    Library Committees Advisory Council Student Library Council Library Assessment Service Quality Assessment LibQual Quality Council Staff Awards About Staff Awards Billings Staff Honors Award Library Excellence Awards Nilsson Scholarship University Outstanding Staff and Supervisor Award 2011 Recipients of the Library Excellence Award Library Excellence Awards are given to professional librarians and classified staff in the University of Texas Libraries who have made extraordinary contributions Steve Bush Steve has demonstrated continuous dedication to our UT Libraries for the last 25 years He has created unique artistic pieces built and repaired important items and is a hard worker who dedicates all of energy to the task assigned In Facilities Steve was always a team player and was so patient with teaching and administering our student employees Steve is a model of customer service and has never turned down a request from anyone Katherine Strickland Katherine has become a real star in PCL having arrived last year from the Engineering Library In the Map Collection she provides map reference both in person and online she selects and orders cartographic materials catalogs circulates and shelves maps She plays a major role in the online map collection processing map images creating index maps and managing

    Library Excellence Awards are given to professional librarians and classified staff in the University of Texas Libraries who have made extraordinary contributions The recipients of the 2010 awards work in very different parts of our Libraries yet there are common themes to their nominations for the awards Chris Carter Chris nominations all mention his leadership work performance and customer service Here are just a few of the many words of praise for Chris work I can t overemphasize the value I place on Chris approachability and willingness to make things happen Chris is deserving of the Library Excellence Award meeting all the criteria at a level of excellence including consistently superior work performance fostering teamwork in all aspects of his work and providing exemplary customer service Many of the same qualities and functions where Chris fosters teamwork also allow him and his MCS team to provide exemplary customer service When asking Chris to make changes he doesn t focus on how this will change the work of his staff but on how these changes will impact public services He is an excellent communicator who has built credibility with the staff of the UT Libraries people know that when Chris speaks he has something important to contribute and they really listen to him Carolyn Cunningham Carolyn s colleagues describe her excellent customer service skills as well as her organizational abilities Carolyn is the direct supervisor for classified staff within RIS If you ve worked with Carolyn you know that she s great with customers both internal and external Carolyn is always on top of things keeping the space well organized and consistently updating staff about important issues changes that reference staff need to know in order to provide good service Perhaps most importantly during a time when we are constantly trying

    how many times I ve had to call Benn to retrieve lost data He always arrives with a smile on his face and never makes me feel stupid If you have a problem with your computer Benn will find out what is wrong and fix it And do so in a professional congenial manner if the problem persists he will doggedly pursue it until resolution Benn continues to learn and understand the latest technological advances And not in an academic teckno geek way but in the practical world of my computer is broke and I want it fixed And here s a nice segue from Benn s computer savvy to his human savvy Technical Services is in a constant flux of upgrading hardware software and peripherials What this means is there s a constant learning curve for staff some come along faster than others What I have learned in working with Benn all these years is that above all he is patient with his colleagues He wants to help and he never judges He brings a wonderful sense of humor to the workplace that helps lighten even the most frustrating situations Jeff Stuenkel Like most of us the majority of library staff are unaware of what the person down the hall does on a daily basis Although Jeff s accomplishments are only seen by a handful of people most of the Library will recognize the superior work done on the Spring Staff Recognition Event and the annual holiday party Jeff is the person responsible for such things as venue menu planning entertainment parking pricing and billing Given the economic situation of our University Jeff s challenge in the future will be to plan for these 2 annual events as well as numerous ad hoc events on a much reduced budget

    both the users she serves and the University of Texas Libraries In her role as Education Librarian she has gone above and beyond the call of duty in providing flexible skillful and patient support to the School of Education while accommodating the research and teaching needs of one of the largest graduate student populations at the University She shined in her role as the co chair for the OPAC Committee during the Millennium implementation One nominator described her energetic and diplomatic leadership writing Janelle always brings a user centered approach to solving service problems and is willing to back up her ideas with the hard work necessary to implement them Another nominator gave words to a sentiment that is evident in all of her nominations I have worked with Janelle since she began as a librarian and have continually been impressed with her dedication to user service thoughtful approach to her work energy and vision for new projects and ability to work with others to accomplish a common goal Kristin Walker Lending Services Supervisor Interlibrary Services Kristin s contribution is two fold On the one hand her efficient and meticulous management is seen by many But on the other hand only those familiar with the library especially Interlibrary Services can fully appreciate her effort Across the library spectrum the prestige of the OCLC symbol IXAÚ is enhanced by her dedication Fulfilling the daily requests of libraries corporations and individuals has earned the University of Texas Libraries a certain respect as the lender of first or last resort Behind the scenes Kristin and her staff meet those demands And it is here that her true talent lies In the dynamic environment of student workers she has trained an integrated team that maintains a high level of production Amid the vagaries of

    Renovation Working Group 2 300 Renovation Working Group and the Google Working Group One nominator stated The fact that Jennifer is asked to join so many groups stands as a testament from her peers to the value placed on her contributions and on her ability to work as part of a team In addition she is an excellent mentor to Kilgarlin Center students and a true leader Her positive attitude and dedication are admired by her staff and respected by her peers Another nominator stated Jennifer constantly exceeds performance expectations and consistently gives 110 effort to any task she is given Meghan Sitar Instruction and Outreach Librarian Library Instruction Services Through her innovative and creative ideas Meghan has contributed significantly to reaching out to the students staff and faculty of the University of Texas community She is a superior instructor and has a strong commitment to customer service She has been a model liaison to the Student Library Council She has been instrumental in forging relationships with the faculty in the Difficult Dialogues classes and the faculty coordinator for Freshman Seminars which brought the Libraries one step closer to the integration of Information Literacy into the new core curriculum Meghan s energy is admired by her colleagues One nominator described her team oriented and collaborative nature Meghan is always willing to help out a colleague whether covering for them at the last minute brainstorming a new idea or working on a project together Meghan shined this year in particular when she was the only professional staff member in her department for 6 weeks and kept everything running smoothly and efficiently Steve Stein Senior LAN Administrator Microcomputer Services Digital Library Services Through his duties that are vital to the functioning of the University of Texas Libraries he exemplifies commitment cooperation communication
