    nature of teaching and research and the needs of modern scholars are changing and so are the needs of the research libraries that support them In order to continue to provide the best services with limited resources including space UT Libraries must be very selective in areas of distinctive focus The University of Texas Libraries will no longer consider unsolicited gifts of general library materials This pertains to items of both an academic and ordinary nature such as widely held research publications popular books journals newspapers textbooks The Libraries will not consider personal libraries including those housed in faculty offices department libraries collections from other campus units large generalized collections unsolicited estate donations The Libraries do not accept walk in donations or unapproved drop offs The University of Texas Libraries are interested in considering and collecting materials that support and strengthen our Distinctive Collections UT Libraries Distinctive Collections are a defining feature of the University of Texas at Austin Comprised of unique rare and contextually significant collections of materials and providing abundant opportunities for scholarship they elevate the University s reputation as a destination for research attracting and inspiring communities of scholars worldwide Please contact the appropriate Subject Specialist to discuss the donation and to arrange for a review of the material The Libraries require advanced notice including an inventory list of the collection being offered and reserves the right to select only particular materials from the collection that fit within the Libraries collections current needs and scope If the material is widely held by other academic or public libraries it is unlikely that the UT Libraries will be interested Donation inquiries that are not made to the appropriate specialist or do not provide the required detailed inventory information will not be considered All donations must be approved by the

    Collections About the Collections Our Staff Subject Specialists Collection Management Gifts of Library Materials Scholarly Communication Policies By Subject By Subject Teams Scholarly Communication Scholarly communication can be defined as the system through which research and other scholarly writings are created evaluated for quality disseminated to the scholarly community and preserved for future use The system includes both formal means of communication such as publication in peer reviewed journals and informal channels such as electronic listservs Association of Research Libraries Today scholars publishers and librarians are developing a number of alternatives to the traditional subscriber restricted journal system Most of these alternatives focus around the open distribution of scholarly information via the Web and fall under the general term of open access Sharing the outputs of the scholarly research process increases the impact of research fuels the advancement of knowledge and increases the return on research investments SPARC The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition In response to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy OSTP directive issued in February 2013 the U S Department of Health and Human Services HHS earlier in 2015 released a comprehensive set of plans outlining the steps that its five largest agencies will take to create policies expanding public access to the results of their funded research The policies are expected to go into effect by the end of this year SPARC http www sparc arl org blog hhs releases comprehensive plans provide public access research outputs Open access may take the form of posting traditionally published articles in the author s final draft version in an online location where they would be available to anyone publishing in one of the thousands of open access journals or making scholarly material openly available in a variety of other ways Texas ScholarWorks is UT
