  • The United States Merchant Marine Academy Announces 2013 Commencement Speaker | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    on Monday June 17 2013 USTRANSCOM is the single manager for global air land and sea transportation for the Department of Defense Composed of three component and two subordinate commands USTRANSCOM skillfully coordinates transportation missions and provides enabling capabilities worldwide USTRANSCOM provides unsurpassed logistics capability to the United States through its management of people trucks trains railcars aircraft ships information systems and infrastructure General Fraser has extensive wartime contingency and humanitarian relief operational experience During Operation Enduring Freedom he led an intelligence fusion organization that provided direct support to the warfighter Prior to assuming his current position Fraser was the assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and served as Commander Air Combat Command Langley Air Force Base Va and as Air Component Commander for U S Joint Forces Command where he led over 130 000 Total Force Airmen It is my honor to address the graduates of the Merchant Marine Academy The graduates of this academy have an outstanding reputation in all branches of military service and our civilian U S flagged commercial fleet which we at USTRANSCOM rely on in accomplishing our global mission said Fraser The United States Merchant Marine Academy is honored to have General Fraser as our commencement speaker He epitomizes the ideals of our Academy He is an outstanding role model for our graduates who are about to embark on a lifetime of service and leadership said Rear Admiral James A Helis superintendent USMMA is a federal service academy that educates and graduates licensed merchant mariners and leaders of exemplary character who serve America s marine transportation and defense needs in peace and war With 95 percent of the world s products transported over water these leaders are vital to the effective operation of our merchant fleet for both commercial and

  • USMMA Celebrates Midshipman Appreciation Day | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    Day KINGS POINT N Y May 8 2013 On Wednesday the United States Merchant Marine Academy USMMA celebrated Midshipman Appreciation Day In spite of the rainy weather the event which was hosted by the Midshipman Council and supported by the Commandant of Midshipman was a huge success The annual event offered a reprieve from regimental activities and focused on fun We appreciate and value our Midshipmen for all four years they attend the Academy said Rear Admiral James A Helis Superintendent But Midshipman Appreciation Day enables us to show the Midshipmen that we recognize their dedication to excellence and commitment to service by providing them with an evening of fun and relaxation About 600 midshipman participated joined by faculty and staff They enjoyed live music carnival food and many activities Highlights included a hot dog eating contest inflatable Olympic obstacle course and a live musical performance by the all midshipman band Pass in Review The midshipmen truly enjoyed the day The band was really good said Midshipman Emily Olsen It was a great way for us to get together and get away from the stress of our studies Updated Thursday May 16 2013 Contact Us External Affairs 300 Steamboat Road

  • USMMA and American Merchant Marine Museum Celebrate National Maritime Day | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    were lost during Super Storm Sandy The tree was dedicated in memory of Margaret Corbin a role model for equality in military service They chose the site at USMMA due to the Academy s history as the first federal academy to admit women in 1974 and its exemplary support of women s equality in military service Following the tree dedication the American Merchant Marine Museum unveiled a new exhibit from the Seamen s Church Institute entitled Sermons to Sea Land The Seamen s Church Institute and the Port of New York along with items from its own collection The museum also announced a series of new acquisitions including a new book publication by the late Herman E Rosen 44 Gallant Ship Brave Men The Heroic Story of a WWII Liberty Ship that recounts a USMMA cadet midshipman s first hand experience of being torpedoed and spending 30 days in an open lifeboat Dr Joshua M Smith Ph D Associate Professor and Head Department of Humanities said Maritime Day is the perfect occasion to celebrate the role of the American Merchant Marine in this nation s history The American Merchant Marine Museum is taking this opportunity to celebrate the lives of mariners by announcing a new edition of a memoir of the war at sea in World War II called Gallant Ship Brave Men and by opening a new exhibit that explores the contributions of one of America s oldest maritime institutions the Seamen s Church Institute and its role in fostering the rise of the Port of New York Academy leadership faculty staff and midshipmen participated several other events related to of National Maritime Day Rear Admiral James A Helis represented the Academy at a ceremony held in Washington D C and last Saturday the Academy s training vessel the

  • U.S. Transportation Secretary LaHood Names U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Advisory Board | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    Administrator to ensure the best possible educational atmosphere for all midshipmen The Department is committed to providing every midshipman at Kings Point the highest quality education possible said Secretary LaHood This board will help the Academy achieve its strategic plan goals Their experience and expertise will further its mission to educate and graduate the best qualified merchant mariners who will be the future leaders in the global maritime industry The Board will advise the Academy s Superintendent on academic organizational and institutional best practices Its members selected by the Secretary of Transportation will also review the implementation of the Academy s strategic plan as well as the Academy s fiscal soundness curriculum morale and campus climate student life diversity and facilities Kings Point graduates go on to careers in global transportation said USMMA Superintendent RADM James Helis Ph D It is essential that we have an Advisory Board that helps the Academy stay current on maritime industry trends and educational best practices I look forward to working with the members of the Board By statute Advisory Board members must be individuals distinguished in education and fields related to the Academy s mission In appointing new members to the Advisory Board the Department sought candidates with expertise in areas related to the Academy s strategic plan academic excellence leadership development and current maritime industry needs and trends The seven Advisory Board members are appointed for not more than three years and must include one graduate from the Academy within the past six to 10 years The new members are Dr Sharon van Wyk Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer American Public University System Dr Kathy Humphrey Vice Provost and Dean of Students University of Pittsburgh Dr Laurie Leshin Dean of the School of Science Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Mr Marty Linsky

  • United States Merchant Marine Academy Construction Updates | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    at Mallory Pier have been installed allowing contractors to enter the next phase of construction which includes dismantling the wooden pier and replacing it by laying pre cast pier decking on the piles The campus electrical survey is complete and the Academy is awaiting recommendations of an energy savings study which will allow contractors to design upgrades the campus electric grid and power supply The upgrades will improve energy efficiency and reliability of electric service across the campus The two projects that will have a the most significant impact on midshipman life will be completed in time for the 2013 2014 Academic year They include upgrades to Rogers and Delano Hall Rogers Hall which is the fifth of the six barracks to be upgraded will have central air upgraded First Class study lounges and improved living spaces Delano Hall the Academy mess hall which already has a new roof will have upgraded safety and kitchen equipment and entirely new serving area The Delano Hall renovation will increase energy efficiency enhance safe food preparation and promote the overall well being of students and staff The there are several other projects on the horizon including the renovation of Cleveland Hall You are

  • Academy to Benefit from Generous Alumni Gifts | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    already provided by the academy Examples of such activities include sending Midshipmen to professional conferences arranging for presentations by distinguished marine professional speakers and providing courses on the essentials of leadership With the recent announcement of the Academy s Margin of Excellence Needs List 2013 the academy has already received several additional gifts In February the USMMA Alumni Chesapeake Chapter donated 5 000 This gift will be used to enhance the Academy s Alcohol and Drug Education Program Several other generous gifts were received prior to the publication of the needs list These alumni gifts will play a key role in the implementation of our strategic plan said Rear Admiral James A Helis Ph D superintendent of the USMMA We are tremendously grateful for our alumni s generosity In January Helis accepted a gift of 8 000 on behalf of the academy from an alumni chapter in Mobile Alabama and in July 2012 the Academy received 102 000 from the Robert J and Irma S Radcliffe Estate This was in addition to an initial gift of 250 000 that was received from the Radcliffe Estate in March of 2012 to support the academic endeavors of the Engineering Department Captain William Sembler Head of the Department of Marine Engineering explained The gift money from the Radcliffe estate will be used to purchase and install two different types of oily water separators that are certified to meet the latest international regulations They will be installed with associated tanks and equipment in a dedicated container that will be located in the McCready Steam Laboratory in Fulton Hall The addition of these oily water separators to the Academy s engineering laboratories will enable midshipmen to receive hands on training in the operation and maintenance of equipment that is required on all ships and that
