  • USMMA Professor Lectures on Maritime History at Great Neck Adult Education Center | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    said Irma Wolin Retired Energetic Active People REAP Program Chair Dr Speelman s enthusiasm and knowledge impressed our members and was exhibited by their comments and accolades after the end of the program Calling USMMA Great Neck s Best Kept Secret Speelman lectured on the passage of the Marine Act of 1874 which first established state maritime colleges the Morro Castle disaster of 1934 the establishment in 1938 of U S Merchant Marine Cadet Corps and the eventual dedication in 1943 of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point our nation s first federal Academy dedicated to training Merchant Marine Officers She emphasized the importance of USMMA to our nation s maritime industry and explained how Midshipmen gain that experience not only from curriculum at the Academy but also from the 300 or more days that they spend as cadets aboard commercial and military vessels during their Sea Year Speelman also invited the group to learn more by visiting the Academy and the American Merchant Marine Museum which is located on Academy grounds in the former William Barstow estate Barstow was an electrical engineer who became the first Mayor of Kings Point The Museum is open to the public Tuesday through Friday 10am to 3 pm We welcome visitors from the local community said Rear Admiral Helis Their support has allowed USMMA to successfully educate and graduate licensed merchant mariners and leaders of exemplary character who served America s marine transportation and defense needs for over 70 years Speelman teaches in the Humanities Department and offers courses in Maritime History Naval History and Civil War History She received her B A from the Pennsylvania State University and her M A and Ph D from Temple University in Philadelphia Prior to joining the Humanities Department at Kings Point she

  • USMMA's Acceptance Day Weekend Will Celebrate Plebe Accomplishments | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    enjoy a separate weekend that celebrates their accomplishments The Academy is conducting Acceptance Day in August to formally recognize the completion of the initial indoctrination process for the Class of 2018 and their joining the Regiment of Midshipmen and the US Navy Reserve said CAPT Jay Kennedy Commandant of Midshipmen This special weekend will focus on the Class of 2018 and their families and we hope this will maximize both the parents and Plebes time together and give parents an opportunity to enjoy and learn more about Kings Point The main reason for moving Acceptance Day forward is to standardize training for each incoming class Acceptance Day has typically been tied to the weekend of the first home football game which does not have a standardized date each year Therefore each Plebe class training experience was different The intent of the new schedule is to hold Acceptance Day two weeks after the Regiment reforms for first trimester Moving Acceptance Day to a set time each year provides a fixed schedule which enables the Commandant s staff and Midshipmen Officers to better plan and coordinate Plebe Training The new timeframe also allows more upper class Midshipmen to be involved in the Plebe training sooner During Acceptance Day Weekend the Academy will host several events for the parents of the Class of 2018 beginning on Friday August 8 th On Saturday August 9 th members of the Class of 2018 who are in good standing will be granted overnight liberty following the Acceptance Day Parade Parents Weekend will be held September 19 21 2014 Highlights will include the Ceremony of Beating Retreat on Friday September 19 th and a Regimental Review and home football game on Saturday September 20 th While Acceptance Day is exclusive to the Class of 2018 Plebe parents

    on his outstanding previous leadership experience overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom Operation Enduring Freedom and domestically during Superstorm Sandy Taliaferro credits his Alma Mater saying Up to Superstorm Sandy my experience was primarily with the infantry it is a plus that my degree from Kings Point is in Logistics Taliaferro carries on a long USMMA tradition of leadership and service to our nation USMMA Alumni have served in every conflict since World War II At a pre deployment ceremony at Fort Hamilton on February 22 2014 USMMA Superintendent RADM James Helis an Afghanistan veteran himself spoke to the soldiers and their families RADM Helis told the families their soldiers were as well trained equipped and ready as they could be for the mission He thanked the families for their support saying Your dedication commitment and courage are as important to the mission as that of your soldiers and our nation owes you a debt a gratitude for your sacrifices He reminded the soldiers to stay focused on their mission to take care of each other and wished them a safe return home at the end of their deployment The Quartermaster Supply Company mission normally operates general support supply

  • Adam La Reau, Class of 2002, Receives Light of Leadership Award | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    Farber Boston Children s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center to support children with cancer called One Summit One Summit teams children with a U S Navy SEAL mentor to experience climbing to help build courage and self confidence promoting a foundation for resilience as they battle their disease In the future he hopes to scale and incorporate more military men and women from all the U S Armed Forces The event was held in Delano Hall where the Regiment of Midshipmen wearing their dress uniforms were treated to an elegant dinner After their meal they listened attentively as Mr La Reau spoke about the many influences that brought him to Kings Point and how eventually he pursued his goal to become a Navy SEAL He mentioned the example of his parents as great leaders who always encouraged him to believe that he could and do anything he wanted to do He also mentioned that at a young age he was inspired by the sacrifices of men and women who served to protect our freedoms which motivated him to serve as a Navy SEAL He said During my senior year at the academy on one clear morning our lives changed as did the rest of the world We were in class and told that there was a fire at the World Trade Center A few of us came out of class and saw the second plane fly into the tower on Sept 11 2001 and saw both buildings collapse Here at Kings Point triage centers were set up facilitated movement of police and firefighters to downtown New York City and provided EMTs to help running towards unknown instead of running away from it I was proud of Kings Point truly living by their ethos Acta Non Verba Our country was now

  • Thomas McCaffery to Speak at 2014 Battle Standard Dinner | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
    students and alumni of the U S Merchant Marine Cadet Corps who died during World War II He is President of McCaffery Associates Alexandria Virginia and has been a full member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers since 1990 With the support of his staff he has spent thousands of hours researching and writing the story of the lives of the men in Braving the Wartime Seas For the past fifteen years his business has been researching the history of the U S Navy and Merchant Marine from the 1930 s to the 1970 s As a merchant marine officer he sailed aboard nearly every type of ship that flew an American Flag as a licensed Deck Officer up to and including Chief Mate In 1981 he along with other crew members of the T T Williamsburg was awarded the Maritime Administration s Gallant Ship Unit Citation for their participation in the rescue of the survivors for the M S Prinsendam A retired Navy Commander Mr McCaffery is a graduate of the College of Naval Command and Staff of the U S Naval War College and of Georgetown University s McDonough School of Business In 2006 he received the U S Merchant Marine Academy s Alumni Distinguished Service Award We are honored and excited that Mr McCaffery has accepted the Superintendent s invitation to speak at this year s Battle Standard Dinner He clearly loves this academy and all that it stands for Through Mr McCaffery and his research team we re all going to learn a great deal about the lives of the Cadet Midshipmen who served and sacrificed during the Second World War said CAPT Kennedy The United States Merchant Marine Academy is privileged among the nation s five federal academies to be the only
