  • U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Celebrates Reopening of Rogers Hall | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    were welcomed by the Regimental Band s Fanfare Trumpets who were then followed by a greeting from Rear Admiral James A Helis PhD Superintendent Helis thanked those who played a role in the barrack s completion including the Capital Improvement team engineers administrators and the contractor Kallidus Technologies Inc The new barracks ensure a safe comfortable and welcoming environment for the Regiment of Midshipmen said Helis Then Helis was joined by Rear Admiral Susan L Dunlap Deputy Superintendent Captain Bob DeStafney Deputy Commandant of Midshipmen Regimental Commander Midshipman Captain Kevin Berto and representatives of Band Company LTJG Ashleigh Phillips Midshipman Graham Ucchino and Regimental Bandmaster MIDN LT Trevor M Ball who cut a ceremonial red white and blue ribbon Rogers Hall which is home to Band Company and the Regimental Staff has been transformed over the past year The building has new floor mounted heat pump air conditioning and heating wall partitions with reduced sound transmission impact resistant gypsum board new plumbing a new fire protection system throughout the building to include smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and each two person dormitory room has new furniture layouts The Rogers Hall renovation cost approximately 10 4 million dollars and is part of the overall Capital Improvement plan After the ribbon cutting ceremony Admiral Helis invited everyone to join the Regimental Staff during Command Inspection and to tour their new home Rogers Hall is named in honor of Captain Moses Rogers 1779 1821 who had his first command at age 21 on Long Island Sound Seeing the advantages of steamships he became the Master of the PHOENIX which was the first vessel to make an offshore voyage under steam power Among his other firsts was the construction of the engines for and command of the SS SAVANNAH on the first Trans Atlantic

  • "Ehrhardt First Classmen EMS Service Awards" To Be Memorialized | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    Ehrhardt First Classmen EMS Service Award was created to recognize graduating midshipman Emergency Medical Technicians EMT s for outstanding service and accomplishments throughout their tenure at the USMMA This award and recognition to the EMT midshipman and their service to the community is something we are very proud of at the Academy said Helis We encourage meaningful partnerships in the community and appreciate the special donation made by Christian Ehrhardt as well as his active participation with the Academy The 1 000 award is given to one or two graduating midshipmen each year It is funded for 30 years by community resident and leader Ehrhardt a long time resident of Long Island from Manhasset and Great Neck His grandparents were Great Neck residents for over fifty years When his grandfather had a medical crisis at the house Midshipman Patrick Gorman 07 who was part of the USMMA EMT program and a volunteer with Great Neck Vigilant Fire Department responded and saved his life Today Ehrhardt donated a plaque that will be engraved with the award winners names each year and be displayed in Patten Health Clinic the base of the USMMA EMS squad Over the last five years Mr Ehrhardt

  • U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Holds Patriot Day Ceremony | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    the rescue and recovery efforts Over the course of nine days USMMA assets moved in excess of 1 500 firefighters EMT s police officers and other rescue personnel and moved several tons of food water rescue supplies and materiel from locations in Brooklyn and New Jersey to the landing area at North Cove Helis said In the 12 years of war since 9 11 Kings Pointers have served the nation in every theater of conflict as U S Merchant Marine officers moving equipment and supplies for the military and as active duty officers in the Armed Forces Admiral Helis and Midshipman Benjamin Hladick Class of 2016 then unveiled a 9 11 Memorial that was designed and built by Hladick The memorial which incorporates a piece of steel girder from the World Trade Center was presented to USMMA by the Class of 2012 as a commemoration of the services rendered by the Academy on September 11 2001 This memorial will serve as a tribute to the service and sacrifice by our midshipmen faculty staff and graduates who responded on that horrible day in our nation s history said Helis Following the unveiling there was a moment of silence a twenty one gun salute and a trumpeter played taps As part of the Plebe Class spirit mission Plebes wrote every victim s name on Barney Square and Powell Oval and honored them by keeping constant vigil throughout the day The two foot 200 lb piece of steel that is encased in the memorial was obtained through the devoted efforts of the Class of 2012 After the attacks steel beams from the World Trade Center were distributed throughout New York State and the country for families of victims schools fire houses government buildings and private citizens By 2012 only about three steel pieces

    Our vision for the Academy is to be the world leader in maritime education said Rear Admiral James A Helis Ph D superintendent of the U S Merchant Marine Academy We are very proud of this year s rankings as well as our continuing recruitment effort to increase the number of women and minority candidates eligible to enter the regiment and maritime industry The U S Merchant Marine Academy was the first federal service academy to admit women in 1974 The minority percentage of midshipmen has steadily risen each year The Class of 2017 is 23 percent minority compared with 14 4 percent in the Class of 2013 The number of women in the Class of 2013 is the highest in ten years at 16 percent These results are indicative of the outstanding quality hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff said Shashi Kumar Ph D master mariner and academic dean of the Academy With this year s introduction of our new cutting edge curriculum we hope to continue our role as the world leader in maritime education Upon graduation midshipmen receive a Bachelor of Science Degree and government issued merchant marine officer license that will help ensure a steady stream of U S merchant marine officers to support the nation s economic and security interests Kings Point graduates must serve five years on active duty in the military or work in the maritime industry for five years with an eight year commission in any branch of the reserves This year The Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac rated USMMA second for small colleges with the best 6 year graduation rate The U S Merchant Marine Academy has also just been selected as a Public Ivy for 2013 14 by EducatedQuest com one of only 21 U S public
