  • UT Austin | Adopt-A-Fossil! Become a Guardian of Deep Time Texas
will be uploaded to that system and the adopter will be emailed when their printing is to occur They have the added thrill of being able to follow the process live on line if they wish We encourage individuals classes or groups to adopt one or sets of the fossil specimens and learn the history of those specimens their scientific importance and what they tell us about the environments at that time Each adopter can learn what happens to fossils after they were collected and placed in the collections Everyone will receive a digital image of their fossil and a basic description of what group it represents and when it lived Then depending upon the level of contribution they will receive 3 D prints and other exciting opportunities Schools may request suites of fossils that are common to their specific locations and we shall encourage them to post their own finds on a Google Earth so we can develop a two way scientific dialog with those students We shall provide teachers with a template for the type of data that should be gathered along with any fossil finds their own students make and encourage them to use their own finds as a means to further the scientific and cognitive skills of their students If they are urban schools or those in non fossiliferous areas we shall provide them with data sets from our own collections so these students do not miss out on the experience The Project Goals 1 Generate interest in deep time history especially in Texas and develop a fun way to learn about invertebrate animals that have lived here in the past Some of these animals are long extinct or extirpated moved off to somewhere other than Texas and others profoundly changed through time 2 Provide a way in which all participants can appreciate that the earth is not static environments change over time and organisms respond to that change in a wide variety of ways This is a highly important topic especially in our present state of changing climates 3 Create a broad base of philosophical and financial support for the collections themselves Funding for such vital research collections is highly competitive but such funding is absolutely critical to achieve their long term survival Most of the collections cannot be recollected because it would be either financially prohibitive or physically impossible We cannot go back in time and recollect mussels from 1890 neither can we drain the highland lakes to recollect those pre 1950 s sites or dig up highways and housing developments Thank you for your support you are h elping to preserve our unique record of life in deep time Texas for research and education Follow the project on twitter adoptAFOSSIL After you adopt select and claim your fossil if your favorite is not yet there let us know and we ll make it available for you Learn more about our collections a sample of our Outreach and our type fossils Our way of

  • UT Austin | Build Safe & Sanitary Toilets for a School in Tanzania
serves 900 day students and 70 visually impaired students who board at the school Currently there are not enough latrines at the school to properly serve its continually growing student population Specifically there is currently only one latrine for all 70 of the visually impaired students which includes boys and girls This is critically over capacity for one septic tank system Our team will build a new 10 stall latrine for the visually impaired students including a septic tank that can handle this capacity Our project will include an education component about hygiene and maintenance of the latrines and septic system Help us make a difference You can help us make an impact in these communities while impacting our education We are each paying for our own travel but we need 9 000 to pay for the costs of materials for the latrines and septic tank This means every dollar you donate will go directly to the community and will support our education as professionals and growth as leaders as we design plan for and build this project Plus all donations are tax deductible as donations through this site go directly through The University of Texas at Austin Please note that during the fall semester of 2014 this team of dedicated students had already put in countless hours of hard work towards completing this project when they received devastating news the original sponsor organization had to revoke all of its promised funding due to the downturn in the gas and oil industry making our need for your support even greater Every dollar helps us towards our goal Please make a donation and help our team make an impact in this little corner of the world and spread the word about our project by using the icons at the top of

  • UT Austin | Tracking Monarch Butterflies on Offshore Oil Platforms
headings for both body direction and movement direction ability to upload a picture recording altitude pilots see monarchs The app will provide a new tool for addressing these questions since it can record both these flight vectors movement and body direction very quickly and then capture the weather information at the same time The data is stored until cell signal is restored a valuable function when offshore At least it is valuable if we get sufficient support This is all made possible by the design of the app We are focusing on rapid data acquisition to support both busy offshore citizen scientists as well as for high speed data acquisition for research purposes by dedicated local observers It is a powerful combination Within the space of a few seconds an observer will be able to capture locations time weather flight direction body direction number and behavior A key aspect is that this app can be widely distributed These studies need vast amounts of data and this can only be achieved if dedicated volunteers have suitable tools Like to try the beta version Scroll to the bottom of the page for information Thunderhorse one of the largest rigs in the world being towed to sea in 2006 There s a lot of room for butterflies When completed and distributed the data will show us maps of both body alignment where their compasses are telling them to go as well as their flight vectors where the weather allows them to go This will be coupled to temperature humidity and cloud cover information in a grand presentation across N America It s a bonus for the offshore program as well since observers will be able to report where monarchs head off to in the morning as they ascend from rigs Using the App When we have the app built we will distribute it to offshore oil workers fishermen pilots you name it We would also like citizen scientists to collect data along the Gulf coast so we can match up offshore movements with what is happening along the coast This would best be done using the Journey North app since they have a long record of the fall migration on land that is much larger than what we could collect Even if you can t use our app use theirs Starting with the fall migration in 2015 we will have the first extensive coverage of the entire Gulf of Mexico with concurrent weather information Dr Taylor s program will use observers in organized birdwatching groups as well as other volunteers to record the critical flight trajectory information The fall migration is the most reasonable time to expect a significant impact offshore and with enough contributors we can record where they are not looking but not finding them This is an important part of confirming Ross s idea of a corridor in the Gulf of Mexico during the fall migration This project can only work with widely distributed observers in the Gulf of Mexico
