Year Ribbon recipients is accessible by clicking 2015 Sea Year Ribbons Congratulations to all of the Midshipmen who have achieved these honors said Acquaro Keep up the good work

    first step toward becoming future leaders and licensed merchant marine officers After administering the oath to the newest Navy reservists Rear Admiral Whitney discussed the leadership challenges they will face There are two key parts to trust that every leader must have positional and earned He told the plebes that as graduates of the Merchant Marine Academy they will have a definite advantage by the experiences they will have through their time here He told them You will earn trust by being true to the leadership tenant of never expecting anybody to do something you haven t done yourself He closed his remarks by saying that the nation is waiting on their strong leadership now and in the future serving in the Merchant Marine or Navy Rear Admiral Helis said We were honored to have Rear Admiral Whitney as our Reviewing Officer As a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy and as a career Navy officer knows the unique challenges and exciting opportunities that await the Class of 2019 said Helis Having Rear Admiral Whitney welcome them aboard is especially meaningful as they begin their service careers Following the ceremony the new Plebes joined the Regiment of Midshipmen and marched past the Reviewing Officer Rear Admiral Whitney who was joined by Maritime Administrator Paul N Jaenichen Rear Admiral Helis and the Acting Commandant of Midshipmen Captain Bob DeStafney The Academy is the only federal service academy where graduates earn three graduation credentials a Bachelor of Science Degree an Officer s commission in any branch of the military and a U S Coast Guard USCG license as a Deck or Engineering Officer In preparation for USCG license exams each midshipman will spend a minimum of 300 days at sea aboard U S flagged vessels involved in global trade or military operations As
