  • USMMA Midshipman Selected for NSF Green Chemistry Travel Scholarship | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    in Washington He will also attend an all day student workshop on Monday June 17 th The conference and the workshop are sponsored by the American Chemical Society ACS Green Chemistry Institute Midshipman Flanagan was selected from a large and highly competitive pool of applicants with outstanding qualifications in this year s NSF Scholars Program Selection was based on student application college transcript two one page essays and a faculty s recommendation letter A student membership of the ACS is also required Midshipman Flanagan wrote excellent essays said Dr Ping Furlan a math and science professor who encouraged Midshipman Flanagan to apply Clearly the four months sea experience and two years of USMMA academics have allowed Midshipman Flanagan to gain an understanding of the shipping industry and the importance of preserving and protecting our environment through greener ship designs greener energy and greener practices Furlan continued Midshipman Flanagan will hopefully carry his interest in green chemistry and green engineering beyond this conference and into the future as a maritime or military officer Midshipman Flanagan is from West Chester Penn and was nominated to the U S Merchant Marine Academy by Congressman Joe Sestak Updated Thursday June 13 2013 Midshipman Flanagan

    its graduates said Secretary LaHood These young men and women are now prepared to support our nation s economic and national security on the waterways This Administration remains committed to equipping all who come here with the tools and training needed for a long and fulfilling career as merchant mariners The congressionally nominated graduates received a Bachelor of Science Degree and government issued merchant marine officer license that will help ensure a steady stream of merchant marine officers to support the nation s economic and security interests True leaders are built on integrity you must always maintain the courage of your convictions Built on that integrity you must maintain your desire your discipline your commitment and your willingness to make sacrifices said Fraser We recognize the great opportunity for positive change you will lead As I look upon this audience I know we are in good hands This year s graduates represent 37 states and the four foreign countries of South Korea Malaysia Republic of Panama and Singapore USMMA graduates have the option of working in the seagoing merchant marine and transportation industry while enlisting in any armed force reserve unit or applying for active duty for five years For over seven decades the Academy has trained the next generation of leaders for careers at sea instilling in them the character to become leaders in the maritime industry the military and their communities said Rear Admiral James A Helis Ph D superintendent at the U S Merchant Marine Academy I am especially proud of these new maritime leaders knowing they will be able to transform any challenge to a triumph as they embark on a lifetime of service Based on Academy estimates 49 of the Class of 2013 graduates will serve as officers in active military duty and 141 will

  • Alumni Mentor Midshipmen While Preparing USMMA's New Training Vessel | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    many stakeholders including midshipmen faculty alumni and industry asked us to include an opportunity for Dynamic Positioning training said Superintendent Rear Admiral James A Helis PhD The new T V Kings Pointer brings the Academy a step closer to reaching this goal Commander Chris Gasiorek Sailing Master and Director of Waterfront Operations and Training said Work continues on the T V Kings Pointer to bring it into compliance with U S Coast Guard rules for training ships and to improve the vessel s training utility Recent work has included sea trials to ensure that all dry dock work was completed properly as well as a two hour dynamic positioning trial for the American Bureau of Shipping This successful test ensures that our students will be able to receive credit towards Dynamic Positioning certification Although the ship is away from Kings Point she has not been far from Kings Pointers as Naval Reservists and Midshipmen Cadets work side by side to prepare the ship for her new mission Assisting on these underway tests were Captain Bren Wade Class of 1987 and Mike Burbelo Class of 2010 Burbelo who serves as mate and relief captain for Otto Candies said I think the new training vessel will offer even more learning opportunities than the previous one The majority of the workforce now revolves around brown water shipping and supporting the energy sector It seems to me that the new training vessel will really help bridge the gap between classroom training and most workforce operations The fact that the new vessel has Dynamic Positioning will put future midshipmen at a huge advantage The majority of the boats down here in the Gulf are similar in size to the Kings Pointer and maneuvering is much like driving around a crowded parking lot If the midshipmen

    18 day regimen of academic military and physical training known as Indoctrination INDOC their first step toward becoming future leaders and licensed maritime officers The new plebe candidates make up one of the most diverse classes in Academy history said Rear Admiral James A Helis Ph D superintendent at the U S Merchant Marine Academy I look forward to seeing entire Class of 2017 learn grow and serve their country During their first day of INDOC plebe candidates received their first berthing assignments were issued uniforms received their first military haircut and learned to salute in their first official formation Upon graduation Midshipman receive a Bachelor of Science Degree and government issued merchant marine officer license that will help ensure a steady stream of U S merchant marine officers to support the nation s economic and security interests Kings Point graduates must serve five years on active duty in the military or work in the maritime industry for five years as well as eight years in the reserves The U S Merchant Marine Academy located in Kings Point N Y educates and graduates merchant mariners and leaders of exemplary character who will serve America s maritime transportation and defense needs

  • USMMA's Class of 2017 Arrives for Indoctrination | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    were getting their first military haircut and changing into PT gear their parents attended a briefing by the Rear Admiral James A Helis Ph D Superintendent Captain Jay Kennedy Commandant of Midshipmen and Dr Shashi Kumar PhD Academic Dean Each member of the Administration congratulated the parents on the outstanding job they did raising their children and getting them to this point Captain Kennedy explained how the indoctrination process will take a high school graduate and get him or her ready to be a midshipman at Kings Point He reassured parents lightheartedly saying Don t worry We know what we re doing Rear Admiral James A Helis Ph D Superintendent a proud parent of a West Point graduate and a current USMMA Midshipman gave parents encouragement He said Let them struggle it is part of becoming a leader They will come through it fine They will learn to overcome adversity They will grow through it Over four years they will develop into future leaders for our nation Later that morning Helis addressed the class for the first time saying You would not be here today if you did not have what it takes to get through Your appointment to Kings

  • Change in USMMA Class of 2014 Graduation Date | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    2014 will now take place on Saturday June 21 2014 instead of Monday June 23 As it has for many years the awards convocation will still be held on the Friday morning prior to graduation The schedule revision would add the Change of Command ceremony on Friday afternoon with the June Ball on Friday evening We anticipate that the Baccalaureate Service previously held on Sunday morning will be scheduled for Thursday evening This condensed schedule will retain all of our traditional graduation events and should significantly ease the burden of paying for costly accommodations in the New York area for families and other guests We wanted to announce this change as soon as possible since parents and other members of the Academy community will be planning ahead for the 2014 graduation said Rear Admiral Helis Ph D superintendent of the U S Merchant Marine Academy The Academy staff is planning a Class of 2014 Commencement weekend that I know will exceed your expectations New Graduation Schedule 2014 Thursday June 19 Baccalaureate Service Friday June 20 Awards Convocation Change of Command June Ball Saturday June 21 Graduation The traditional cruise on New York Harbor will be scheduled per the desires of

    guests register to attend Parents Weekend and pre purchase their meal tickets for the weekend Please fill out the registration form indicating the number of meals needed calculate your total meal costs and write a check for your pre paid meals to the Regimental Affairs NAFI Mail your check and registration form to the U S Merchant Marine Academy no later than August 15 2013 The one exception is Sunday brunch with your son or daughter at Delano Hall Payment for the meal will be made at the Delano Hall reception table before you enter We regret that our caterer is no longer able to accept meal reservations for parents weekend You are welcome to bring food on campus Do midshipmen have to pay for their meals Midshipmen do not have to pay for regular meals in Delano Hall Please see specific instructions listed by day Friday Midshipmen do not pay for lunch or dinner and must eat with the Regiment of Midshipmen after eating they may join their family members who choose not to eat in Delano Hall Family members may join midshipmen during the Regimental Dinner optional on Friday ONLY but must register and pay in advance Payment must be received by 15 August Saturday Midshipmen may eat regular lunch at Delano Hall but families are NOT permitted However Midshipmen MAY join their families for a boxed lunch at Land Hall Tent but they MUST PRE REGISTER AND PAY BY 15 AUGUST Sunday Anyone including midshipmen who attends brunch may pay at the door When should I arrive Parents family and other guests usually arrive on Friday or Saturday from 0700 to 1300 as their schedule permits Will there be golf carts available for family members requiring assistance Yes but this service will be limited What do we

  • USMMA Celebrates the New Academic Year | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    textbooks and schedules at the starting line of an endurance race Recognize where you stand today the starting line the beginning of a competition against yourself but surrounded by a community that is devoted to your success Then Admiral Dunlap shared a video that highlighted significant events of the 2012 2013 Academic Year The video was warmly received by an energetic and enthusiastic audience that at times made the auditorium feel like a pep rally Midshipman laughed as they recalled some of the wonderful memories they shared at USMMA and plebe candidates envisioned the many experiences they can look forward to At that point Admiral Helis addressed the entire Academy community saying Today we mark the start of a new year Before we look forward to what is ahead let s take a moment to recall some of the highlights of the past year It was a great year for Kings Point on many fronts We saw important progress on the Academy s infrastructure We started a multi stage process to completely refurbish Delano Hall s original kitchen We renovated the soon to be reopened Rodgers Hall And the replacement of Mallory Pier got underway These multi million dollar projects are evidence of the government s continuing commitment modernizing Kings Point s facilities Kings Point was the first academy to receive Coast Guard approval for a revised curriculum that incorporates the new STCW requirements for Coast Guard licensing Our Dean and faculty deserve congratulations for bringing this complex effort to a successful and timely conclusion But more importantly the Regiment of Midshipmen excelled in academics in athletics in leadership Helis added Our greatest achievement last year the graduation of over 200 leaders of exemplary character who received their degrees their Coast Guard licenses and their officers commissions who are now
