  • USMMA Midshipmen Join the Fight Against Childhood Cancers | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    this event has been offered to the entire regiment Teams included Class of 2014 Shoppers Class of 2013 Band Company 1 st Company Plebes and USMMA Football Captain Jay Kennedy commandant of midshipmen stated We teach midshipmen that being part of a service academy means service to the nation the community and the institution This event fits in exactly with what we espouse here One of the highlights of the day was when a guest of honor seven year old Mighty Mikey shaved Head Football Coach Mike Toop s hair Mikey who was adopted by USMMA football team four years ago continues to inspire his teammates who patiently waited in line to get their heads shaved Today was what Kings Pointers are all about Midshipmen Tapper did a tremendous job organizing and the regiment stepped up to support a great cause Mikey has had a tremendous affect on all of his teammates and anytime we have the opportunity to spend time with him it s inspiring It s humbling to be around Mikey and his family knowing the daily hurdles placed in their path He s an inspiration to all of us said Toop The day was made a little sweeter through the efforts of the USMMA parents of Cookie Café a non profit group that provides weekly treats to midshipmen and service men and women who are far from home For this event we really wanted to do something special to support the cure for childhood cancer so we added pies and cakes to the home baked goodies made with lots of love for the midshipmen and alumni serving our country We hope it helped with the big turnout for the event said Martha McCann St Baldrick s Foundation was started in 2000 by a small group of businessmen

  • Midshipman Holtzworth Presents Winning Paper at Connecticut Maritime Association's "Shipping 2013" Conference | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    Connecticut Maritime Association s annual Trade Show and Conference Shipping 2013 Holtzworth a First Classman and President of the Kings Point Sustainability Alliance was given a cash award and the opportunity to present his paper to an international audience that included industry professionals and students His paper outlined a proposal where Ore Bulk Oil carriers OBOs could triangulate trade routes allowing them to complete fewer annual voyages than single trade vessels As a result Holtzworth stated In the oil trades an OBO s supply contribution would be 13 less than the equivalent sized tanker Even more impressive a 24 reduction in capacity impact could be found in this dry bulk trade Owners operating these new ECO OBOs would be reaping the benefits of optimized fuel efficiency and increased laden time without the full impact on supply that comes with a newbuild single trade vessel RADM James A Helis Ph D superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy USMMA commented The Academy strives to be on the cutting edge of technology and innovation We are especially proud when innovative ideas come from midshipmen To be recognized during a prestigious event such as Shipping 2013 is quite an honor for Midshipman Holtzworth and the Academy Holtzworth s Academic Advisor Changqian Guan Ph D an associate professor in USMMA s Department of Marine Transportation explained His idea is quite unconventional the OBO type of ship was popular for a while before it was out of favor due to changes in trade patterns and some operational complexities to run this type of vessel His paper is focused on out of the box thinking This demonstrates his intellectual capacity and analytical skills to challenge the status quo and conventional way of thinking Other Midshipmen who participated were Kristen Bell The Expansion of the U

  • USMMA's Captain George E. Edenfield appointed to serve on Merchant Marine Personnel Advisory Committee | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    merchant marine The committee advises the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security through the Commandant and U S Coast Guard on matters of quality skill level and credentialing of seamen in the merchant marine I am very proud that Capt Edenfield will have a voice on such an important federal committee said Rear Admiral Helis Ph D superintendent of the U S Merchant Marine Academy By sharing his expertise he will make a significant contribution toward the education and training of countless professional mariners resulting in safer and more efficient navigation today and in the future Edenfield is currently the head of the Department of Marine Transportation at the Academy at USMMA and has over thirty years of experience in all facets of the maritime industry both ashore and afloat Edenfield began his career as a deck officer after graduating from the USMMA in 1979 before assuming shore side management positions with Prudential Lines Inc and Maritime Overseas Corporation In 1990 he returned to sea and sailed with OSG Bulk Ships and Sabine Transportation Company in deck officer positions up through Master In 2003 he joined the faculty at the Academy Edenfield has continued to sail actively during more
