  • USMMA Advisory Board Presents 2015 Annual Report to Congressional Board of Visitors | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    N Y August 4 2015 Last Wednesday the United States Merchant Marine Academy Advisory Board presented their 2015 Annual Report to the Secretary of Transportation to the Academy s Congressional Board of Visitors at the Capital Visitors Center in Washington D C USMMA Advisory Board serves as an independent body whose purpose is to examine the course of instruction and management at the Academy and advise the USMMA Superintendent Maritime Administrator and U S Secretary of Transportation to ensure the best possible educational environment for all midshipmen Advisory Board members are selected by the Secretary of Transportation to review the implementation of the Academy s strategic plan as well as the Academy s fiscal soundness curriculum morale and campus climate student life diversity and facilities By statute Advisory Board members must be individuals distinguished in education and fields related to the Academy s mission This year s report provides a progress update on the 2014 directives and those concerns not addressed in the previous annual report The report is available by clicking 2015 Annual Report to the Secretary of Transportation Prepared by the U S Merchant Marine Advisory Board in the Related Docments section of this page Updated Wednesday August

  • Maureen "Mo" White Named USMMA Athletic Director | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    of the department s staff budget and facilities usage She will also oversee the physical education curriculum for all Midshipmen at the Academy as well as USMMA s 18 NCAA Division III varsity programs club level athletic programs and other intramural programs White comes to USMMA after spending the past 18 years at Mitchell College in New London Conn where she had served as the Director of Athletics since 2004 She oversaw the transition of Mitchell College Athletics from the junior college level to NCAA Division III Since becoming a full fledged DIII member in 2009 the Mariners have won 12 NECC Championships and qualified for the NCAA National Championship in the sports of women s soccer men s basketball and baseball In 2014 Mitchell Athletics captured the NECC Director s Cup for the top athletic program White also served in various leadership capacities for the New England Collegiate Conference filling the roles of Chair Elect Treasurer Senior Women s Administrator and Chair of the NECC Strategic Planning Committee She also served as the sport chair for men s and women s tennis men s soccer softball and men s golf White began her career at Mitchell in 1998 as an adjunct professor and head coach of the men s tennis team During her tenure as men s tennis coach Mitchell captured six NJCAA Region 21 Championships and made six appearances in the NJCAA Men s National Tennis Championships White was honored as the Region 21 Coach of the Year for five consecutive years and coached four NJCAA All Americans In 2003 White was named Department Chair of the Sport Management program at Mitchell College and also served as Faculty Athletics Representative for the department of athletics She was elevated to the Director of Athletics position on an interim basis

  • USMMA Plebe Candidates Take Honor Oath | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    of an honor violation is judged by nine person jury comprised of five classmates and four midshipmen officers Captain Reed Bonadonna Ph D Director of Ethics explained Honor is a matter of shared values among peers The Academy Honor System reflects this by giving the midshipmen considerable responsibility and authority in the honor process probably more than they exercise in any other aspect of Academy life The injunction of the Honor Code is meant to be an introduction to the larger ethical and professional obligations that they will assume as graduates Regimental Honor Board Vice Chairman Midshipman Woodrow Buck First Class administered the Honor Oath to each plebe candidate who avowed I do solemnly swear or affirm to live by the honor code of the United States Merchant Marine Academy which states that A midshipman will not lie cheat or steal I understand that the Honor Code must be upheld by each member of the Regiment at all times I vow to live by and uphold the code in all my actions whether on Academy grounds or away Honor is at the foundation of this Academy deeply imbedded into its history I faithfully pledge from this point forward to define my life s course by honor So help me God As a reminder of their commitment Midshipman Buck gave each plebe candidate a USMMA Honor Coin These honor coins were handed out to the candidates of the Class of 2019 not as a reward for completing the honor education of their indoctrination but as a challenge to live up to the standards of the midshipmen who have come before them many of whom have given their lives for our nation said Midshipman Buck These honor coins are a reminder to live with integrity from within to show courage in their

    marine transportation and defense needs in peace and war Academy leadership faculty and staff are renowned for their commitment to this mission and also for going beyond this mission to increase the quality of life for all Americans This commitment is on full display through USMMA s ongoing involvement with the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind Since 2006 Kings Pointers have participated in the foundation s Guide Dog Raising Program Each year two midshipmen are selected to raise loving service dogs to aid visually impaired Americans in their everyday lives Alongside their studies and training the midshipmen diligently train and care for a 5 7 week old puppy until it becomes 12 to 18 months old Following this they return the dog to the foundation to begin its new career as a guide dog Two Kings Pointers with service animals in training We at the Maritime Administration MARAD are incredibly proud of USMMA s work with the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind Their service is the perfect embodiment of the spirit behind the Americans with Disabilities Act which turns 25 years old this month Also as an academy operated by the U S Department of Transportation USMMA is directly supporting our department and administration wide goal of enhancing the transportation and employment of Americans with disabilities This is a calling we take to heart at DOT As Secretary Foxx said Ensuring diversity enables individuals with disabilities to have access to jobs school medical care and a better quality of life That s why this Department continues working to require that all transportation providers make reasonable policy practice and procedure modifications to avoid discrimination and ensure programs and services are accessible to individuals with disabilities Updated Monday July 20 2015 Midshipmen trainers and their dogs Midshipman Gus Sawicki of

    rigorous 20 day regimen of academic military and physical training known as Indoctrination which will transform them from recent high school graduates into future leaders and licensed maritime officers The members of this incoming class represent some of our nation s best and brightest with almost a third having graduated in the top 10 of their class said Rear Admiral James A Helis Superintendent Noting that female enrollment for was at a record 20 he said We are very pleased that so many young women are bringing their talents and experiences to the Regiment of Midshipmen During their first day of Indoctrination also known as INDOC plebe candidates were issued uniforms received their first regulation haircut and formed on Barney Square as companies for the first time During formation the Deputy Maritime Administrator Michael Rodriguez greeted the candidates and their families Rodriguez said There are a number of challenges that face our country many of which we may not even see They the Class of 2019 will be expected to come up with solutions to technical issues operational issues and policy issues I m looking forward to the outcome of their work Upon graduation USMMA midshipman will receive a Bachelor

  • Maritime Administrator Delivers USMMA's 79th Commencment Address | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    a crowd of more than 2 200 including graduates family members and representatives from the federal government U S military and maritime industry You have the Maritime Administration s gratitude for the sworn oaths you will soon make and for the responsibilities you have prepared yourselves to accept said Jaenichen You have been provided the basics here and a torch of leadership is being handed to you today Each congressionally nominated graduate received a Bachelor of Science Degree and an unlimited merchant marine officer license from the United States Coast Guard USCG and an Officer s Commission in the U S Navy or other branch of the military In exchange for their education each has the option of serving as a Merchant Marine Officer while concurrently serving in any branch of the U S military in the reserves or serving five years of active duty USMMA graduates ensure a steady stream of merchant marine officers who support the nation s economic and security requirements in times of peace and war This year s graduates represent 39 states the District of Columbia and the three foreign countries Republic Korea Republic of Panama and Malaysia For over seventy years the Academy has developed outstanding leaders who serve in the Merchant Marine military and their communities said Superintendent Rear Admiral James A Helis I am especially proud of these new officers who join the ranks of Kings Pointers currently serving all around the globe As part of the commencement exercises 42 graduates were sworn in as Active Duty Officers in the Navy USCG Army and Air Force Two graduates will be sworn in as Marines at a later date One graduate was sworn into the Army reserves and another in the Air Force Reserves The remaining graduates will serve as Navy reservists in
