  • Photo of USMMA Midshipmen Included in New York Museum Exhibit | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    of midshipmen at the United States Merchant Marine Academy USMMA will be included in a special presentation to compliment the exhibition Rising Waters Photographs of Sandy at the Museum of the City of New York The exhibition which marked the anniversary of Superstorm Sandy chronicles the storm its aftermath the relief and recovery It features 500 photos that were chosen out of more than ten thousand submissions by amateur and professional photographers The photo Acta non Verba taken by Veronica Barry Acting Director of USMMA s Office of External Affairs while volunteering on Veterans Day 2012 shows approximately 300 midshipmen being briefed by Kings Point alumnus Captain David Taliaferro 07 of the New York Army National Guard at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn before arriving on the devastated Rockaway peninsula People were completely overcome with emotion when they saw eight busloads of midshipmen arriving in boiler suits volunteering to help said Barry I think that is why the photo was chosen Rear Admiral James A Helis Superintendent said I could not be more proud of our midshipmen their service brings life to our motto Deeds not Words This photo will be a permanent record of the tremendous response by USMMA

  • USMMA Holds Change of Command Ceremony | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    I am ready to be relieved The incoming officer renders a hand salute and says I relieve you Sir This exchange is initiated by each officer to be relieved The outgoing Regimental Commander Midshipman 1 C Kevin Berto was relieved by Midshipman Connor McGowan who takes charge of the Regiment of Midshipmen through the end of the academic year Berto from Lake Forrest Illinois said Serving as Regimental Commander was challenging and even more so rewarding I am grateful for the opportunity to have influenced the development of my peers and underclassmen It was a joy to work with my fellow midshipmen officers and learn from Regimental Training Officer Commander McCarthy Commandant of Midshipmen Captain Kennedy and Superintendent Rear Admiral Helis and the faculty all of whom are generously involved in the Regiment s continued betterment The turnover process in passing command to M N Connor McGowan allowed me to reflect on the obstacles overcome lessons learned and good times had since last May when I accepted command from Midshipman Daniel Galginaitis Midshipman Connor McGowan and I volunteered as drill instructors and it feels right to turn over the position to an enthusiastic and thoughtful leader I know that as Regimental Commander M N CAPT McGowan will thoroughly enjoy the interactions with the midshipmen faculty and alumni The new Regimental Commander Midshipman Captain McGowan of Bath Maine said I m excited and glad to be able to work with the members of the regiment I know we are all capable of operating at a high level of professionalism I look to serving the Regiment of Midshipmen in every capacity that I can Along with the change in Regimental Commander the following First Classmen participated in the Change of Command Ceremony Band Company MIDN LCDR Adam Wood was relieved by MIDN

    public are invited to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy s USMMA upcoming Blood Drive to benefit Long Island Blood Services USMMA hosts three blood drives each year This blood drive takes on critical importance at a time when LI Blood services is experiencing a shortage of blood supplies due recent severe weather in our area Each donation has the potential to save three lives When Tuesday April 8 2014 Where U S Merchant Marine Academy 300 Steamboat Road Kings Point New York Land Hall Time 6 00 to 9 00 pm Open to the public who meet the following e ligibility criteria ID with signature and photo Minimum weight 110 lbs Age 16 75 16 year olds must present written permission from a parent Individuals 76 and over must present a doctor s note Must be well hydrated and have eaten a low fat meal No tattoos for past 12 months Please note Certain donors who have travelled internationally within the last year may not be eligible to donate This will be determined at the time of registration and on a case by case basis depending on where travel took place For additional information regarding eligibility for donation

    invocation by Academy Chaplain Reverend Justin Adour Then Rear Admiral Susan L Dunlap Deputy Superintendent welcomed the assembly She said Dr King wanted to help the poor and the disadvantaged He wanted equal opportunity not just for African Americans but for everyone to have a decent job a home food to eat an education Although Martin Luther King was principally known as the leader of the African American civil rights movement he was a humanitarian above all and for that he belongs to all of us Dunlap then invited the midshipmen to spend the upcoming holiday volunteering You ll not only be living MLK s dream but also fulfilling the motto of the Academy Acta Non Verba She then introduced the guest speaker Ms Amie Carter Ms Carter a graduate of the State University of New York Maritime College holds a U S Coast Guard Third Assistant Engineer s License a Bachelor of Science Degree in Facilities Engineering and is on the Board of Directors at the Organization of Black Maritime Graduates OBMG After sailing with the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association for four years Carter held the position of Senior Engineer at PSEG Nuclear Currently she is a Project Manager

  • USMMA Hosts Successful Blood Drive to Benefit Long Island Blood Services | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    its first blood drive of 2014 USMMA in partnership with Long Island Blood Services hosts three blood drives each year The blood drive was well attended by faculty staff midshipmen parents and members of the local community In total they made 107 donations These individuals are dedicated in their support of the community s blood supply needs said Mr Rick Sager Administrator of the Department of Health Services Emergency Medical Services They are lining up faster than the Blood Drive personnel can respond and despite the cold temperatures recent storms and other deterrents USMMA is moving full steam ahead to provide much needed blood to save lives The blood drive at USMMA took on critical importance because last week s snow storm forced the cancelation of over 35 individual blood drive events across Long Island This resulted in a loss of approximately 1400 units of blood Midshipman Frank Taormina said I am from Long Island As a volunteer fireman with the Merrick Fire Department I have seen many people who needed blood It makes me happy knowing that I am helping people Anyone who missed USMMA s blood drive but would like to donate can call 800 688 0900 Each

  • USMMA to Receive $ 1 Million in Additional Funding from the U.S. Maritime Administration | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    U S Merchant Marine fleet is our people said U S Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx This funding will help ensure that dedicated men and women of our maritime academies continue to have the resources that make them the best educated and most highly trained mariners anywhere The money for this round of funding came from the sale of obsolete vessels for recycling from the Maritime Administration s National Defense Reserve As required by the National Maritime Heritage Act 25 percent of these sales is distributed to maritime academies for facility and training ship maintenance repair and modernization and for the purchase of simulators and fuel 25 percent is provided for maritime heritage activities and 50 percent funds the acquisition maintenance and repair of vessels in the National Defense Reserve Fleet The Maritime Administration continues to focus on the future of our maritime industry said Acting Maritime Administrator Paul Chip Jaenichen We re proud to support the education that prepares the next generation of maritime professionals for the challenges they will face The United States Merchant Marine Academy is one of our nation s five Federal Service Academies All USMMA graduates receive a Bachelor of Science Degree an Officer s Commission

  • Class of 1962 Continues Giving Back to USMMA | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    This is the second installment of an even larger gift which will total 375 000 In 2012 in honor of its 50 th Reunion the Class of 1962 established The Class of 1962 Fund for Midshipmen Professional and Leadership Development At that time they committed at least 75 000 per year over five years to this Fund This recent contribution in addition to the initial installment of 150 000 brings the total donated so far to 200 000 The Fund was created to fund both on and off campus activities for Midshipmen that will enhance the professional and leadership training already provided by the Academy Examples of such activities include sending midshipmen to professional conferences arranging for presentations by distinguished professional speakers and providing courses on the essentials of leadership During 2013 this Fund made it possible for midshipmen to attend the 2013 International Boat Show and The 2013 Annual Meeting of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers SNAME It also funded the printing and distribution of 1 000 copies of The Armed Forces Officer and a contract instructor to teach an elective course in Business English This gift is greatly appreciated by the Academy and more importantly by the Midshipmen that it directly benefits said Rear Admiral James A Helis Superintendent The programs and activities supported by the Fund have been making and will continue to make a significant contribution to the Margin of Excellence we seek for the Academy In addition to their monetary gift the Class of 1962 published a document entitled Fifty Years of Living the Mission as a gift to the Academy and to future generations of Kings Pointers This publication demonstrates how one of the Academy s many graduating classes has achieved the Academy s evolving Mission over the past fifty years
